Alright folks: This is a personal one. I had a chat with my friend Daanish Syed about what it's been like to go bald. We discuss our history with baldness, bald solutions such as Rogaine, hair plugs, and toupees, and the possibility of scalp micropigmentation.

I am grateful for all of you Patrons for letting me put more interesting conversations into the world. I know this is not what I usually cover with my Patreon content. I hope that you find it interesting/amusing/insightful, but at the very least, I hope it doesn't prompt you to cancel your subscription :P

Dave, stop apologizing. This is the kind of niche oversharing we're here for. Possible future topic - I have never seen you with any kind of facial hair, have you ever experimented?

David Chen

Yeah, it's gone pretty badly most of the time, to the point where I try to studiously avoid it now. But, maybe a future topic! We'll see. Thanks for listening!

Daanish Syed

I love the term "niche oversharing"!

Interesting fact about me: I have never paid for a haircut in my life. Out of high school I had long hair and would just cut an inch off my ponytail every year, and then my hairline betrayed me in my late 20s and I went straight to shaving my head. Daanish is right, you have to have the right head for it. I do, and I’ve been doing it for 20 years now. The Skull Shaver didn’t exist when I started, so I use a Mach 3 Turbo. I actually have 2…the cartridges are still good for your head after they are too dull for your face, so it’s a cost saver and I rotate which handle is for my head. I also use Pacific Shaving Company shaving cream, which is more of a lubricant than a foam. I don’t know why I’m telling you all this. I just don’t get to talk about bald stuff very often. Serious question though. You cited a stat during the episode that 66% of men deal with male pattern baldness. That’s well over half…so why is it a problem? Who cares?

Daanish Syed

" I just don’t get to talk about bald stuff very often." Im actually glad you said that - thats the feeling I had as well, and I'm glad we can talk about it. And that 66% stat seemed pretty high to me as well, my guess is that it includes any amount of hair loss including a subtle receding hairline - I wonder what the stat is for full-on "baldness", but I guess where do you draw the line? What % of men are Wallace Shawn level?

Mike Shaw

I really enjoyed this candid talk its nice to hear men talking about baldness in a positive and constructive way. I too started really losing my hair in my late twenties and just started shaving it, although I’m not into the smooth look for my head, prefer a little hair. It is one of those things I never really had anyone to talk about it with even though my father is bald. I had mildly entertained some options like rogaine etc while younger. As i’ve lived with my baldness, I have grow to accept it as part of who i am. I can totally understand the desire for a different appearance and know that everyone is different in how they feel about baldness and their own baldness. I just really appreciate the discussion of what i know some people would consider a taboo subject.
