I have so many questions going into this.

Personally I agree w/ Joy (inviter pays for invitee), adding that I've usually made more than my partners so I pay for stuff more often overall (if they plan a surprise dinner, for example, I'm not going to make a big deal to pay for something after it happens). Asking to take the leftovers isn't necessarily about the leftovers themselves, but implies that further in the relationship this logic will be applied to something else. Also: dates are an example of your *best* behavior, so if there's a small misunderstanding this early, there will probably be more when they relax a bit. When you spend a reasonable amount of time sifting through...let's call them "not great" dating options, you start to value cutting off people earlier in the process. Theoretically this means you'll find your person sooner, but has the negative of potentially missing someone great via petty grievance. Thank you for this opportunity to discuss something silly

This is a George Castanza moment if there ever was one. The dude did not keep his eye on the prize. He wanted those leftovers so bad he was willing to create an extremely awkward situation and jeopardize the opportunity of a second date, just so he could get them.

I feel that on a date the inviter should pay unless they have discussed the check ahead of time. Also the person who pays is giving a gift of food. ONE DOES NOT LAY CLAIM TO WHAT WAS GIFTED. Would you bring a bottle of wine to a dinner party as a host gift then take any remaining home? I do agree her blocking him was an overreaction.

Love this! "She picked an item off the menu – therefore it's hers, even if she only had 2 bites." is what I kept saying in my head when listening.

I laughed so hard at Dave's "Do you have intentions for this food?"

How did Dave ever get a second date with this woman?

Agree that the inviter should pay. I think it’s pretty odd to assume that you would to take someone else’s partially eaten entree leftovers home no matter who pays. Family style or a shared dish, sure, but someone’s individual entree…that would be a flag for me and strike me as very odd!
