Hey folks,

After my last Patreon bonus audio about Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Licorice Pizza, I got a lot of wonderful feedback about how I should approach those films and my reaction to them. In this Patreon bonus audio, I follow-up on where I landed in regards to those films.

I really appreciated all the response I got about this topic and I hope you know I'm grateful for all your support and encouragement.

Love that you literally came to the conclusion of Anton Ego in Ratatouille, Dave. "But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so." Though don't forget about the next bit, which sort of feels like the main point to remember in particular with what to do instead of ripping into Ghostbusters Afterlife: "But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the *new*. "

David Chen

Totally! I think I mention that in the podcast!

Thanks for the updates - I'm sure every critic recons with the notion that it's easier to critique than to create. I don't really think of you as a traditional critic - someone who's job it is to see everything and give their take. More a commentator who can be more selective in what they see and talk about. Do you identify as a film critic?

David Chen

I think you’re right. Commentator is probably a more accurate term. but some people view me as a film critic - either way, the stuff I said applies in both scenarios

Not to detract from the thoughtful analysis in this episode, but I just wanted to say what a welcome treat it was to have you just sharing your thoughts on a couple of movies. No formal guest interview or gimmick, just hey I had some thoughts on a couple of movies and I thought I would share them. Would love if you do more of these quick hits even if the topics aren’t as important as this one was. Thanks.

David Chen

Thanks! I think I’ll try to do this more often.

Late to the post here but I really enjoyed this short chat. I also wanted to say there's a difference been dunking and saying you didn't like something and I hope you continue being honest(and I don't doubt you will) Theres a lot of online content that seems to stress positivity about whatever they're talking about, and that's one thing I really like about you and the filmcast in general. You don't shy away from saying you didn't like a thing or that it didn't work for you. That to me is totally different then just bashing a thing.
