Patrons,

I've just published my final podcast episode of the year: Five lessons from 2021, over on Culturally Relevant (Apple Podcasts, Spotify). This is not a happy or optimistic episode; it's pretty raw and emotional. But what I hope it offers you is some insight into the thought process of someone else out there who's reading about what's going on, processing it, and struggling with it.

Thanks for all of your support this year. It's meant so much to me and helped me to understand who and what I want to be as a creator online. I'm looking forward to a very interesting 2022 and I plan to be here to talk about it with y'all!

Please have a safe and happy new year. Thanks again.

Thank you David, great one. Thanks a lot for all the diaries and episodes this year. I really enjoyed them. Random thoughts your episodes are bringing to mind: Would you rather take 3% odds of loosing 100% of your life, or 100% odds of loosing 3% of your life? It seems a lot of the pandemic is boiling down to one's approach to that question... I would be really intrigued to find out what modern philosophy is being written during this pandemic. Maybe getting a philosopher on the show for interview would be interesting :-) Similarly, isn't embracing life also embracing death? Can we avoid death without avoiding life? Maybe there are moral and reasonable positions all along that spectrum.

Thank you for this, Dave. Eloquent as always, and ultimately hopeful (I felt), even though there's a lot to be angry/frustrated/depressed about these days. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy start to 2022!

I appreciate your empathy, your frustration, your despair. Thank you for sharing all of this and thank you for exposing me to articles I would never get around to reading on my own.

Hi David - I ‘discovered’ you via your Game of Thrones podcast with Joanna Robinson. Loved your chemistry. I share many of the same sentiments you expressed in your latest podcast. Trying to stay positive. Wishing you well in 2022.

Right there with you… let’s try to focus on what good we can and maybe that’ll help restore some of our evaporated energy. Thank you for sharing and helping those of us who feel the same way you do that we aren’t crazy for feeling so… it is ok to be deeply disappointed in common-sense humanity/compassion… especially when the shock comes from people close to us that makes it permeate our core - look at it as a good thing because it is an indication of having “awareness” of one’s self… *fist bump*

Hi David, thanks for sharing your thoughts. As for living with COVID-19 with a possibly more rigorous approach, I would like to share another Patreon supported podcast, “This Week in Virology ( TWiV )” , part of the microbe.tv. The podcast is hosted by a panel of virology and infectious disease specialist and researchers, with regular updates on current peer-reviewed and pre-reviewed research results, especially SARS-CoV-2 related topics Wish you all the best

Thank you for sharing your raw emotions with us, Dave. It does help to hear someone else acknowledge the problems going on in our country when family and friends seem to be ignoring them. Another coping mechanism for me is listening to music. I've been listening to Ben Harper's Welcome to the Cruel World a lot during the pandemic. The album is from '94, but it plays as though it was written today. In the titular track he sings, "It's been cruel from the beginning, it will be cruel when we're done". For me, it's somehow helpful to know that things have always been bad. They may seem worse now (and they may actually be worse in some ways), but we as a species have always dealt with the same problems. I'm not sure why I find that helpful - I guess it just puts me at ease knowing the problems we're facing today are not necessarily unique. If nothing else, his down-tempo blues style and the trembling of his slide guitar helps to calm me down. At the end of the day, we do what we can to make the world a better place and "try to enjoy your stay".
