The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that Will Smith will be banned for 10 years. He can't attend any Academy events but it's still possible for him to be nominated and even win awards.

I wanted to hear people's reactions to this news so I hopped on Twitter Spaces and just let a bunch of people on stage to share their thoughts. I'm making a recording of the Space available as an audio podcast for Patrons. Hope you enjoy the conversation!

My favorite reddit comment: "I’d have thought a bigger punishment would be compulsory attendance at the Oscars for 10 years" But seriously, any number of people that grind through the prison system and probation for assault crimes would probably gladly take take the punishment of not being able to attend a self congratulatory and masturbatory elite ceremony where rich people can afford to escape legal consequences.

TBC, people get banned for worse from baseball stadiums and casinos. I don't blame the Academy for taking this measure when this happened on their turf and during their ceremony. EDIT: oh wow that caller @ 10 min summed up my sentiment perfectly.

I have to agree with the guy who said Will Smith is probably happy with his one Oscar and doesn't need to go for another one. This could be a really exciting new chapter of Will Smith's career creatively - he's got his Oscar, he's done his blockbusters, he no longer has to maintain his put-together nice guy image. Now he can try something more personal and new.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see what kind of roles he takes from here.

10 years seems over the top but I think it was done to compensate for the lack of legal action to satisfy the public. The court of public opinion has more effect , in my opinion. Having Security guards neat the stage seems appropriate now.

And speaking of narcissists- that last guy! :)
