Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, David Chen discusses the launch of DecodingTV.com.

Not finished yet, but great convo so far. Love this Dave on Dave. Came here to say I love David Cho’s idea. You and Siddhant do a podcast consisting of multiple miniseries recapping and reviewing classic, fan favorite tv series that either one, or both of you, have not seen. Very much Blank Check-style where maybe the exact episode or show you are reviewing is it what will draw people in but the premise of the show and the co-hosts chemistry is what keeps people around. Then by the time they know it, they are watching along with y’all or listening to podcast episodes for shows they haven’t seen and don’t care about (something I do for Blank Check and The Filmcast often just bc I like hearing Griff, David and Ben, or you, Jeff and Devindra, hang out.) Doesn’t matter how many other Sopranos shows there are out there. There is not a Sopranos show that is hosted by you and Siddhant and what y’all would bring to your analysis. Call it Reruns. All exciting stuff, Dave. Nothing but opportunity. Enjoy it and good luck! PS. Call me greedy but I’d love a podcast like above or what Dave suggested ON TOP of y’all talking about Rings of Power. So excited for that series!

In defense of The Worst Idea Of All Time: I not only binged the majority of first season when they covered Grownups 2, I also listened to the second season when they covered Sex and the City 2. It really did become a transcendent piece of performance art somewhere around the 30th week of each movie. The meta joy of it reminded me a lot of my experience with Hollywood Handbook -- a FAR better (and more popular) show I've been listening to for almost a decade, but one which is also in-joke by design. I'm not sure if "cultivate a crowd who is in on the joke" is the world's most lucrative business model, but it does have its adoring fans!

Interesting! Thanks for sharing, Stephen.

No idea if you are interested in this or if there would be enough compelling material, but I would listen to a podcast about the process of building this. Trials, tribulations, successes, failures, missteps. Like the first season of Startup except building it on your own instead of VC funded.

Can’t wait to see the David Chen media empire evolve (Chenpire?). Unsolicited thoughts on umbrella branding: DecodingX feels more appropriate for individual things on a case by case basis (e.g., Decoding Westworld). That word evokes tech/sci-fi to me. I think of other successful podcast / content networks — they have more empty vessel names. Revision3. 5by5. Gimlet. Vox. Gives you waaaay more flexibility to brand individual shows, e.g. Culturally Relevant (great show name).

David Chen

Definitely thought about this but felt it was enough work to launch this new enterprise by re-using an existing podcast name, without trying to launch a new brand on top of that
