Greetings DChen Patrons,

As you may have heard, I got invited to give a talk at the Hawai'i International Film Festival at their "Online Creatives and Critics Immersive Program." It was such a pleasure to speak with some young creative folks and give them some advice about the things I've learned over the course of the decade. I was grateful to be invited and hope to one day return.

I was able to film myself giving the talk and the above is a heavily edited version of the conversation we had last week (i've removed some portions of the Q&A for audio/pacing reasons, plus a more personal section that has some business details). I'm sharing it for Patrons-only right now and I hope that it gives you some insight into how and why I do what I do.

As usual, thanks for being a Patron and supporting my work online! It really means a lot.

Any chance of you uploading just the audio of this to your Patreon podcast feed?

Per @Stranger2Reality's request: Let me know if you're interested in an audio-only version of the above. I don't like to do a duplicate post but if enough people are interested I'll make an exception.

Audio-only +1 (I find it easier to incorporate into my podcast listening vs. longer videos.)

That was great. I bet they were pumped that they made such a good call requesting you to come in. They were lucky to have you. Thanks for sharing it and thanks for paying it forward with your experience. It’s nice to see people being exposed to such a positive role model these days. There’s hope yet :)

I concur with the audio only request. I find audio better for offline consumption than Patreon's built-in video system.

Thanks for sharing!

Personal anecdote re: parasocial ice cream picture – no shame in saying, when driving I'll super often pause podcasts when one of the hosts is asked a question (e.g. one of you is about to give your impressions of a movie on the Filmcast) – and talk out loud as if I'm part of the convo, giving my own impressions. Sharing not because I think I'm good at articulating myself – but rather, it's just a fun & engaging to listen along as if it was a real convo.
