I just got back from seeing Avatar: The Way of Water and I wanted to share my spoiler-free reaction with y'all first. Enjoy, and thanks for being a supporter.

Sorry to hear that you didn’t like it as much but absolutely looking forward to hearing you guys talk about this movie on the Filmcast podcast. Are you planning on watching it without the variable frame rate before you record that episode?

David Chen

Sadly I don’t think I’ll have the chance to watch it in 24fps before we record

I'm going to wait for Avatar: The Ache of Air

Damn that’s a real bummer about the variable frame rate. I wanted to see it as Cameron intended but HFR really doesn’t work for me. I saw this come up yesterday and it seemed that Cameron understood the issues with it and found a way to mitigate.

David Chen I didn’t enjoy the video I LOVED the video. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Very excited for the filmcast review episode!

Did it finally answer the question... Is it Culturally Related?!

Jason Nugent

I haven't seen it obviously, but like you said "it looks like a PS5 game", I can totally see that. It may be a generational thing; but high-framerates are a "cinematic" effect I've seen for many years now. It's not special. So when directors want to use it in film, and tout it as something "revolutionary", it reveals to me their lack of respect, or just experience with a medium that many of us have thoroughly experienced it in.

Thanks Dave — this mini-review is very helpful!

was your screening advertised as variable frame rate? or HFR? what am I looking for on the movie showtime listing if I want to avoid the variable frame rate?

David Chen

I went to a Dolby 3D screening and I believe most if not all Dolbys are variable frame rate. Beyond that I don't know -- I don't think movies are advertising frame rates, sadly.
