Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, David Cho shares about some personal growth he's made recently, and David Chen takes stock of what he's accomplished and ponders the path ahead.

I know I mention this a lot, but since you also mentioned it in the convo, I want to reaffirm it. You definitely should combine Culturally Relevant and Decoding Everything. Name them both the same thing (I think decoding everything is great) Promote the podcast in the newsletter. Promote the newsletter in the podcast. Keep the brand consistent and coherent and you will grow it into something awesome. You already have done an amazing job, it just needs to be a bit more tied together and I really think you will flourish. Cho was right about Ryan. I didn’t even know about his podcast. But I knew about his newsletter and follow him on Twitter.

Not gonna lie, Dave on Dave is one of my favorite podcasts. It's an immediate listen when it pops up into my feed. Been following the Dave Chen odyssey for years, and this podcast makes all of those years of experience weirdly pay off. Dave 2 is both the devil and the angel on Dave 1's shoulders...encouraging him to actually take the risks worth taking and razzing him just enough to make his actual good advice to Dave 1 feel more meaningful. I've always loved Dave 1's hyper-realistic (to others usually characterized as pessimistic) perspective on risk and life and his experiences and his hopes, it mirrors a lot of my own life's perspective. I kinda wish I had a Dave 2 on my own shoulders encouraging and razzing me along the way. There hasn't been anything since the Startup podcast's first season in 2014 that has been this specifically riveting and veil-lifting to me. I'd never previously heard such raw and uncertainty in the feelings associated with starting a new seemingly limitless endeavor. I've been on the Chen-wagon since 2008, and getting to hear someone I've "known" and looked up to all these years sort through the strangeness of navigating creating a creative career in this current era, and dialoging throughout the process has been incredibly valuable.

I always love these Dave on Dave episodes, and this was a great one. Dave, I don’t know if this will make you feel any better, but you have 3 podcasts that show up in the Film/TV category on Overcast: The Filmcast is highest, then Decoding TV, and then A Cast of Kings. I don’t know how Overcast’s numbers compare to other podcast apps, but I always recommend it to people when they complain about another app, so hopefully those numbers are growing. :-)

Dave on Dave has legitimately been inspiring and challenges me to self-reflect on some things. Y’all are killing it.

Re:cross-promo, I came to the Cheniverse via Decoding Westworld > Decoding TV and legitimately did not discover that the Filmcast existed until pretty recently. Now it’s a must-listen for me! I think the David Cho points about cross-promo are pertinent.

Also Mark Zuckerberg has probably done hand Botox by now

this was the absolute best episode of DoD yet! I know we've talked about this in the past, but the formula for scale is very doable. Events, merch, print, coaching, consulting, speaking, writing a book... I'm sure you have plenty of people around to help, but if you ever need an extra pair of hands, and extra resources, I can pitch in. 🙏
