CW: This podcast episode contains discussion of self-harm.

Dave on Dave is an ongoing series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, the Daves discuss David Chen's current COVID approach, how best to approach blocking people online, and what makes for a successful podcast. Also, David Cho gets shocked by how long Dave on Dave has been going on.

Hey Dave! I really appreciate the discussion on Covid precautions. I personally suffer from Long Covid and have been out of work for ten months (along with many worse things going on symptomatically). I was very healthy previously. You’re right that it’s very isolating and lonely out in the world and it’s nice to have solidarity from one of my favorite podcasters/creators. I personally N95 mask everywhere indoors and outdoors now. Knowing and experiencing how Covid can ravage a body is an experience I can’t forget and will do everything in my power to avoid happening again. Thanks for all the great work on Dave on Dave, Filmcast, and Decoding TV! Huge fan of the Chenpire here. :)

David Chen

So sorry about this Sean. Thanks for sharing.

Joy o Napping

We take a few more Covid precautions than David’s quick summary. I have always wondered if ANYONE has interest in hearing the details but I am happy to share.

Joy o Napping

I am so sorry, Sean. Appreciate you sharing this as so many folks with long COVID do not feel comfortable doing so. It should not be your responsibility but it helps remind people that long COVID is very real.

Seems like the cohost Dave is looking for is sitting right there in the Filmcast. A Chen and Cannata weekly Decoding Everything podcast would be a must listen for me. You both have excellent friendly banter, but also frequently have much different perspectives on things, and both have the ability to eloquently make your points. Would be a great podcast.

Dave Glanz

I can see why it would be a lot of work finding a co-host as that person would need to be able to put in the time to watch a LOT of stuff, not to mention having a good rapport with Dave . Good luck, DC!

Mathew

Dave Cho as a guest on the Filmcast would be incredible!

Mathew

Dave Cho, can you recommend some good loneliness-filling podcasts? Dave Chen's are the only ones I listen to and I have a lot more hours to fill. Thanks!

Mathew

Also, I looked at my comment history and the Aug 29, 2021 is what convinced me to become a patron! I think your dynamic on this podcast has improved and gotten more interesting over the years. I'm glad that you two are doing these more regularly as well. Looking forward to seeing how these continue to evolve. Thanks for being here!

A few random thoughts to my parasocial relations: Finding a cohost who’s going to be a friend seems really challenging. Like Bachelorette or Love Is Blind challenging. I like the D on D eps because D Cho seems to often act like a negotiator talking down someone from the precipice. It’s really engaging and as someone with my own anxieties about work and life, it’s comforting to hear how D Chen works through stuff.

For what it’s worth these Dave on Dave’s have been one of my favorite things you do since Ep. 1!

Would love to hear your thoughts on the meteoric rise of Bobbi Althoff

“Thank a lot” killed me 💀

I love how the end of this Dave on Dave turned into a Dave on Dave

I am personally invested in the friendship between David Cho and David Chen. This is data.

Alec Rodriguez

The chemistry between the Daves and the focus of the show has seen strong improvement over time. In the beginning I remember feeling unsure about the show’s goal, sometimes it’d be a mixed bag and maybe it still is but now I know what to expect. I feel like David Cho frequently asks how the show could be better lol I’m happy with where the show is today for two main reason: 1. The folks gabbin’ angle where you guys chat about current topics I’m interested in like the status of the social media landscape in flux, and the podcast/online content creation industry. 2. The vulnerable angle where you guys talk like real friends getting to know Chen’s challenges both as a producer and the human behind the Decoding TV empire. Y’all bring a sense of realness and transparency that I can’t find with any of the other podcasts I have on rotation. I wouldn’t be mad if you guys decided to pivot the show into something different if you feel like it could be significantly better. I’m invested and am down to let the show evolve into whatever the Dave’s want to morph it into. Keep up the great work 💪🏼

Nizar B

I'm invested in the animosity between Dave and Dave 🤣

Sean Burke

I would be interested in hearing the details of what you both do in terms of Covid precautions

David

As a healthcare worker that witnessed countless preventable deaths and suffering throughout the pandemic, I sincerely appreciate your and Dave’s commitment when it comes to COVID-19.

David

I’m literally invested with this series - huge fan of Dave but it was Dave on Dave specifically that made me decide to become a Patron #data

Just came here to say I always love these episodes but this one in particular was fantastic from beginning to end. This series fulfills a function — it’s genuinely helpful to hear people talk through professional/creative decisions — but these conversations are consistently more than just that function. It’s two smart people talking about all kinds of important and timely subjects and it’s also a “friendly hang.” I get excited when a new Dave on Dave drops and think you both do an excellent job.

I am one to not comment often, but I thought I should after listening to this episode. I always really love these episodes and I am always looking forward to listening to them when they pop up on my feed. The conversation about the ins and outs of what help a creative endeavor succeed are always very insightful. I recently had to reduce the number of Patreons I was subscribed to and chose to continue to support this one because I love all of the content that you put out especially Dave on Dave. I am glad it is more consistent than it was in the past which gives me something to look forward to every few weeks.

Release the "David Cho is too high" cut!

Been a Filmcast fan for over a decade. Tried Blank Check a few times, but bounced off hard. No disrespect to them, but I find them incredibly difficult to listen to and just don’t care to spend time with them. It might be their more manic conversation style or different sense of humor. Or maybe it’s the soothing radio voices you all have cultivated. Was genuinely surprised to hear about their 5x success and it got me thinking. Both podcasts are consistent and have had lucky breaks, but one podcast is about movies, for people who like movies, and the other has a unique conceptual hook that makes it more “cool” to write about and recommend. Maybe that’s all it is… Food for thought 🤔

I am also vaccinating regularly, masking regularly and being cautious overall whether it's the flu, a cold or Covid. I've just developed new habits and I support you vehemently. I've had Covid once and suffered from complications and long Covid. I was very fortunate to have recovered fully but I'm in no hurry to get it again.
