NOW we're getting into it! I'm so excited to finally tell you about the ship, the Molly Hughes II. Let me tell you a story:

In the mid aughts, I was working as an intern in the IT department at the UK's National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, one of the world's foremost oceanography institutions.

It's a VERY CONFUSING BUILDING to navigate around, with it's system of pillars and corridors. I felt like a degree in vector calculus is needed to navigate!

The astute of you may recognise the ship docked at the front of the building!

IT'S THE SHIP FROM THE SEASON 5 ARTWORK!

Yes indeed! The RRS James Cook is the ship I have based the Molly Hughes II on. It made sense to me, as she's the ship I'm most familiar with, having worked on the shipboard computer systems during my internship.

Obviously, the James Cook is a BIT on the big side for a crew of 6, so there's a little creative licence there. Imagine a 50% size version. And sails.

I had a fantastic time working aboard, and though I had no idea at the time, it was GREAT RESEARCH for my future podcast!

I try to make everything as realistic as possible in Lost Terminal. Hard scifi, as this is called, I think is an opportunity for both of us (writer and listener) to learn more about the world. Certainly, I've never done as much climate and technology research as I have done in pre-production for each season! I hope you enjoy it too.

Things that actually exist in this episode are:

1. The CWAP system, combined distillation and solar panels physicsworld.com/a/solar-device-g…-no-waste-brine/
2. The International Fixed Calendar: I've written about it here www.0atman.com/articles/19/rational-time
3. The currently-secret engine that Amelie has discovered ALSO exists. I can't wait for you to find out about this engine, it's an astonishingly simple but incredible process that could change our real world. More on that soon, though I wonder if you can guess...
