[production-notes] Episode 8.2 (Patreon)

Morning gang! Thanks as ever for your support. Here's the news from the studio.

I'm now officially 2 recordings ahead of schedule, something I promised I would do after last season's wobbles. This will allow me to weather occasional sickness or life complications, with no change to the 9am Monday schedule! For season 8.0 I've always been ahead in writing, but now I'm ahead in recording and editing too. It feels good!

I've edited all episodes with Descript and WOW it speeds up the initial edit SO MUCH. The fact you can skim your recording (by virtue of it being text) to find mistakes and repetition is WILD!

My workflow now is:

• Record in Descript (on Windows 10)
• Edit in Descript
• Export WAVE
• Edit in REAPER (on Ubuntu Linux)

I'm hoping they will release Descript for Linux before my 2 hours of free transcription are up, but they may very well not! At that point I will benchmark how much faster Descript is by timing myself, and we will see if it worth the asking price. Again, thanks to you wonderful people, I have a budget for these things!

There's a bit more radio detail in this episode, and it will increase during this season, as I learn more. Last night I made my first radio contact from my home in London down to the south coast of England - it was so fun! The internet has perhaps made this less of an impressive feat, but if the internet went away tomorrow (as happened in Lost Terminal, or in natural disasters) it's nice to know there are things we could use to still chat and make friends.
