Hi everyone, I had a go at creating my first ever vlog for my visit to Chelsea Flower Show on Monday. My aim with adding Vlog content to my Youtube tutorials is to encourage people to get out and paint en plain air (out and about).

As this was my first go I was just reacting to my surroundings and didn't have much of a plan beyond enjoying the gardens and doing some painting.

I would love to get your thoughts on the kinds of things you would like to know about my painting adventures: more details on my kit, trying new bits of equipment, places to visit, challenges and unexpected outcomes to painting outside, interviews with people at the places I go to, things that you don't want to see...I want to make sure that you find these interesting and add value to the de Winton watercolour world!

Comment below with your thoughts and we can make sure this content is shaped by you, for you!

Painting the Gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024

Come with me to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024! Harriet is taking her paints out and about and you can come along too! This is our first vlog, I went to Chelsea Flower Show press day and took my paints along to capture the day. Painting in the gardens was so calming at such a busy and overwhelming event. There was so much to see I barely scratched the surface! I will be vlogging more en plein air painting so we’d love to know what you think of this and what you would love me to share more of! Ooh I would love to know what your essential palette colours would be

Jeff and I watched your vlog last night and we loved it! You are a natural in front of the camera Harriet … your sweet personality totally came through: opening Ant’s bag, putting on your makeup, sipping bad coffee, talking about the King’s arrival as you left - most entertaining and made us feel like we were right there with you. This content is a nice variation while we still got to see you paint. Talking about your kit in detail was great. Showing us how you hold everything, where you sit, those details are helpful. Any challenges you bump into will certainly be ones we will face - so share at will. Talking to your friends and fellow artists was and would be very fun going forward. Or maybe the cafe owner if you are out for a proper coffee and paint. Any hidden gem spots in your area, where you did your painting in 2020 as you created A Year of Watercolor would be fun to see. Not over planning or producing is key in my humble opinion - keep it light and true to your own voice. Can’t wait to see your next one! x Sharon

I agree with Sharon. You are a natural with the camera. I enjoyed seeing how you looked at the little area you painted. It’s nice to see how you decide what to pain when looking at so many different flowers growing so closely together.

Harriet, I certainly enjoyed this vlog so very much! Thank you for taking me, an American, along for a peek at such an iconic annual tradition there! And it is truly amazing! Your plein air experience there was so inspiring and of course your work was totally gorgeous! What better place to find so many lovely scenes to paint. I truly enjoyed getting a glimpse of the much heard about Chelsea Flower Show! It was great fun to ‘go with’ you! (Loved seeing the travel bit also!)

I agree with previous comments. It was a pleasure to watch. You are such a natural. Thank you for giving us a taste of Chelsea. You made me feel that one day, I could possibly paint on the go. Xxxx

Pam Dratnol

I so enjoyed watching this. Such an inspiration! You really have a nice way with people and your artistic talent is amazing! I sure hope you make one of these paintings into a tutorial!

Imogen Kullman

I thought it was lovely and I agree you are a natural. Thank you for taking us around with you. I have always wanted to visit Chelsea flower show, but never have gotten around to it.

Harriet - I LOVED watching your vblog. From the train (putting on your make-up on the train - you were very brave, especially putting on mascara) to the end eating your ice cream. It was a delight to watch it all!! Thank you!!

This was delightful. As everyone else has mentioned, you are a natural. It was good to see your little travel paint set. I have a lovely one that my son bought me. It is very clever with two paint pots that clip together to make the outside of the case. Then you can slide the paint pallette between them and it hangs over a chair arm. It even has a little folding paintbrush with two brushes. However, my actual paintings plein air have not been very successful. You have inspired me to have another go. I also wanted to mention the beautiful view from the train with the early morning low mist and the low sun shining through the clouds. That was a painting in itself. Thanks for sharing this trip to Chelsea - I look forward to your next adventure and whatever beautiful painting you produce.

I loved this vlog! I loved seeing your rain ride and countryside as you were passing through, as well your supplies, and you getting ready. (Coincidentally, I use the same foundation, and I love it.) The flower show is so beautiful and seeing you taking time to paint there is quite inspiring. I have gone to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Botanical Gardens here in the States, but I never would have thought to paint while there. I just take tons of pictures to use later. So I am determined to try painting next time I go. I would love to see more content like this, it was fantastic. Thank you. Where did you buy your little clip on water cups? They are fabulous.

Teresa Collard

This was fabulous. I love the Vlog. It would be such fun if you took us though a few plein air video tutorials, perhaps from your garden. You are a natural at the Vlog. I look forward to more in the future. Beautiful paintings and a charming tour, what a nice way to start my day. Well done!

Thank you Harriet. This brought back many happy memories of visiting Chelsea when I worked in London. I was a member of the RHS and in those days RHS members got in free after the first couple of days. I took full advantage of this and visited on my way to and from work. I shudder to think what it would cost me today but from your video it is clear that the atmosphere etc has not changed in all those years. Once again, many thanks, Nick.

Silvia Delena

Thank you Harriet. I took a lot of screenshots to try my hand at some of these beautiful settings. Your renditions were lovely, something to aspire to. I love your clip on water cups. I’ll be searching Etsy for them. ❤️ Well done and many thanks for sharing. - Silvia

This was great! I really enjoyed your vlog. And a new item for my bucket list: Chelsea Flower Show.

Carina 🌸

I’m agree with everyone else. The vlog was amazing and the gardens are really beautiful 😍 I enjoyed watching the journey that you made. You did it great 😊 Very inspiring!

Erin Berlin

I hope you do a couple vlogs about your Sept adventures!

Oh! And I think we should paint the sunrise scene in the early part of the vlog... the sun coming through the trees slowly burning off the fog <3

Cheryl Gibbs

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Please do more! And I really enjoyed the train ride. It took me back to the days of me taking the train from Baltimore to NYC for business--advertising. Not as fun and beautiful and magical as your destination. But still the train ride was always fun. And yours had beautiful vistas from the window. Thank you so much!

Dee R

I loved it. To see you in a different setting and painting outside. Made me look over my travel kit parts and think I will try some of it in my back yard.

Jana Bailey

Yes, such good inspiration for us. Thank you for taking us along!

Lori

So much fun traveling around with you Harriet!
