Hi everyone, I have been thinking about how much my style continues to evolve and change, even when I'm 'the teacher'. It's important to remind ourselves that the watercolour journey never reaches the finish line, and nor should it. With this in mind, it's easier to think about enjoying the process of painting. I also want to make sure that I am creating a wide range of content for painters of all abilities. So, here is a fun experiment, where do you place yourself on this scale? Have a go at all three paintings of the hydrangea and let me know in the comments.

I'll be able to move forward making sure we have content that everyone can relate to, get excited about and even push themselves towards. This Patreon community is my professional and personal priority, I get so much out of painting with you and want to make sure you're getting the same.

This is more of a chat, I dont specifically name colours in the video but I've listed them below for you as usual. My hair gets in the way once or twice, apologies!

Cold pressed watercolour paper

This is such a valuable lesson in accepting where you are. Each stage of the hydrangea is beautiful love this for those who are hard on themselves. 💕

Susan Hammitt

Between beginner and improver. I try everything you post, but so much of it is beyond me and I am disappointed in my results, but then I tell myself I am always learning things.

Hi Harriet - beautiful painting as always! I am at the early improver stage, beginning to figure out how to create dimension and shadows and depth, but not reliably - sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't - still learning to actually identify what it is that's needed, if that makes sense. I think I'm getting past that "flat" stage but still figuring it out. I love your channel and your art!

Between improver and 'expert'

I really enjoyed this video and challenge ! Please do more of these. Learning or reviewing the basics and foundations of watercolor is very helpful. Thank you.

Yes it's also about appreciating that simpler painting styles are just as wonderful and dont have to be developed necessarily

What a fun lesson! Looking forward to more challenges! I am between improver and expert. The improver level comes easily, but the expert level I can do with a bit of help watching you. I definitely still lack confidence with the more difficult things on my own.

Krithiga Gopalan

I between improver and expert. Beautiful hydrangeas there Harriet! Tried painting them and was a fun exercise to find where I was in my watercolour journey.

Emma

such a clever and useful exercise Harriet, thank you. I'm closing in on Improver.. I can understand the techniques needed to be an expert but I just cannot get there.

Andrea

I am between improver and expert. Drawing is an obstacle as well as patience to build layers in the expert level. Sometimes I just say good enough but other times I'll stick with a painting to build it up.

“Improver Plus” 🙃

You paint beautifully and are an excellent teacher! After attempting to paint all 3 hydrangeas, I would say Im in-between beginner and improver. Leaning towards improver with expert goals! I will keep on going! My brain understands the concepts of expert level, but I just cant seem to produce it!

Ivana

Just tried it, it was fun to do. I find it hard to say where I am but I think improver. It will take a little longer to get to fully get the expert level. But it’s fun to explore with your help ☺️

Cynthia

I'm a little beyond improver and I've reached a plateau. I'm taking lessons, painting with friends, and taking a few workshops. So much to learn. I try to paint a little every day, which I find helpful. This project was fun, thank you!

Selina

I really loved this tutorial. It’s the first one I tried and I land pretty solidly in the improver category so it’s nice to see where my skill level is and where I want to aim for.

Sue Robinson

Thank you Harriet. I would say Im an improver, wanting to move on, but not knowing what it takes to improve my painting. Rather like, I don't know what I don't know, kind of thing.

Sue Robinson

That was so helpful. Its the expert level techniques I really need to learn to be able to move to the next step. Thank you.

Christine Mayo Powers

Thank you for this Harriet! I only get to paint once a month or less so I love having a refresher/confidence booster when it’s time to grab my paints and get started. ☺️

Ana Morales

Improver for sure. Going into the advanced is still a bit off for me!

Pearl

Hi a bit of a latecomer I have been drawing and painting florals for a while now .. and so like Harriet’s style but have had so many problems getting on to site and upgrading due to a very very old email address finally I managed it today 😅after purchasing a new iphone

Dawn Elizabeth

I'm in the 'improver' stage! definitely a bit intimidated by the shadows on the pot in the case of this tutorial, but will give it a go! I'm afraid of ruining the painting : ( but also can see it adds so much depth.

Sandra Magnussen

Improver here for me! I am happy to have joined Patreon!

stacia

Thank you so much! I’m loving learning the technicalities.
