Hi everyone, the value scale is the light to dark scale of each colour depending on how dilute it is. It's a very useful tool to bring roundness and texture to a piece. We're going to paint a plate of biscuits first in grey scale which is going to show where the light and dark needs to be used. Then you can use that to help guide your full colour painting.

You will need:

Cold pressed watercolour paper (6x8 inch)

hb pencil

soft and hard eraser

Colours I used: Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Paynes Grey,

Brushes I used: Size 6,4,2,0,

Lovely challenge Harriet Thank you!

I loved how when you swiped the shadow around the plate on the first layer of the monochrome painting and the cookies and plate just popped. Thank you for this exercise.

This looks like a fun exercise for me to try next! I think variation in value has been missing in several of my paintings that felt ‘flat’ to me. Watching you paint in the darker layers made me realize that I’ve been hesitant to add darker colors/layers to my paintings, almost like when one presses too hard with a pencil and then can’t fully erase the marks they’ve made. I’m afraid I’ll mess up with the darker colors and won’t be able to remove them or fix the painting. Time to go have a think about ‘messing up’ versus opportunities to learn, experiment, and play. Thanks, Harriet!
