We're going back to Portugal in 2027! (Patreon)
Content
I have the most wonderful news, and honestly, it feels a bit like a dream to type it out: we're returning to Lagos, Algarve, Portugal.
I taught an Uptrek retreat at Quinta Bonita this Spring (with a few Patrons!) and as I shared content of the trip the messages kept coming, asking if we'd go back, I knew we simply had to. So as a surprise addition to the 2027 schedule, you can join me back in Portugal; March 28 to April 4, 2027 with Uptrek.
One week. Sixteen spaces. And all the golden light, cobbled streets, and bougainvillea you could ever paint. And Patrons are hearing about it first. We will be releasing the news to the public on Youtube tomorrow evening.
This retreat has a very special place in my heart. There is something about the Algarve that makes you slow down in the most beautiful way. The morning air smells of jasmine. The walls of Lagos are covered in hand-painted azulejo tiles. And the light is something every watercolour painter needs to experience at least once.
What to expectThe week is designed as a gentle rhythm of painting, exploring, and resting. I love to lead a week of watercolour that suits everyone - there is plenty of time to paint outside of the classes but you could just as easily have a swim, read a book or get another glass of wine! It's just painting, good food, and wonderful company.
Daily group classes with guided instruction from me
one-to-one sessions so I can work with you on your practice
The opportunity to try Plein air painting in the old town of Lagos, on the slightly bobbing boat(!), and among the wildflowers in the gardens of Quinta Bonita - our home for the week.
A botanical and floral focus throughout the whole week with the flexibility to teach a bit of simple building painting if you wish.
A short sailing excursion along the stunning coastline (one of my favourite days)
All meals included, cooked and shared together
A gorgeous traditional villa to come home to each evening with amazing staff!
All levels of painter are truly welcome here. Whether you are just beginning your watercolour journey or you have been painting for years and want to deepen your practice in an inspiring setting, this retreat is designed for you.
Painting OutdoorsOne of the things I love most about this retreat is the plein air element. There is truly nothing like setting up your palette in front of a flower bed or ancient building, taking it all in.Plein air painting can feel a little daunting at first, but I promise you, by the end of the week you will wonder why you ever stayed indoors. We work slowly, observantly, and without pressure. The goal is to see more deeply, not to produce a perfect painting. We will base ourselves in the stunning art room but there will be plenty of opportunity to venture outside.
The sailing morningMidweek, we head out onto the water on a traditional, brightly coloured portuguese sailing boat. A sailing trip along the coastline, past dramatic sea caves and golden cliffs. It is one of the most beloved parts of the retreat - it was a real bonding moment for the group. You come back to the studio with a sense of refreshment, inspired to keep painting.

A week that stays with youI have run retreats in many beautiful corners of the world, and Lagos holds something genuinely rare. It is a place that feels both alive and unhurried with an art room that took my breath away. The old town of Lagos was great fun whether you want to shop or paint!I think what makes these retreats so special is the combination of real, focused learning alongside the freedom to simply wander, observe, and be inspired. You will leave with a body of work you are proud of, a deeper understanding of your own painting instincts, and, more often than not, a group of friends you didn't have before. If you have been wondering whether a painting retreat is for you, I want to gently say: it probably is. You do not need to be at a certain level. You do not need to have painted before. You just need a quiet wish to make something beautiful, and a week to give to yourself. Come alone or with a friend, it's a great gift to give yourself.
