Happy Tuesday everybody and welcome along to our new Patrons.

Well done on your timed paintings last week, it certainly lived up to its title of being a challenge, but freeing up your painting style and breaking down the subject matter to its simplest strokes is such a useful tool to loosen up when painting just isn't going your way.

You will be glad to know that today's task is much more gentle. This is the first of our tree painting challenges and to begin with we are going to enjoy a fairly straightforward tutorial.

4 different tree illustrations that involve a slightly different painting technique: We are starting with a small-scale, simplified tree. Often in compositions, there are many trees in the distance that need to be painted in a way the defines them from just being green blobs but not so detailed that they are distracting.

This is a private youtube link which only you sweet pea patrons have access to.

You will need

A range of brushes

Colours of your choosing

A few sheets of watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to)

jar of water

kitchen roll to blot the brush (particularly important in this challenge)

Pencil

After/whilst watching the video...

1: Paint along with my four tree tutorials

2: Look outside - or on google images if you're in an area with little access to trees - and try to apply these techniques to more trees. Paint as many as you can to get comfortable with the techniques.

I can't wait to see how you get on. I found this so satisfying to do.

Comment below with your findings, and if you are sharing your work on Instagram, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco.

Enjoy the process and have as many goes as you like.

Have a wonderful week.

Watercolour Challenge 5

I suffer from perfectionism so when I couldn't perfect these trees on the first try (I know, ridiculous lol) I felt discouraged. I tried a couple more times and decided to change my tactic. I moved my painting to my sketchbook so I wouldn't feel as much pressure and also looked at a reference photo which combined with your teaching helped me so much!

Anne Ridley

I seem to be the only one doing these at the moment. Never mind. The trees were challenging but very useful. Will try to practice.

Julie Harron

This was very enjoyable once again.

Excellent, I loved painting this one too. I'm looking forward to seeing if you find any more trees to paint in this style through the week if there is time.

Shirley M

Thank you Harriet, a fun tree challenge!

Elise Cliche

This was the best challenge yet! I really enjoyed it :) Thanks Harriet!!

DeePee

This was an absolute joy to take part in. I am very much a watercolour newbie and I am delighted with my own results. Tree 3 was the struggle for me, but I will definitely practice a bit more. Thank you!

de Winton Paper co.

Yes, it's a crowd pleaser this one, it's nice to have something to show for your efforts!

de Winton Paper co.

Nice one! Yes, do keep practising and I'm sure tree number 3 will work out for you. I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying it and feeling encouraged!

Kerry Persing

Fun, fun, fun!!! Thoroughly enjoyed practicing all of these. I do have a couple others in my yard I will attempt to paint using these techniques. I’m making a goal for myself to complete and post outcomes next week! Thanks again Harriet for your easy to follow tutorials!!

de Winton Paper co.

Brilliant Kerry, yes the aim is to try and apply these techniques to more trees around you. So glad you enjoyed it, I love painting trees!

Kathy Graham

I absolutely loved this challenge!!

de Winton Paper co.

I'm so glad Kathy, the hope is these four trees cover all bases for fairly simple tree painting and will allow you to apply them to all tree types whilst painting in this style!

I have loved this challenge, but I feel not yet very comfortable because what you are doing is ten times better, I try again and again. I do not feel discouraged by what I do, I am happy, but you are doing better. I watched 3-4 times the video, how you are doing, to understand. Despite I like really much to work with you, I really appreciate your soft way to speak, very calm and sweet.

Caroline Wasterlain

I loved this!! I avoided it thinking I wouldn't but it was very relaxing and satisfying.

de Winton Paper co.

I'm so glad to hear it. If it's any consolation I faff around and do anything I can to avoid starting a painting but after a few minutes of getting stuck in to a painting I am so happy and relaxed!

Yes, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me in it. You can use either Stories or grid posts x

You're doing a wonderful job Karima, you can also add subtitles onto the video if you need any assistance.

Sarah Child

Been meaning to join since last October! So glad I finally signed up love the trees 🌲 🌳

Julie Diazoni

where can we post our practice trees and other things as we get to them? I think you mentioned sharing them so you can see how we are coming along.

de Winton Paper co.

Hi Julie, we share them on Instagram - either on stories or on your main feed. By using the hashtag #dwpcchallenge they will all be grouped together so we can all see them.

Dian

Having recently joined, I’m working my way through the challenges and enjoying them all. Loved this one especially. Finding improvements in my handling of this medium from your great tutorials Harriet, so thank you 😊.

Andrea Ford

Can you clarify something for me please? (At about 3m 50secs) As a left-handed painter would you generally have your light source coming from the right? Also I'm confused about the darker green being on the light source side. Why would the darker colour be nearest to the light source? Does it matter in a landscape unless there is maybe a building or a thick line of trees that would block light? I'm struggling with dark and light and shading.

Anne

I echo some of the other comments in that the way you teach the techniques Harriet makes me a better painter. I really enjoyed this one as well! And I didn’t think I would enjoy painting trees 😀

de Winton Paper co.

Hi Andrea, because all of these trees are individual studies they dont have a consistent light source direction.

de Winton Paper co.

Thank you so much Anne, I really appreciate that and am so glad you're finding it useful!

@emporteplume

I really loved this challenge, feel I can paint almost any tree now with those techniques. Thank you !
