Hi everyone, we're onto a new challenge: drawing and painting beautiful buildings in a simplistic, picture book style. We're starting with the Collosseum...yes, that's right, no biggie! But in all seriousness, I wanted to show you how we simplify such an iconic building to give you confidence to try this style of painting on other well known landmarks.

I've attached the reference photo I used.

As always, if you want some help with the drawing, just wait until the pencil drawing is complete then pause and screenshot the screen and there is your line drawing guide.

You will need:

A5 watercolour cold pressed paper

HB pencil

eraser

ruler/set square

Colours I used: shadows and earthy tones - Moonglow, Paynes Grey, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Buff Titanium, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange

Brushes I used size 2, 0 , 2/0, 4/0 pointed round

Watch the video through and then have a go at the Collosseum and just see how much you can simplify the detail. I can't wait to see your paintings on Discord and Instagram! Don't forget to tag me and use the hashtag #dwpcchallenge

This is brilliant Harriet. Rome is my 6-year-old's favourite city (ice cream and pizza play a bigger role than Collosseum though) I can't wait to try this out and give it to her!

Ah that's perfect! Yes I've got to say ice cream and pizza would feature highly for me too!

This is beautiful. My husband and I have been there many years ago.

I don’t see any attachment, is there a reference image?

Thank you!

I really love this - this is something I have been looking for from a teacher. Would love more on this - like painting a very ornate object (versus a building). I loved your Rome sketches.. thank you.

I actually started this but couldn't finish (much going on) and I'll be darned, turned out OK! Need to get the finishing touches on it. Thanks for the awesome challenge.

Absolutely fine Marilyn, you can always come back to this whenever you are in the right place.
