When Erwin asked Nile about Marie and the kids it was not a threat. Erwin and Nile are actually good friends. In the manga Erwin and Nile went through training together to become Scouts. During that training they both fell in love with the same girl who worked at a bar. At first they were both competing for her however Erwin decided to put that all aside to instead focus on proving his father right. That is proving his father's theories that ended with him getting disappeared by the government. Of note, when Hange and Levi are torturing Sannes there is set of scene flashes where Sannes describes how he kept the "King's peace" by killing people who threatened it. In that description you see a young couple running to a hot air balloon (those are Armin's parents), a teacher chained and being tortured (that's Erwin's dad) and a woman being killed by assassins (that's Historia's mom). Anyways, Erwin gave Nile his blessing in pursuing a relationship with Marie. So what Erwin was doing is reminding him of that moment and of their friendship. Also IMHO Erwin is probably thinking about what could of been had he pursued a relationship with Marie and if he weren't so focus on proving his father's theories right.

OHHHHH! That’s actually so sick? I had no idea 🤷 thank you. Makes things more clear. Erwin doesn’t seem like the guy to make threats like that, but just seemed a little bit like it was loaded. But this makes sense now
