This week we released Dark Dice: (Ep 10) The Tempest. It's one of the episodes with the highest feedback we've received, and for good reason! So today we're going to look into what made it "that good."The key focus of the episode is a 25 minute action sequence which was THE moment of the season. This massive scene was recorded over ~2 hours of nail biting gameplay, where every moment (and roll) could be someone's last! This audio was cut down into a clear and focused narrative (removing jokes, distractions, and the time between decision making / action), and this exciting action sequence was a LOT of work with years of planning!

The epic music by Steven Melin (the link is him composing it) had so many layers to work with that we remixed a 5 minute song (Wrath of Winter) over the entire 25 minutes! We will be uploading both version of the song here shortly :)

The environmental design is also a function of YEARS of work. These background elements use some stock audio, but the key parts were recorded by us: wind we recorded during gales, thunder and rain we recorded during multiple hurricanes, and boat & flag sounds we recorded in Iceland, Svalbard, and the US.

We talk a lot about how much work goes into each episode, but this showcases what we mean. It is our job to entertain YOU, and to tell a gripping story! Our players/cast put so much faith in us as well, and it's our responsibility to make them sound amazing.

Thank you for listening! We hope that you've enjoyed our Tempest as much as we did!

...And if you haven't listened to Dark Dice: Shores of the Silver Thrum: It's a self-contained story-season. If you don't think you'll enjoy hearing people "play a game" - you'll be pleased to know that enough game elements have been removed, so it feels like an improvised story (ala Mission to Zyxx or Hello From the Magic Tavern) as opposed to people playing a board game game. Love this post. This kind of peek behind the curtain gets me even more excited to talk about this show. The amount and quality of work this team puts in is honestly breathtaking.

Don't forget about your ability to craft amazing stories and making your players (/cast in general) feel extremely comfortable, even in scenarios like this one. Even back when we played this session it felt like this scene would be something extraordinary (knowing that mixing/editing/music would only make it better)! Hats off to y'all!

I have a couple of suggestions for future videos when you guys have the time: 1. A 30 minute episode takes hours to put together. Can you do a short video showcasing what you do when making an episode. For example, White Vault, do the voice actors meet on a specific day to record an episode together or do they record their lines and send them to you and you splice everything together? 2. A short video on how you went about recruiting voice talent. Di you know them beforehand, did they submit to you applicstions to do the show, etc Hanks for all your hard wok!

This episode was just epic and utterly engrossing, and tears were shed towards the end. Walking through town with headphones on I was somewhere completely different, navigating on autopilot. I've watched and listened to a lot of scary things over the years but only two have ever given me actual chills - The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe in it (I've never seen anything scarier in the cinema) and Dark Dice, that's been properly chilling in places and I am a massive fan. As a long time DnD player, I also love the DnD element and I'm looking forward to your kickstarter project as well.

Woman in Black - I had a very similar experience with it in theatres and just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for posting this <3

Yes! And thank you for the behind the scenes on how you compose the music. I saw both of the live sessions. I was flabbergasted that you hired a complete symphony team. No wonder the music is so engrossing and elisits feelings and emotions!!
