Every October people within the audio drama community come together to create a brand new story that is produced, edited, and released in under a month. This was our entry - a collaboration between us, Polarity Audio Works, and elements of the Alba Salix & NoSleep podcasts!

While texting her best friend, a young woman discovers that she might not be home alone.

Thanks for making us into bundles of quivering neurosis! It's a great show - I wanted to ask you two about what fiction has inspired you (and as it turns out go on a wee rant), I think you mentioned watching "The Terror" - a very interesting show also in the snow - I hate a lot of movie and television productions to be honest, I think it's because so much of it is getting bundled with some thinly veiled political message* (even or maybe even more when agreeing with it) which makes the story predictable, the themes patronizing. I did NOT expect the ending of The Terror or New Message and I order you to keep doing that. *an example would be The Arrival movie - Ted Chiang is a great writer but Hollywood had to pepper it with CURRENT_YEAR here and there and I had to walk out of the theatre in disgust because Chiang is about fate and determinism and they managed to turn this amazing philosophical thought experiment into #fakenews #everybodyworktogether #yolo. Rant almost over but I hope I don't find the eldritch horror outside the White Vault bunker was this classic misunderstanding and really if only Rosa and Dr. TheThing-Schumacher-Weib communicated more openly and honestly #itsnicetobenice there wouldn't be a horrifying collection of boxed human organs underneath their feet or that polar bears wouldn't be trying to eat his face but for the fact Graham Casner didn't use energy saving lightbulbs his whole life. This is a long way to say Please Just Do Storytelling, keep it pure - I think you're doing that and keep that up.

Kaitlin is out this weekend (her brother is graduating!!!) so I'll give a brief reply before she gets back :) In my head, I think what influences her the most are - playing good video games, watching good stories (we're currently binging Origin through Youtube - which is basically 'The Thing' in space), and traveling. We try to get out of the country once a year to somewhere affordable (i.e. $200 plane tickets to Iceland meant we were going to Iceland in the Winter, $190 tickets to Italy meant we got to experience the Amalfi coast during the heat wave). We also listen a lot of horror fiction via NoSleep & Creepy, and watch horror movies as often as they're released on Netflix or Amazon, and we discuss them for weeks after. Quite a few of the movies we see are bad (not in the fun way) but maybe had a cool premise, so we think about what made them not work, where they went wrong, what was cool about them, etc. Also, I was very inspired by The Terror from a music perspective, but we saw it too late to have any real impact on The White Vault in any regard beyond that. (I also didn't see the ending coming!) Any influence The Terror had on me might be present in Vast Horizon from a musical perspective, but probably something more in line with the video game Prey. I think New Message was originally inspired by an actual phone call, but don't hold me to it. Regarding not selling out or sneaking political messages into our works - Kaitlin is pretty firmly against all of that in what we create. We've had multiple offers for LARGE sums of money in exchange for ads on every episode of our show that we've turned down. This would have doubled our income, but we're firmly against pre/midroll ads on the white vault, and I hope that this unseen/unheard gesture shows our commitment. Though we may try to sneak a tasteful product placement in a future work for something genuinely utilitarian (i.e. a decent power bar or laptop brand that one character mentions the name of once or twice) we have no plans to tell people how to live their lives or how to interpret our stories. Thanks again for the kind message!

Kaitlin, I listened to this late at night on my way home from work and now I'm at home triple-checking the locks! I loved this story. Please do more bonus stories if at all possible!
