Yesterday was a cold day above the surface in Bavaria... So Kaitlin and I took a trip to Bad Reichenhall's Old Saline, to record the dark and dripping movements of an old salt mine for our podcasts! We got to test out our new microphone... Note, the year "1539" on the plaque in the background of the first photo!

We got some cool humming thrums in the halls...

And walked to a "bottom-action water wheel" from 1796 that's still in use!

It sounds as cool as it looks!

We made our way deeper into the grotto, which was a consistent 10 degrees Celsius.

And got some amazing cave howls, drips, and splashes as we walked by various underground streams.

All before returning to the surface...

Be sure to listen for these sounds in future episodes of The White Vault, Dark Dice, and our upcoming mystery podcast Don't Mind!

That’s awesome! I was looking at portable recording devices and microphones for recording environmental sounds a few years ago. I still haven’t bought one, because I don’t think I’d use it enough, but you’re still doing something that I’ve thought would be a great little adventure.

I was today years old when I learned that caves howl.

I come from a mining family, and mines are fascinating. They are places of prosperity and tragedy. They have a unique vibe. I hope you guys have fun!

Watch out for Fringers down there

I want to volunteer my rather sonorous speaking voice. How does one audition? Also, don’t look at any shadows while you are in there.
