The name "Kombi comes from the german *deep breath now* Kombinationsfahrzeug that means combined vehicle. The concept behind the Kombi came in the late 1940s, idea from a dutch importer called Ben Pon, who noted in his diary drawings of a previously unseen vehicle, based on a wagon made on the Beetle's (Fusca) chassis.
