Street Rats- Thank you so much for another fun reaction for Once Upon a Time, Tim!! I really enjoy this episode! In spite of the few fairly minor nitpicks I have with it. And I love that Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar have come into one of this season's major storylines! I've always loved the Disney movie... Aladdin too!! It's one of my all time favorite Disney movies! So, I was very happy to see them brought into Once Upon a Time! :) But first... I would like to say that I am once again disappointed that there are so few moments between Emma and Killian. We see Killian periodically throughout this episode, but we have to wait until the very end for Killian to even talk, let alone for him to really be a part of the story. But I love and understand his reasons for being upset and worried about Emma, which I will come back to shortly... And now... For an episode that introduces Aladdin as the Savior and brings him together with Jasmine finally, I really enjoy this episode a lot! And I absolutely love the actors playing their characters... Deniz Akdeniz and Karen David!! However, I didn't love this love, in spite of my love for Disney's, Aladdin, and here's why... Aladdin and Jasmine's story is quite a bit different than their love story in the Disney movie, Aladdin. Which is a really good thing, and I absolutely appreciate the differences in the stories. I even enjoy quite a bit of their story here in Once Upon a Time season six too! I love the differences overall! Because this show is known for its twists on the original stories, which I absolutely love for the most part. In Once Upon a Time, Aladdin is actually a Savior like Emma is now, and a reluctant hero. And Princess Jasmine comes to Aladdin seeking his help to rid Agrabah of Jafar, already with the knowledge that he is the Diamond in the Rough, and the Savior. Whereas in the Disney movie, Jafar tricks Aladdin into becoming the hero. I really love this twist, and I love how Jasmine inspires Aladdin to be the Savior he needed to be!! Even when tempted by Jafar with the sheers that would free him of his burden and allow him to live a long life, with Jasmine if she could accept his decision to do so. With all of this being said... This is where I am disappointed with Aladdin's story arc. In the end, it is revealed that Aladdin actually gives in to Jafar's temptation, and has given up his duty as a Savior in order to take the easy way out, before disappearing for many, many years in fear of Jasmine's disdain for him. I certainly understand why Aladdin does so. However, I love Aladdin as the hero, and I love the twist with him being another Savior, so it actually hurts me a little to know that he actually gave in, out of fear of death. I do understand why he does as he does too. Being the Savior is a difficult burden for anyone to bear. Which we've seen numerous times with Emma. Especially throughout all of season three. I was just hoping that Aladdin would come back still as a Savior in order to give Emma more hope. But again, with this being said... Even though Aladdin may no longer be a Savior, hopefully he and Jasmine will still be able to help Emma and the others to save her, and that they'll be able to save her people and all of Agrabah. Next... I'm really happy that Emma's secret she's been keeping from Killian and her family is finally out at last!! Although, I kind of hate how it is revealed, when the Evil Queen disguises herself as Archie and forces Emma to tell everyone. It's funny and a brilliant idea on the Evil Queen's part!! I love seeing how giddy and gleeful the Evil Queen is upon succeeding in her current plan. And again, it makes sense that this is what it would take for Emma to have to reveal the truth to them. Yet it's a bit of a let down, I think. I would have preferred for Emma to tell everyone the truth on her own. Emma's family's reactions are all spot on. And I absolutely understand Killian's disappointment and silence. I don't really think he's so much mad. I just believe he's hurt, and more so he's terribly afraid of losing the woman he loves. This much is very evident. And I love that these are his reactions, just as they would be for anyone who is in love with someone who's been lying to them about a burden such as she's going through. However, I am also sad that Killian chooses to keep the sheers rather than throwing them away, "thousands of leagues below the seas," as he tells Emma he did at her behest. Not disappointed by his actions, because I completely understand why he would be afraid to get rid of an artifact that could very well save Emma's life. I am just disappointed that we once again have another secret that will undoubtedly come back to bite Killian. Secrets are heavy throughout this show, as you've already seen as much. And there are more secrets to come aside from Killian holding onto these sheers. If you remember... David is also currently keeping a secret of his own, as he is still searching for answers about his father's death in spite of Snow believing he's given up his search after she believed him to have burned the card with information about his father's coin. Anyways... We'll see if Killian comes around in time to have more hope in Emma's decision to remain the Savior no matter her fate, for which I am incredibly happy about by the way. And in spite of my frustrations with the rise of this new secret, the final scene sets up for an exciting episode to come! :) Oh... And I absolutely love, love, love the reveal from Jafar to Aladdin, that these Sheers of Destiny once belonged to the Three Fates, known from Disney's... Hercules, and Greek Mythology, as they are seen severing people's souls from their bodies upon their deaths with sheers almost just like these within the Disney movie. However, instead of these sheers having the power to sever people's souls from their bodies upon their deaths, I absolutely love that these sheers now in Killian's hand, have the power to sever a person from their fate, or destiny. Absolutely marvelous!!! Next... I kind of hate that the Evil Queen kidnaps Archie and then that Zelena turns him back into Jiminy Cricket to keep him captive, and that Zelena is continuing to act as her wicked self. Don't get me wrong... These scenes between Zelena, the Evil Queen, and Archie with the baby are hilarious, and I still love the Wicked Witch. And while she is sort of acting as her wicked self, she's not really hurting anyone, or causing a whole lot of trouble for our heroes. She's only going along with the Evil Queen as far as she can, without being a villain. And I do appreciate this for Zelena!! Because you can see how much she longs to be accepted by her good sister and the rest of our heroes. I love this for her character! I also love the fun reference to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as the name of the spa in Storybrooke is called, The Three Bears! Goldilocks is also shown from behind, as we see Zelena and the Evil Queen being pampered and treated at the spa by a young woman with blonde curly hair. Love it!! As for Jafar and the whole Cave of Wonders storyline... Jafar is a really good villain!! Although. I have to admit I am a bit disappointed that he doesn't really get the chance to shine in this episode, since all he does is pretty much talk a bit to Aladdin and Jasmine, and performs a tiny bit of magic when he turns the men into rats in the beginning of this episode, and imprisons Jasmine in the hour glass. Which is a brilliant nod to the Disney movie. As is seeing the Sultan being enchanted by the magic in Jafar's staff, and him playing with the toys. I really love the actor chosen to play Jafar... Oded Fehr, best known for playing in The Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser. I've also seen him in a number of other movies and television shows too! He's a brilliant actor! As for the Cave of Wonders... I can't help but feel that the cave within this episode is a bit of a let down. First, the Cave is already risen from the sands. The golden scarab, as is shown within the Disney movie, is not used to raise the Cave of Wonders from the sands. And then, only a few words are needed in order for Aladdin to open the Cave, as he takes a few words from the original Ali Babba stories... Which I actually really do love the nod to. "Open Sesame!" And when they find the fake diamond, there is really no big destruction or chaos that erupts other than a pillar that Aladdin easily blasts apart to save himself and Jasmine with his magic. I admit that I was kind of hoping for a good magic carpet adventure. However, I really do love that the Cave of Wonders is brought into this episode, and that this storyline helps to prove to Aladdin that he is indeed the Savior, not to find a magic lamp like the movie. This is actually a good twist. Especially since the show's creators never had any intention of bringing Genie into this this Aladdin story arc at all. And they do not. Which in my opinion, is really a good thing. Because I honestly don't know how they would be able to pull him off well without destroying a character we all love... All thanks to the phenomenal Robin Williams. :) Oh... I miss him so much. Rest in peace, Robin Williams. :( Next... I love the moments between Emma and Henry, especially in the crypt when he apologizes for bringing her into the life and forcing her to become the Savior. I love that she reassures him that she wouldn't have changed her fate for anything because it gave her the family and the love she's always wanted. This is a really beautiful and tender moment between mother and son, and I love that Aladdin reveals himself to them upon him overhearing hir beautiful conversation. And I really love the final scene between Killian and Emma, because they are so loving and because Killian is his usual self with her until she leaves, then he is seen pulling the sheers from his jacket's inner pocket. Overall... I do really enjoy this episode very much! I would have made some changes if I were writing it myself, but I appreciate each of the storylines nonetheless. And I really love the actors chosen to play Jasmine, Aladdin, and Jafar. Especially Jasmine, who is played by Karen David, an actress I have seen and in many shows. And regarding some fans' complaints with some of the actors' and actresses' accents throughout this show, including Aladdin and Belle... I can certainly understand why you might feel this way if you do. I recognize that many of the actors and actresses don't match the proper accents that their characters should have. Many fans especially very much dislike Aladdin's accent, given that Deniz Akdeniz, who plays Aladdin, is from Australia, and he's trying to pull off a British, or maybe even a Middle Eastern accent, but fails to do so. Personally, I don't allow the wonky accents from actors like Deniz Akdeniz or Emilie de Ravin (Belle), to bother me at all. I really enjoy them as actors and I enjoy their overall characters a lot, in spite of them using wonky accents that may not fit their characters. I enjoy Aladdin a lot throughout this season! Jasmine and Jafar too! :) So, thank you once again, Timothee! Sincerely, Heidi
