Do you think 'lavender' is a cute nod to 'Sage' the programme that started the dream of algorithmic death from above? Apologies if you talk about that here I'm a couple EPs behind

My view during this series is that the synthesis of the state and capital has created the tentacles of the headless octopus. And these tentacles are networks of people, that sometimes work with or against one another in pursuit of their market interest that they’ve interpreted from “the data.” To reference one of the older series... God might have died, but there are new Gods now. We can’t see them, we can’t understand the spirit (market) that guides them. We only know some of their names, like Dow chemical, Amazon, CIA etc… and they control everything

feels a lil bit funny in this moment that entführung is kidnapping

Have you seen Zone of Interest yet? It could be a companion film to this episode.

tying this into metaphor vs abstraction: meaning inheres in semantics, function inheres in syntax. computer systems process only syntax, they are purely functional and meaning as such is irrelevant to computer processing. while the meaning of a metaphor comes from its semantic content, ie the real object or feeling or process it refers to, the meaning of an abstraction is in its function. the abstraction of "justice" can function just as well for slaughter as for recompense, because as it is not a metaphor it has no real referent. as the discourse and dictates of power increasingly take the form of abstraction they are also increasingly suited to computer automation as well as political occlusion of meaning. it is exactly as michael says, there is an interlocking automated system of function without meaning and to even suggest that its function has meaningful consequences is to violate the assumed sanctity of abstraction.

This episode has me feverishly writing down notes like the first time I heard the JFK series…. Gotta make sure the brain-rewiring sticks

I've also been wondering about that "30 thousand dead according to the hamas-run health ministry" figure that just seems to have stopped moving upwards for what... two months? Would you mind sharing the source for the 100k-200k estimates? I would have to guess that there is no longer any agency within Gaza that has the capacity to keep track of deaths. If the goal was to destroy hamas, then of course that "hamas-run ministry of health" also has to go -- and conveniently with it any accounting of the death toll. I know there are other thresholds to consider for when a quantity of murder becomes qualitatively a 'genocide,' but to my mind if one side has, in their wrath, destroyed through brute force the ability of the other to count their dead, don't we have to assume a genocide is underway at that point?

Came awfully close to quoting Lou Reed there 😅

I can't stop thinking about a paragraph in the 972 article on Lavender, where they mention that IDF intelligence determined that they got a greater kill percentage on their "high value targets" when they were in their homes, instead of on the street or moving. So they created a subprogram of Lavender to specifically track targets to their family homes (read: high-rise full of other families too) and send a strike the moment they walk in. They named it, officially, *Daddy's Home*. I have an 18-month old daughter, who I don't often get to see at dinnertime except on the rare Wednesday when we have fuck-all on the books for resos and I ask to be cut. I can't stop thinking about the sound that greets me when she sees me walk through the door unexpectedly, and somewhere still out of view but just over my shoulder is a streaking Hellfire missile. I cannot stop thinking about it.

Michael do you ever feel like chicken little if he was right the whole time?

This episode brought to mind a line from Aimé Césaire: Eia for those who have never invented anything For those who never explored anything For those who never conquered anything But yield, captivated, to the essence of things Ignorant of surfaces but captivated by the motion of all things Indifferent to conquering, but playing the game of the world.

Thank you for doing this show Michael. I feel terrible listening a lot of the time, but more accurately I feel catharsis. While I was listening to the show and running errands today I stopped at my local corner store where the Palestinian owner was swearing and punching the counter over the news of Israel striking Iran. I had very little to say that was useful but I was able to at least listen to his pain, and your show has helped me achieve something like a more genuine compassion. I say compassion because I know you’re an etymology-head and compassion means ‘with’ and ‘suffer’, or to ‘suffer with’. With how useless and small this damned genocide has left me, at least I can authentically share a small piece of the suffering others are experiencing.

The bit about why Hitler lost in the end reminds me of one of my absolute favorite bits from one of Matt's old Cushvlogs where he says something along the lines of "WWII is like if Germany lost to Air Bud in the Finals and spent the next year finding and training the most perfect, beautiful, jockish Golden Retriever to play basketball, only to get back next year and get told by the commissioner 'What? Dogs can't play basketball.'"

Fucking fantastic ep. Bless you sir.

“I can’t feel all of what I feel, because every time I start to try it completely overwhelms every fucking sense I’ve got. I completely blow all the fuse boxes in my nervous system and still come nowhere close to feeling how I should feel about this” - thank you for perfectly explaining how I’ve felt since finding out about ‘where’s daddy?’, the most disturbing and sick and terrifying thing I’ve ever heard of. So far.

Because you’re a better reader and more insightful critic than me, I’m going to strenuously suggest you read William Vollmann’s “The Dying Grass” about the US’s genocidal campaign against the Nez Perce. If we were to present a genealogy of the kind of libidinal investment in industrial automation of war hypostasized in Lavender, Vollmann shows its origins in America’s murderous manifest destiny. Two epigraphs from the novel: “‘The machinery for the production of metallic ammunition, both in the Government and private factories, has been brought to a high degree of perfection, it’s very beautiful and almost automatic character and performance, uniform and accurate production, making it the admiration of the beholder.’ Ordinance Memoranda [sic] No. 14 1873. ‘As I looked upon the battalion for the first time when in the line of battle in two ranks, I thought I had never seen anything handsomer. There did not appear to be motion throughout the line, and later, the movement in the column presented an appearance even more beautiful. Though the motions were angular and stiff enough, the effect upon the beholder was that of a complete machine which could make no failure as long as it was in order.’ Brigadier General Oliver Otis Howard, USA, 1907.” Say it with me “very beautiful and almost automatic, very beautiful and almost automatic, very beautiful and almost automatic…”

Max Azzarello 💔 can’t help thinking about the paralells he drew between the branding of apathy and nihilism as a means of separation and distraction (synthesis and control) Lavender being a perfect examble of what he was talking about. So much of the acceptable philosophy and compatible leftist thought (albert camus, george orwell) logically leads to a sense of hyper individualism and isolation / despair which is not sustainable. “I hope you realize that the only path forward is to help and protect each other” — Max Azzarello

Also learning that Israel is using an AI system called "Where's Daddy" to carry out bombings is like hearing the voice of Satan.

Hello Mike, could you give me your thoughts on the idea that when you say it's not correct of people to put gazans into the category of Hamas because they live under that government with the ideas of Solzhenitsyn who puts responsibility on every individual for their government.
