you play that tarantella, all the hounds will start to roar The boys all go to hell and then the Cubans hit the floor They drive along the pipeline, they tango 'til they're sore They take apart their nightmares and they leave them by the door Let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair Deal out Jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs I'll tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past And send me off to bed for evermore

Damn, I always thought Jackson was 'Old Hickory' cuz his dik was the length and width of a hickory switch.

Joey Fazzoli

Damn looks like I’m listening to hell of presidents again

NYCM&AHole

Gonna go start my morning with All Shall Perish after listening to this

I’m still excited the ep about Walter Ratheneau seance from gravity’s rainbow because it stuck with me when I read it. But another scene I think about a lot is when Tchitcherine records the folk song and ritual of the steppe tribes. it relates a lot to themes around language, culture, empire

CE

The opening is my favorite of them all!!

Fun fact: one of my ancestors on my mom’s side (from Houston, Mississippi) served in the war of 1812 and the battle of New Orleans with Andrew Jackson. From what I’ve discovered, afterwards he experienced an onslaught of bad luck…like Lot level bad luck…losing wife and children to disease, going broke, house burning down… It’s funny how my family members refer to him as an American hero…I’m like…he literally took part in a genocide. But remember I’m from Mississippi…in 2001 back in 7th grade they were teaching us about the “northern war of aggression” and how “slaves were like family” in history class. Taught by the creepy male teacher who also coached girls softball. Wild shit.

I won't say how many attempts it took for me to realize "Walther Bengamine" is Walter Benjamin. Damn Deutsche, you crazy for this one.

John Waaben

Was there an issue with Amjad’s gofundme? I donated earlier this week. Looking forward to hearing more about Melville :D

The war is the greatest evil aphorism is Chris Hedges' calling card. He has a book of the same name that everyone should read

The place I'm from (Eastern Shore of MD specifically, but the Upper South generally followed this path) offers an object lesson in what actually happened when the process described at 25 mins occurred. When the ok-at-best mid-Atlantic soil started to deplete and tobacco became more common and cheap, slave owners in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, etc. found themselves with more human chattel than they had a profitable use for. Lucky them, this felicitously coincided with the end of the legal Atlantic slave trade, and huge demand in the cotton-growing deep South. They went from consumers of enslaved labor to *exporters*. And an export good has to be *produced* which when that good is human beings means something too vile to continue describing, which is quite well documented and lasted for almost 60 years.

Riding the T, singing Braintree, Goddamn to the tune of Mississippi, Goddamn

A note on pronunciation since it's obvious that getting it right matters to you- in Central VA, where I grew up (and attended Piedmont Virginia Community College) it's pronounced peed-mont. Like every region we have a variety of strange and unpredictable pronunciations of place names (Rio Road is Rye-o Road, for instance) but Pee-ayd-mont is not one I've ever heard there.

Great episode but also: Walter Rathenau.

as a mass local, i'm grateful you touched on an important topic to me: how fuckass the name "Braintree" is

doesnt matter much, but my philosophy degree is rotting at my parents house so i thoughts id give my two cents and say the rational/empiricism debate wasnt really about knowledge being exclusively either empirical or rational and more about whether knowledge was originally acquired through observation and then reason was applied (tabula rasa) or whether there were innate ideas and stuff like synthetic a priori judgements that we then applied to our observations. This did not mean we did not use observations to make certain rational conclusions, but we needed something like a causal logic in our head to assist in making sense of the observations. I dont know, maybe you said all this and since it wasnt articulated in a way put it i missed it. Great jo, always enjoy

Unrelated, but does anyone recall the [maybe] Joshua Cohen podcast MSJ mentioned a couple of times, regarding ARPANET/ internet?

Comparisons to Hell of Presidents are apt. There are many ways to tell a story, Mr. Judge, and you’re a fascinating storyteller.
