happy Valentine's Day to all the real D/C heads, who will be staying in tonight and listening to MSJ's dulcet tones detailing the latest on the Fourth Reich 💐💋💌

ACABadabra

Please do a whole show about Hasan al-Sabbah.

Check out Wasserman’s Templars and Assassins. Author cofounded the Neo confederate OTO faction but the book is solid

I wanna draw attention to an "AI" organic chemistry development I think is pertinent to the show in general. I knew that this had been one of the goals for many years but has only recently been achieved. This breakthrough was the recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry. AI researchers have "solved" protein folding. That is, given a chain of amino acids, the algorithm can predict with high accuracy how that chain will fold in 3D space. The way proteins fold in 3D space is absolutely essential to their function. Before this, the only way to determine protein structure in 3D was X-ray chrystallography which is a massive pain in the ass, takes a long time, and often does not work at all. Here's the really scary part. They can use the same algorithm to make entirely new proteins. They can give the computer a goal (make a protein which will do X) and the computer will come up with one. They can then use decades old technology of encoding the amino acid chain as DNA and insert this DNA into a bacteria which will produce it. This is a revolution on par with the synthetic organic chemistry revolution we talk about with IG Farben. Keep in mind, the people who made and control this technology are of the same ilk and worldview of the people involved at IG Farben. They're the same people who think it's a good idea to spray entire continents with chemical pesticides every year. Now they can make novel proteins to perform any function they wish. Even if their intentions are entirely good, their understanding of the world is so stunted, immature, and narrow lense it is totally possible if not likely they will start messing around with releasing synthetic protein-carrying bacteria into the environment. The unintended consequences could be on par with total nuclear annihilation. Nevermind if it were to be weaponized on purpose. An obvious case would be making a protein which efficiently digests a common plastic, let's day polyethylene. Sounds great let's clean up the oceans with it! Don't worry, the scientists are pretty sure this thing will only digest polyethylene... This tech absolutely has not just civilization destroying capacity but biosphere destroying capacity. And again, the people who control it and have access to it are not smart. For all intents and purposes, they are Nazis. We have a class of totally uninitiated technomancers on a power trip. The Tower of Babel. The Sorcerer's Apprentice. That is where we are at with "AI". It may not he everything they think it is. But it is a power this culture is nowhere near ready for, least of all the people who make and control it.

Dude one of the stockbrokers who works in the boiler room next to where I work is in the rosecrutians. Totally creeped me out.

"He might think of it as a worm, a giant worm, not a living worm but a carcass of a worm, a monstrous cadaver, its body consisting of numerous segments, its skin pimpled with spears and wheels and other technological implements. He knows from his own experience that the entire carcass is brought to artificial life by the motions of the human beings trapped inside, the zeks who operate the springs and wheels, just as he knows that the cadaverous head is operated by a mere zek, the head zek." - Fredy Perlman on Leviathan

https://youtu.be/NB9gyyVrbxk?si=AhY86QNMBQkqdKp- Link to “The Laughing Man” doc MSJ talks about towards the end of the episode. Turn on “CC” for subtitles. There’s a companion documentary that follows the euro/NATO mercenaries in the Congo (I believe?) called “Kongo 64” but I can’t find it at the moment.

Any thoughts about trump shutting down USAID?

You reminded me of a Missouri story from ‘99. A bunch of the B2 fleet out of Knob Noster/Whiteman AFB would fly directly over my middle school every day at the exact same time in spring ‘99. The first B2 would show up about five minutes into recess and the last would trail off around the time our 30 minutes were up. I was as fascinated by their precision as I was excited to see military super secret squirrel shit, but most folks were bored of them by the end of the first week and went back to doing cool shit with their $100 yuppie yo-yos. My father was horrified when I told him about how cool the B2s looked, how low they flew, and how loud they were. He pulled out a picture book about the underground “cities” of “North” Vietnam. All their homes, schools, and hospitals dug deep, deeper, and deeper still trying to escape the B-52s. Generation after generation of children terrified of the warm sun and clear blue skies that herald the bombers, and now, of course, the drones. He joined his brother in Springfield Penitentiary in ‘68 after the draft board took issue with his conscience. I don’t know what this turned into. None of that shit kicked in for me until later. I just spent the next few weeks laying in a field cursing each plane that refused to release me from the haloperidol in an apocalyptic conflagration worthy of the god that decided to poke a hole in the firmament just for me.

I vote for a show about Hassan I Sabbah. On an unrelated note. Have you read any of Heather Marsh's work? I would be very interested in your opinion of the material covered in her book, "The Creation of Me, Them and Us."

Either behind the bastards or lions led by donkeys has a good multi episode historic account of the Namibian Genocide.

With regard to nationalism and national liberation and the different meaning of it in different contexts, I saw a great Deleuze/Guattari quote in a Fredric Jameson book, from A Thousand Plateaus originally: “The tribe-race only exists at the level of an oppressed race, and of the oppression it undergoes; there are only inferior races, minority races, there is no dominant race, a race is not defined by its purity but rather by the impurity conferred on it by a system of domination.”

Wildly Absurd

Not sure if you were talking about the movie simply named “Matewan” because that does not star Raul Julia, but either way I think it deserves a rewatch outside of the Catholic School context. Possibly pseudo-leftist but great performances by Chris Cooper and James Earl Jones

Thanks, MSJ. Learn something new every time.

Just wanted to mention because this episode brought up this memory, when I went to Australian Jesuit school in the 2000s and they showed that Oscar Romero movie, part of the lesson was to tell us that liberation theology was a deviation from real Catholicism to be disowned and it was boiled down to "Liberation Theology said that everything including kidnapping was permitted by Jesus"

Im perplexed girl. I musta been practicing some enochian magic rituals, cuz I just summoned an angel. Sometimes I really hate myself😎

Angus Cameron

Great episode as always MSJ looking forward to the next one! On the topic of a new process beyond imperialism highly recommend Hardt and Negri’s ‘Empire’. It was written in the mid 90s and theorises a shift from imperialism to a new construct developed by the capitalist worlds ruling powers

brandon

Just wanna throw a vote in here for a Hassan i Sabbah ep

Trout Mask Original

Hasan i Sabbah episode? DO IT!! Bonus points if you work in a reference to Nicolas Roeg's 'Performance' (and drag your brother on for that)!

Alex Gross

something i haven’t been able to stop thinking about since finishing “our history is the future” is that the lakota term for the united states is “the nation of the long knives”

No

I’d be heavily interested in the Bosnian/serbian wars. It comes from an unfortunate interest in Peter handkes writing but his seemingly bizzaro pro serbian nationalism that I haven’t looked into

Brian Levy

Hey Mike. I’ve got a question for you. What do you think about the allied strategic bombing in Ww2? I visited Hamburg last summer and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them whenever people are talking about killing Nazis. Like on one hand, fuck all Nazis, they gotta go. But on the other hand… idk, plenty of people weren’t actual party members and just had the bad karmic luck of being incarnated in Germany at the right time for WW2. Feel like you might have a decent take on this.

Dwayne Reid

Aren’t you forgetting the easiest hack for entry to heaven - THE BROWN SCAPULAR? Can you share any catechismal insights into that one?

Sorry to post this here, but recently returned after a hiatus. Can anyone tell me where I can find the novels by MSJ? Thank you

What are the Burroughs excerpts at the beginning of this episode from? I want to reread them more closely.
