Professional seer Matt of Ghost Stories for the End of the World expertly navigated my million-dollar security system to talk PROMIS, complexity as a substance, and how we're all Mr. Angleton now.

EDIT: I just realized that I completely fuckin' forgot to bring up Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and The Phenomenon of Man and Point Omega, so the title doesn't make any sense. O that it were not so.

ROFL on the RFK jr Impression

Dan Z

You turned RFK Jr into a Brad Neely character

Enk

Oh fuckin yes

Tammy Jones

Yay! Very stoked, thank you and Matt for your work 💀❤️👻

Hell yeah, just got home from work and the first real night of allergy season has me wanting to place a snub-nosed Taurus Judge loaded with #4 birdshot up to the side of my nose. A benadryl, ≈3 Modelo Especiales, and this ep should get me right.

Unless you've masturbated in the desert with a nazi, you can't understand Dianetics.

Sirs, what if a certain Mister Adomian were to contribute his talents of mimicry to a comically not-so-far-fetched scenario co-created by Mister Chapo? And... why stop there?

My favorite little treats from Mr. Judge are his anecdotes from Hell. Misery. Missouri. All the same. After nearly 20 years in the trucking industry I thought the worst thing about summer was breaking open a trailer from the Great Lakes or the fucking Southeast and being swarmed by a million disease-laden mosquitoes. You work outside doing heavy manual labor for eight to 12 hours a day (typically the night in my case) and your body pretty much becomes inured to the weather after a few years, or so I thought. The cold wasn’t shit if you’d invested in good winters and learned about layers from the greybeards. Come summer it’s just about water and rockin’ nothin’ but a t-shirt under your bibs. Ice cold bandana around your neck works real well, too, if you’re not fucking stupid about it. I tried to salt a smaller barn last year and by the start of July we had cases of heat exhaustion at least once a week. It wasn’t until the foreman had a kid put an old timer clearly having a fucking heat stroke in the chemical shower (which set the seizures on him) that the company authorized five minute breaks an hour. Wow. The Company were already pissed they’d spent pennies on industrial fans we didn’t want ‘cos they just blow Hell’s humid furnace in your face, so they blamed it all on the kid and dropped him. The foreman didn’t say what he said, of course. I weren’t dying for a shop that’d never get anything better than a white paper contract worth only slightly more than company quarter ply toilet paper. Quit when I found out that night. As an aside, fuck Local 41 and all the wop Eye-talian dogs that spent the better part of 50 years ratfucking the rank and file while stuffing their pockets. This includes all the honorary dago cunts like Stubbs, too. At least UPS put ‘em all to the sword. I swear to God I won’t post about Missouri again. I just spit the bit when Mr. Judge reminds me I live in Misery - a place as beautiful as it is forsaken by God.

Nice one can’t wait for this !

Capital Knockers

I think Tlon is the borges story that the tech bros want to emulate: "Thiel later provided seed capital to the tune of $1.1 million for a company Curtis Yarvin founded in 2013, Tlön Corp. Rather than taking the name for his company from Tolkien, however, Yarvin borrowed from Jorge Luis Borges. As Corey Pein notes in his book Live Work Work Work Die: The name Tlön referenced a short story by Jorge Luis Borges in which “a secret society of astronomers, biologists, engineers, metaphysicians, poets, chemists, algebraists, moralists, painters, geometers… directed by an obscure man of genius” built a “brave new world” that forced old cultures and countries into extinction.” This from this substack: https://www.dailygrail.com/2024/10/the-technocratic-conspiracy-how-tech-tycoons-plan-to-disrupt-democracy-and-become-the-new-rulers-of-the-world/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Great episode. I hope for more DC/GS crossover eps! FWIW to tumble around the ideas behind Borges' library, "A Short Stay in Hell" by Stephen Peck is a short/fun/bitter/fearful read

Damn you Michael Can't we just go back to Trump impressions 😢

Chick Corea recommending dianetics to you is incredible

If you put a naughty word into a Google search query, it won’t return any AI results. example: how to steal from Whole Foods no fucking AI bullshit I use Duck Duck Go for search but if you’re still using Google that’s a neat little trick

MG

Loved when you did an intro for one of Matt's Belgian x-files episodes. Can't believe this is the first time you guys got tonsit down and talk. Great episode

I take solace in the fact that information overload or deluge is a phenomenon as old as anything. The human mind has been incapable of encompassing things since antiquity. Like if you're conservative about information overload, if you posit that in a previous era information was more manageable, I mean obviously you just see that ignorance increases exponentially as you look backward... There was no golden era where the information environment was perfectly suited to the human mind. I've been thinking recently that these encounters some of us have with complexity or whatever are less indicators of a radically changing environment (info torrent and regimes of oppression have existed for many centuries) and more indicative of our changing minds as we come to experience more of the world in our own life cycles. It's natural for people to be thrown for a loop as we come to comprehension of the limits of our comprehension 🤷‍♂️

Would love to hear more collabs with Ghost in the future. Loved the reference to the “infinite library” of Borges and Angleton’s “wilderness of mirrors” to describe the overload of data. Big fan of both of y’all. Loved the Octopus series. Would love to hear any lengthy dialogue between you two.

David

I love your point about how AI isn't anything, especially along with the idea that it's become this dream to navigate an impossibly complex system, which further and further obscures that none of it actually is anything but the effort to scream over the fact that it's nothing but voices.

Kamran Husain

I guess praying works thanks for finally collabing

Best RFKJR I’ve ever heard

🎠

Thrilled you brought up Borges’ Library of Babel. Was just reading it the other day. “Poem of the Gifts” from his book of selected poems 1923-1967 has much the same quality: “…who with such splendid irony Granted me books and blindness at one touch.”

idiot.wisdom

Ontolgical paradox as pseudo-religious business venture? Man-made horrors well within our comprehension but entirely outside our ability to stop? Systems too complex to be understood and enmeshed to the point that even an attempt to simply them would cause mortal wounds to the host organism? Glad I got sober and sane just in time to absorb all of this with no chemical buffer

nathan

The conversation about complex information systems reminded me of this quote I wrote down from Austerlitz (iirc it was about all the ways libraries have become less useful): "in any project we design and develop, the size and degree of complexity of the information and control systems inscribed in it are the crucial factors, so that the all-embracing and absolute perfection of the concept can in practice coincide, indeed ultimately must coincide, with its chronic dysfunction and constitutional instability."

ggmacd

these might be the two funkiest whiteboys to ever do it

Pear Is A Patsy

Love that your RFK Jr. has a hint of Tom Waits and Burroughs hidden in there. Pro tip try gargling marbles and crack rocks while impersonating him, works for me.

Ben Schild

I dig, I struggle, and the exhaustion weighs on me, yet I finish this episode after six attempts while trying to fall asleep and succeeding. Inspiring nicotine pouch dreams a la pine pollen nasal congestion, high altitude hypoxia, a cautionary delivered by Patrick Bateman on the “Gorian Devolution” a class oppression conspiracy/cynicism. I must go back Jack and do it again. Et tu Angleton?

James Aydelotte

The question near the beginning of where Inslaw and the octopus ends is that it is happening now- Palantir is working with sub contracted PMCs under the ICE banner…

Nic Bodiford

This is too funny. I’m literally listening to this episode right now and the episode photo is now making the rounds on twitter with the Steak and Shake milk thing
