Nothing really happens until you announce it, so why do anything unpublicized?

R.I.P., Virginia Giuffre, and thanks for everything.

(I had expected to get thru this in one show, but there's a whole section of notes that I barely glanced at, so this is retroactively PART ONE.)

The Israeli attempt at extermination famine is getting unspeakably grim, and Rulin and Amjad could really use your help.

I am living in Australia and saw the news of Virginia's death. I wondered if anyone would even address it.

absolutely love this articulation of spectacle. And I enjoy spectacularian more. It implies the mystical/irrational element at the core of it

David Moon

Stunning work. Out of interest, and sticking with French thinkers, what do you think about Roland Barthes’ conceptualisation of the spectacle as a style of performance and how audiences engage with it - specifically as he describes it in ‘The World of Wrestling’? It’s a short and easily available piece but feels like it feeds directly in to what you’re getting at, not just because the word ‘spectacle’ is the same.

I believe the siren sound you're looking for is from the intro to "Ironside" by Quincy Jones.

NYCM&AHole

Nick Bryant has his own theory on Virginia Giuffre and it’s actually fairly plausible.

Really loving listening to you Michael. Let me know if you’re back in town. I’d love to get together.

Kyle Strupp

Doesn't look like anyone else has weighed in yet, so I'll cast my vote for spectacularian over spectacularist. It has a bouncing, jaunty sort of musicality and it's therefore very fun to say.

Tyson Settle

Michael I would like to ask you your thoughts on the neurological structure of human subjects and how they relate to things like the spectacle. Does it matter to you at all, or do you see that as a different level or reductive?

MRSAful Fate

Spectacularian is definitely better

David

You know Debord would be real, real mad at you for referring to his philosophy as "situationionism" right? He specifically and repeatedly disclaimed the label.

What is the image for this episode?

Gotta roll with Spectacularian. Gets at the ontology of these freaks

Have you ever read/interacted with any of Todd McGowan’s work?

Dude I'm not gonna be the baby brain and say "you gotta watch Parasite". Instead I'm gonna be the toddler brain and say "you gotta watch Memories of Murder" for that real granular look at how fascist Korea was not great through the eyes of some really shitty cops hunting a serial killer. I think that one is more your vibe. And if you like that then check out "Mother" and if you like that THEN check out Parasite. Bong Joon Ho does a good job of tracing the shift from fascism to neoliberalism across his career. I think it'd be something you do vibe with, even though everyone who sucked said Parasite was good for dumbass reasons, Bong Joon Ho does actually care to show that the world he grew up in was made, it doesn't just exist. And I just wrote the reason I think you might actually like his films. But start with Memories of Murder for sure. It's his best movie, and if your taste is anything like your brother's you'll agree that it's a tight movie.

I really like spectacularist because it’s like confabulist. Filling in memory with made up stuff. Filling in memory with made up spectacular memories like America singlehandedly won ww2. Seems right to me even though it’s old timey. What is old is new. Also as mentioned the siren is from the opening of the tv show ironside but is more famously used in Kill Bill to indicate that Uma Thurman has sighted one of the people who wronged her. So in modern culture it’s an indicator of “this is a bad person.” Also I think parasite was on the nose but pretty good. I dunno your taste in movies but it’s a fun time, especially the ending. If you watch it, the part where they make chapaguri with beef is a reference to poor people in Korea mixing two kinds of cheap noodles to make chapaguri but with like wagyu beef/filet mignon on top.

spectacularian rings very PT Barnum-esque to me and has the glow of a 19th century carnival where your great great aunt lost both her eyelids to fireworks. It gives a "nostalgia for hoaxes that end in bad chemical reactions" vibe that I like for 21st century america. I have to go with spectaculist though, because it sounds like a 12 year old in 2006's gamertag that Felix Biederman would make fun of. 12 years later, that 12yo would be 24 and making posts on r/pol calling himself a "spectaculist" and refusing to elaborate on what that meant. Present day that kid leads the kind of life portrayed by Conner O'Malley in every short film Conner O'Malley makes. So, sorry to say it's gotta be spectaculist. That's just how the world's put together these days.
