The Bicycle Rider, the Fool, the Nazi, and Teenage Orpheus get way too close to the American Dream.

Capital Knockers

Can't wait to listen to this if it even references Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks in passing!

Heath Iverson

Holy shit, please be the convergence of Death Corner and The Beach Boys I have so longed for.

Colin Kohlmeier

lol holy shit you're pretty confused about the details of Hamlet

Roberto Andrés Lantadilla

I don't certainly know why, but when you were talking about immagination, these lines of William Carlos Williams kept ringing in my ears: "and we degraded prisoners destined to hunger until we eat filth while the imagination strains after deer going by fields of goldenrod in the stifling heat of September Somehow it seems to destroy us It is only in isolate flecks that something is given off No one to witness and adjust, no one to drive the car"

Wooobie

I had the same thought about Hamlet when I read the play years ago. There's something very funny about a total lunatic who occasionally looks aside to the audience and goes "but we know i'm not REALLY nuts."

Tom McCall

Super Furry Animals shoutout appreciated. So much funner than all the "brit pop" bands around the same time

K

Fellini white boy midwest euro busthouse Brian Wilson summer???

Brennan Utley

Now this is what I call a death corner episode. Absolute banger

Heath Iverson

Over and over the crow cries uncover the cornfields

Sydney Thomas

Super furry animals mentioned :0 great ep!! I always learn so much not even just from pure information but how to speak and communicate in ways I couldn’t come up with on my lonesome! <3

Hemlock

What do you think of Shelley's assertion that poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world?

Ninety

If I give you $5 more a month will you record a whole audiobook of Gravity’s Rainbow

John Waaben

This ep pairs really well with the recent RWN episode about how genocide has made Israeli society deeply stupid/foolish (much like our country!)

Ollin

Dostoevsky feels like the elephant in the room , not just the idiot but also crime and punishment , in reference to raskonikov’s “leap of faith” that seems so ideallic and revolutionary but is also maddeningly stupid and born of delusion and a leap into a bottomless pit even if he makes it to the other side

mckinley faas

Sorry its like 4am but like dawg ain't this the plot of the original cube movie too?

Robert Maynard

I skipped around once I hit the end in case you had mentioned it and I missed it, but given the use of Zero throughout GR, it also seems relevant that The Fool is usually positioned as the 0th card of the major arcana. Black circular glasses and a bicycle also evoke twin zeroes, etc.

I’ve been obsessed with Song Cycle since I was a teenager, I’ve always found it to be incredibly strange/eerie/occulting…something. It makes America feel incredibly old, even ancient. I’d love to hear more from you about VDP.

Ben Degnan

Hey Mike. Hope yr as well as can be. This ep is hitting home more than most. Mental Health Worker currently on day 46 of a strike at Butler Hospital, the preeminent psychiatric hospital in Rhode Island and all SE New England. I’ve sadly seen many a young person experience the activation of latent schizophrenia through substances too many times to count. But neither here nor there, yr analysis resonates deeply everywhere, especially with me. Feeling like I’m on the bleeding edge of everything over here and you help make sense of that. Thank you, Courage and Solidarity Forever. 🙏🏼

Henry Baker

All-timer episode. What’s the song playing at the end?

Owen Martial

Harken to the clang of the yankee reaper

Madra na Móna

Interesting to hear you mention Wallace Stevens for the first time on the show. For my money a guy who was very talented in his early career at a kind of translation of Henri Rousseau and Paul Cézanne's visual senses into words along with having a decent ear, and then his later poems seem like an interminable and repetitive commentary on what was implicit in the form of his early stuff. Have you any strong feelings on him?

Rytone Rothslope

Especially at the end I also had to think of these two scenes from Gravity’s Rainbow: "Twenty minutes later, somewhere in the American sector, Slothrop is ambling past a cabaret where blank-faced snowdrops are lounging in front and inside, and a radio or phonograph somewhere is playing an Irving Berlin medley. Slothrop goes hunching paranoiacally along the street, here’s “God Bless America,” a-and “This Is the Army, Mister Jones,” and they are his country’s versions of the Horst Wessel Song, although it is Gustav back at the Jacobistrasse who raves (nobody gonna pull an Anton Webern on him) to a blinking American lieutenant-colonel, “A parabola! A trap! You were never immune over there from the simple-minded German symphonic arc, tonic to dominant, back again to tonic. Grandeur! Gesellschaft!” “Teutonic?” sez the colonel. “Dominant? The war’s over, fella. What kind of talk is that?”” And theres also this other, earlier quote, though it referers not to singinging voices but to the talking ones of the MP goons: “American voices, country voices, high-pitched and without mercy. He lies freezing, wondering if the bedsprings will give him away. For possibly the first time he is hearing America as it must sound to a non-American. Later he will recall that what surprised him most was the fanaticism, the reliance not just on flat force but on the Tightness of what they planned to do . . . he’d been told long ago to expect this sort of thing from Nazis, and especially from Japs—we were the ones who always played fair—but this pair outside the door now are as demoralizing as a close-up of John Wayne (the angle emphasizing how slanted his eyes are, funny you never noticed before) screaming “BANZAI!”"

Isn't "He Needs Me" from the 1980 POPEYE movie Van Dyke Parks? PTA and Jon Brion incorporated it into the PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE score; that's one more Pynchon degree of separation. Speaking of PTA, I have a really good feeling about ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. To hear it told, he and Pynchon are friendly and, while it may not be a 1:1 adaptation of VINELAND, it's safe to guess that it carries Pynchon's okay.

I’m currently watching Love and Mercy. My GF was watching it the day after Wilson died and just getting back to it. The movie seems to be pretty close to what you described, especially in regard to Landy. God, how I despise the “recovery” and pharma world.

Nosreffej

Are there any billy woods fans here? He is an amazing lyricist. I think you would all appreciate

Court Hansen

Woah I can’t wait to listen to this. Keep up the great work MSJ!

Court Hansen

Also I wanna say that one of the other incredibly stupid assumptions/implications in McGowan’s laurel canyon book is that the Wilson brothers found fame because their ancestors were stone masons

Mike S

I think the characterization of Brian being incapable of writing lyrics is a little unfair. It definitely wasn’t his strong suit but like "'Til I Die" is 100% him. Similarly Tony Asher wrote ad jingles but that was more where he was slumming it as a day job than being Don Draper type pitching “God Only Knows” in a boardroom. Good episode regardless. Go on Jokermen!

este

Loved this episode, especially the stuff about Van Dyke Parks. Great job dude.

Eric The Bed Humper.

Do you think Hitler's time working as a intelligence agent is often overlooked more than his failer of being a accomplished painter? He went from intelligence to politics that lead to nazism and not him being a failed painter. I'm tired so hopefully I wrote coherently.

Mike Bilbe-Taylor

We're so back. I never got into Wilson or The Beach Boys so these episodes are giving me a great entry point. Quick observation. Smile is some proto-Mr. BUNGLE extravaganza. Roll Plymouth Rock definitely influenced Patton.

No

Heard David Jones “The Anathemata” references by James Elkins on his Substack recently. He’s a strange dude. Would be interested in hearing you two speak today, not sure if you’d mesh, but would be cool still

Here via Erik Davis, only fifteen minutes in and loving it, in re: “bicycle rider” I just want to also mention Katje riding a bicycle to meet Enzian, wearing white, the color of the rose the Fool is holding in the RWS tarot deck (and of course all the other resonances of the color white in the novel). Just an image that always comes to mind when I listen to The Beach Boys. Excited to be here and to see where this ep/series goes. Cheers!!

I would argue that British Rock and Roll IS American Music
