I landed there when I could find *zero* discussion whatsoever of reports of one of Israel's five desalination plants being hit, early in the "war." Regarding the Iran-Iraq war that was black holed in every history textbook everywhere except those in Iran, I cannot recommend enough “The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East” by the late journalist Robert Fisk as an indispensable resource for understanding the modern Middle East. The book is parts memoir, journalism and historical context spanning nearly a century of Western (specifically Anglo-American-Israeli) brutality across the MENA region, covering everything geographically between the Algerian Civil War and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He dedicates four chapters to the Iran-Iraq war and the unspeakable horrors he witnessed there. Fisk and a colleague (Peter Jennings?) were the first to interview Khomeini during the Iranian revolution. He interviewed bin Laden twice. He despised authority, hypocrisy, and above all else the “unbiased objectivity” of Western “journalists”. The virulently anti-Zionist Israeli leftist Amira Hass once remarked that “There is a misconception that journalists can be objective. ... What journalism is really about is to monitor power and the centres of power.” To which Fisk added: “If you believe that victims should have more of a say than people who commit atrocities, then yes, I take a definite position.
