EDIT: just got the private Chuffed link that Rulin asked me to share here. By all means, share it with anyone you want, but ask them not to put it on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

GAZA. Internet access has been patchy at best since Palestinians started leaving Israel's concentration camp in Rafah and trying to get "home" via central Gaza, so I just heard from a close contact for the first time in months. I've been asked not to describe the situation in depth, but suffice it to say, truly foul shit is being done to Palestinians whose fundraisers have gotten much attention on social media. I'm trying to find a viable medium for posting fundraiser information without attracting whatever soulless sons of bitches – you wanna take a guess? – are doing the things I can't mention to the people I can't specify, and I hope I'll be able to find something I can post here, if nowhere else.

Be careful. Public platforms aren't safe for anybody now. Further context would compromise the privacy of people who cannot fuckin' afford that, but on a 1:1 level, I would encourage you to deal with fundraisers that hope to bring in a specific amount of money for a specific necessity – medicine, surgery, repairing tents, repelling the infinite vermin that now feed on the tent shanties. (But enough about Israel.)

None of this is about me, I'm not the important one here, but I must admit that I never imagined I would be asked to identify, from 6500 miles away, the huge swollen sores on a baby's face, or that I'd have to tell the mother "Those are rat bites." See a couple, and they're hard to forget.

More information as I learn and can say it, and thank you all

Would you consider doing something in written format for the music stuff, like Substack or whatever? Or use that as a backup whenever speaking is too straining? Not to put pressure or expectations on you or anything, but whatever medium you find feasible to communicate your Beatles (and music in general) knowledge, I’m there for it. Perhaps an interpretive dance. Or maybe a performance art installation in a gallery where the dress code is a turtleneck and a small pair of glasses

Lately I’ve been fascinated by the way Scott Walker used string sections, especially in his mid/late career records like CLIMATE OF HUNTER and TILT, but it’s there on his early solo records too. I don’t have a sturdy enough music theory background to really grasp at how he did it, but it seems like he’s taking the conventions of pop record string arrangements and contorting them just enough to get them to sound uncanny and unsettling, but not so much so that it’s completely obviously dissonant. It sort of unnervingly tightropes between consonance and dissonance. The image that comes to mind is that he’s warping cliches in the way an insect would use eyespot mimicry to confuse predators. You think you recognize it, but at the same time, something feels very wrong. Father John Misty used this technique all over his last album which I sort of have to think is a nod to Scott. Would love to know if you have any thoughts as to how they’re achieving this in the arrangement in more technical terms

Thanks for bringing up Bartók. I went a kind of college prep/music conservatory in high school and studied classical guitar and violin. During my later years in the guitar ensemble, we studied a lot of Bartók's pieces that he created as a part of his folk music, ethnomusicology thing and I always really enjoyed them. In my senior year we even got into some aleatoric stuff too, which was a relief after playing nothing but Bach and Fernando Sor etudes for what seemed like for fucking ever. It was a great education. I was also blessed to have some really great violin teachers who made bowing technique a little easier on me.

Great episode, Mr. Judge

K Brook

One of the best episodes to date, and I've listened to pretty much all I could. Thanks M

Gholson Lyon

incredible episode! Just awesome that you are doing more shows here related to music. Listening now to the Thrillington album on Qobuz with headphones. Seems like the only available one is the remastered 2012 version released by Hear Music. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrillington

BORING GIRLS

Fauré is my namesake, Ravel’s teacher. my mom played his nocturnes when she was pregnant with me and I blame him squarely for why I mostly only love “sad sounding” music with few exceptions Beautiful episode - my only caveat is that Eleanor Rigby is actually a perfect song to precurse I’m Only Sleeping, which always has and still annihilates me - a feeling I’ve known many times in my life as a major depressive, that sleeping sometimes is the only least painful thing and even then often delivers dreams with a special type of bereavement that only dreams can leave, but you take the risk and roll the dice because being awake is just too painful I think Dwight Twilley expanded on that perfectly here, you can def hear the influence of revolver : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fkdxvV1tykU

In the noble tradition of pure musical factoid pedantry, a lineage shared by this podcast, "catgut" strings are short for "cattle gut", not literal cats. Not that cows are less soulful or intelligent animals but they are at least ones that we already subject to industrialized abuse so we can do stuff with their body parts. Thankfully there's no crazed luthiers wandering the streets of Rome with a big leather bag and a hatchet abducting cats just to get that real pure fucking tone you can't get anywhere else. Those strings are just a byproduct of the same agricultural misery factories we've collectively accepted are necessary to keep the burger flowing.

Byron’s Glowing Filament

Ok. Listening to you talk about Bartok’s concertos, I’m thinking about the first page of Lot 49 where one of Oedipa’s distractions from thinking about the will is his fourth concerto. I always wondered why she was thinking about that specific piece of music. Does it have to do with this synthesis you’re taking about here? Or do you have any theories as to why she was thinking about that one specifically? Also, just listened to McCartney’s new album and my god. Just the first track itself is one of the best pieces of music I’ve heard that’s been released in the last decade.

you single handedly made me into a bowie apostle so i encourage you to get me to try another beatles album after rubber soul and some hits

The real Paul McCartney died in 1963 in a tragic double decker bus accident. Then he was replaced by the black Elton John who got plastic surgery and overcame his deadly dairy allergy

Really interesting episode Mr Judd it blew me away a bit. I have consistently listening to the Album “Wild Things” on the way to and from work. Why I decided to listen to this Wings album is beyond me. I did see Paul McCarthy on his last tour. It was an unbelievable concert. You are right in regarding Paul’s age. He is amazing he was still wearing Cuban heels on stage. I know myself that I can’t wear Cuban heels any more without twisting an ankle :-) . I highly recommend watching the get back documentary. It’s really worth watching. I was really interested in the part where the publishing rights. Northern Songs comes up. I think Yoko could smell a rat. Now that would be an interesting episode to do on how the Beatles lost their publishing rights.

I have a handful of Gazans that message me directly on Instagram and they are constantly having their accounts fucked with. I have very limited means, but one guy in particular who is caring for his elderly mother gets zero fuckin donations aside from me and it is the choice of do I absolutely need this $20 or can I send to my man cos he needs food and diapers for his mom. The other ones I have sent money to seem to be able to pull some resources aside from me, but they are all way bigger families. I have several in my message request folder that I haven't even gotten to yet, because I can't fucking do anything and sharing them to my tiny audience results in no donations anyway. That is all to say that I have the chuffed pages for several people that have proven the reality of their situation to me way beyond anything I would ask, if anyone wants a link let me know.

Some of the best pausework I've heard

Robert White

That’s a good recording of Le Sacre! That last screaming trumpet thing is usually too antsy and early, because the conductor is always ahead of the band so the strings don’t drag the eighth-note ostinato. Sounds like this orchestra actually listens to each other, which is rarer than one might think with professional musicians!

Metal Gear Solid, Seaman Eater

Father McKenzie was *darning* his socks?! I've been mishearing it as "knotting his socks in the night when there's nobody there" for 26 years. Darning makes more sense. Thankyou, Mr. Judge.

The Mahler Second is wonderful!

Think you’re being a little bit unfair to my boy Wagner. Yes Hitler loved him and his music has acquired a thick layer of haute bourgeois ‘Importance’ but he was personally on the barricades in 1848, and I think writing essays heralding ‘the music of the future’ and then putting those ideas into practice and forcing everyone else to react to him puts him alongside Pound as a pioneering modernist. Personally I could never get into opera until I heard Das Rheingold last year, which I think is just magical from start to finish. Of course just because he was important doesn’t mean anyone has to like the music. But I felt compelled to comment haha. Great episode anyway - thank you as always.

Regarding the shower stabbing scene in Psycho and censors, it’s my understanding that they were MORE horrified by the sight of the flushing toilet than anything else. Which, really points your point into deeper context. This was a real Ron Donald Do episode btw.

Jeanne Vomit-Terror

Is the Webern piece Six Bagatelles? I remember checking that out as a teenager and digging it.

Once again i'm left to figure out how this is all about birds...

"Almost fuck Faulkner" Thank you, Mr. Judge, for yet another classic episode.

Roarschach_Muckracken

I don’t know what’s happening but it makes up for the use of smashing pumpkins .

This is Pharmacist

Jenny Wren. Obviously I've never heard the song before or I wouldn't be saying what I'm about to say, which is I genuinely was 100 percent convinced that was the vocals and guitar of MSJ. There's a certain affectation that is far too similar and I swear it might as well be and will ignore the fact that a simple internet search will relieve my refusal to disabuse myself that it's a McCartney track.

Lark is voted bbc radio three listeners top piece every year, it's good fun. Thanks for pointing me to the chaos and creation album when you tweeted about it whenever long ago. Wanted to hear more of ur Beatles shit ever since u mentioned them as having down The Imagination of childhood, childhood darkness, etc etc.

Hugh Jazz

As a dullard, I’m someone who needs to have classical music/ theory “explained” to me, but as a music fan/ lover once it’s been explained to me it blows my mind and I can fully appreciate it. This was one of your most interesting episodes yet

D.M.,ME

I’d like shout out Rites of Spring, the Discord band, who rescued 15 year old me from listening to NYHC fascist bullshit and also prompted investigation into the OG Rites of Spring, which lead to trying to learn cello. I gave up but it was a good time.

wagner's fine he's just self indulgent and had an outsized impact on film and etc. scoring. idk I got reactions when I tried to get people to listen to fucking prog rock which I think is more funny with how self indulgent it can be.
