Onward and deadward with DeLillo's Mao II, one of the most misread novels in the modern "canon," which would matter if anything involving "canon" mattered.

I was listening to this today in retrospect and I noticed that you discuss "Crash" without ever touching on Vaughn's motivation to unite himself with Elizabeth Taylor through the violence of a car crash, a motivation I thought seemed to have sympathies with your discussions of the iconosphere and the motivations of an Oswald elsewhere. I was curious if I could be right in reading it that way or if there's something I'm not understanding about the iconosphere as you use it.

My feed hasn't updated, and I can't get ep to play thru patreon app. Did something get changed by patreon? edit - as usual, I spoke too soon. feed has updated finally. still won't play on patreon app though.

"dialectics" has usually been a big red flag for me. My least favorite thing that a lot of marxists that I otherwise admire a lot have said (and even used as an argument!) is the idea that marxism (unlike other political ideologies?) is a "science." I can't fathom how, even if that were true, it would even mean anything? Brings to mind that whole oneirine dialogue in GR, raising doubts that there can be anything in this world that wouldn't be used as an opiate of some kind. Which, like you say about reading novels, shouldn't equate to a blind acceptance of infinite perspectives on our situation, there are still things that we can/will say are definitively more wrong... I should probably get to reading that Levinas as soon as I can because I feel like I'm wading into metaphysics that I haven't thought enough about yet.

There was always something that grated me about Delillo too despite having relatively fond memories of reading White Noise as an 18/19 year old and really enjoying Libra - I always felt like I really had to try and like everything else, to kind of see something that wasn’t always there. It was nice to hear how you framed it! The mention of William Gaddis in this episode makes me have to ask again - will we ever hear you go one on one with big daddy Gladdy? Also - thanks for getting the podcast out, really sounds like times are tough and your clear sense of responsibility to DIJATC makes me want to always support you even if it is one podcast a year! Hope things take a turn for the better.

This topic is turning out some fucking bangers.

Honestly these episodes should be the next to go public if you feel like doing that.

im here for the warhol dragging lol despise his shit og rev moon is dead but check into his sons they do not disappoint.. one still runs the unification church... another believes he is the rightful leader and has his own sect, the bullet crown wearing gun service church you may have seen around the time of the recent gun debates bringing their AR15s to church.. that son also does a whole alex jones schtick, pretty badly but wildly fash.. and then another son who owns a legit small arms manufacturing company which is... um yeh something.. i meant to comment on the last ep also cause i thought it was interesting you started by quoting prodigy cause i think Hiphop has def explored this.. graffiti writers go bombing.. the description of terrorism you used in this episode as apocalypse for me describes the graffiti writer.. which then i guess could bring it back to warhol & his obsession with his replacement basquiat somehow or another.. samo word! happy i finally became a patron and have new episodes to listen to!

Man I completely forgot about The Body Artist. I remember getting a copy out of the library and reading it at work when I had a warehouse job a few years ago, only time I've read a novella and thought what a fucking waste of time.

Iain Sinclair I’m already well aware of - it’s one of life’s joys having grown up in London and learnt to hate it and have Iain Sinclair categorically convince you otherwise. I’m waiting for my copy of Radon Daughters as we speak. On Catling - I only know him from his Vorrh jaunt which I wasn’t that impressed with outside his imagery. Will give his poetry a go! And you absolutely sold me on John Wilkinson! Can’t wait for next weeks episode! Will it also dive into 1. Outside more?

Robert

MJ you giving away who one of your prospective guests are? I was going to guess him but I thought it was unlikely. And yeah it’s clear from all his work, interviews (I was gutted to miss out on his last London talk with Stewart lee 2 years back) that the guy is rock solid. And I’m a fan of Quin - got into her thru BS Johnson comparisons I think?

Robert

P.s. so happy the series will be 4 episodes long! This stuff is all fantastic!

Robert

I haven’t read the unfortunates yet, one of those few books I’m saving for an unknown crisis in my life (like against the day by Pynchon which I think I will read when he dies) but if you come across marleys own double entry, trawl or a house mother normal - they’re all worth a read esp. Marley, his philosophy on life had a big influence on me as a pup. For all the talk about Johnson being avant garde, actually he’s rather tame, it’s his big fluffy down trodden characters I remember - not the holes in the page.

Robert

Unfortunately like Quin he took a rather extreme venture out of this earth.

Robert

Sure - no judgements Mr. Judge. I’ll stop with the flamboyant commenting! Have a nice week and can’t wait for next ep

Will you do an episode specifically about the Years of Lead in Italy? After reading Twenty Days of Turin the years of lead had a schizophrenia that rings horrible true today,
