But it was only a fantasy.  (The wall is too high, as you can see.)  No matter how I try, I will not break free, and the worms eat into my brain.

Get well soon, Matt Christman, and bring the boys back home.

I have had Bring the Boys Back Home stuck in my head all week

definitely qualify what you do as art, if I can speak for all of us on this side of things

Ever consider getting back to Scott Walker for a music ep?

Thomas

We all love you galactic pimp Matt, everybody who can really hear your words and your mind and your heart loves you. Get better soon. 🙏

Just a small clarification (cos I live near the Isle of Dogs and you mentioned this in one of the Bowie episodes) - Derek Beackon was never a Member of Parliament. He was an elected local councillor. Which is bad enough, but an order of magnitude less horrifying.

Ocko

Excellent ep mind.

Azerbaijan wants to finish what the Ottoman Empire started Imo, and Turkey will help them do it

also being someone who has been in the depths of psychosis more often than i care to mention i appreciate you mentioning the logic that comes with that psychosis.

Been listening to a lot of Ghost Stories and just listened to the Cielo Drive ep, where Matt talks about how the state/surveillance/corporate apparatus invaded the counterculture and, like one of those nightmare parasites that (apologies here) fuckin eats your brain and takes control of your motor functions for its own ends, nightmare shit, effectively transformed it all into something that - maybe without having even fully supposed the end state of it all - bore only a parodic resemblance to the original dream, actively sucked, and was then/now peopled almost exclusively with narcs and turncoats... made me think of something you discussed in one of your paganism episodes; I think it was a commenter on here who cited the line from Carpenter's THE THING, re: Christianity and those religions and practices that preceded Christianity, paganism and otherwise, "That THING wanted to be US, man!" And these seem to be ideas united in some of what you talk about in this ep. I mostly agree with your ideas about works of art communicating to one another across a body of work. As an unreconstructed auteurist film-head, that's one of the central tenets of a certain brand of cinephilia. It's also one of the points of contention between different channels of cinema studies and cinephilia at large. There's a lot of baggage that I won't get into, but something about the notion that, say, the films of Stan Brakhage, or Alfred Hitchcock, or Michael Mann, or any of a vast number of auteur directors, are not all discreet little monads, to rise or fall on their own merits, was enough to really set people off. I mean it: more than a fair share of well-known critics, still at large to this day, either get very upset, or will laugh you off, if you suggest that there's any connective tissue between individual works. (My experience with film studies in academia exposed me to a similar skepticism among profs of various stripes: under that dome, auteurism is/was viewed as something rather like Marvel or Disney fandom: quaint at best, something one had better grow out of, if one would like to be taken seriously. There might be some Death of the Author thing going on there that I never really got the hang of.) Was at a drinks get-together where a friend was talking to me about the way (the great) Roberto Rossellini was of such a caliber of artist that he effectively reinvented the cinema 24 times per second and I said it reminded me of Stephen Wright's joke about 24 hour banking ("I don't have that much time"). Sorry for clogging the replies with another long and boring post. Thanks again for putting me on to Ghost Stories. I don't agree with his assertion that The Smiths had only 2 good tunes but obviously nobody in their right mind will take a bullet for that shit-heel Morrissey. And of course, speedy recovery to Matt Christman; MSJ you do NOT sound bad on those episodes before you kicked the junk, go easy on yourself. Ok have a good weekend everybody

To some it all up in the words of one of the great poets of our time, Peter Townshend: Teenage wasteland It's only teenage wasteland Teenage wasteland Oh, yeah

Wow, based on your tweet the other day I’ve been listening to The Wall (hadn’t in years, nay, decades) and now this!

Incredible timing doing a Roger Waters episode just when the media launch another disgusting attack against him.

Hard disagree on music festivals. Wacken Open Air was great every time I went except for when it was inches of mud

Patrick!

Used to be very into Pink Floyd when I was a kid then soured on em as a teenager because I found a lot of it fake deep and the guitar solos kinda grating, also just because I'm a contrarian. Gotta go back n check em out to see how I feel with a now

"There would be an opposition easy to establish between the government of Vichy and the government of de Gaulle. Vichy invoked guilt, and every Frenchman had to manage the interior revolution on his own account; as if interior life and the revolution were compatible. Begin, they said, by repentance; and they instituted a kind of cult of remorse. The government of de Gaulle, on the contrary, reveals us as leader a possible exterior world, in which France was great. As for means to guarantee that greatness, this is not much of an issue. Some people will see it as idle chatter. In fact, it is idle chatter, and worse: contradiction, unless the current government is not revolutionary, and with certain formal characteristics of a revolution is nonetheless a reactionary government. Which, for that matter, is possible." (Gilles Deleuze, "From Christ to the Bourgeoisie," 1946)

I have always put The Final Cut into a sort of spiritual category with The Wall, kinda like bookends. There’s overt reference to Thatcherism, austerity, emptiness and isolation in The Final Cut that really kinda punctuates much of what The Wall developed re that WWII sludge that gave us the ‘60s hangover.

Adam

Another absolute BANGER

The pod is always great but the last 30 mins of every episode is on another level. Would love for you to talk about the Beatles for an hour.

I think the only music festival I've ever attended was Tattoo the Earth in 2000, when I was 14 and Slipknot was huge. Great episode, love the music episodes.

You’ve been killing it lately, Michael. Great show and a gorgeous mixed outro.

On behalf of the Canadian 4th Reich: we're sorry. We're deeply sorry we gave a standing ovation to the guy who put Gottfried into the rocket. You must understand our embarrassment, doing this so close to our national day of Truth and Reconciliation. "Every child matters." A holiday for 4,000 tiny skeletons and who knows how many more to come. The "cultural genocide" we decided that we have committed is but a modest species of genocide. When one meets foreign dignitaries of the grander genocides, well, it is impolite not to applaud.

Brian

You’ve done it to me, I’ve been down a major PF rabbit hole lately. If you haven’t heard it, I HIGHLY recommend their live album release of The Wall from the 80/81 shows called “Is There Anybody Out There.” So good.

So what you're saying is that you agree with the nostalgia critic's review of The Wall

Incredibly late here so not sure if you'll see this, but I also started having more vivid and freaky dreams after quitting drinking, and ESPECIALLY after quitting smoking (as of last Sep). I guess my brain, being less sedated all of a sudden, had to catch up on whatever was waiting in the queue to be processed, maybe started running a little too hot—and that was from no more nicotine! I can't hardly imagine the dreams you get from kicking opioids, so that in mind I'm grateful you & this show are here with us now. Peace and love
