I'm a bit confused - panels 2-4 is Kalkgur, and panel 6 is He Who Knows What He Did? First thought taking the meat was Kal failing the test (proving to be bloodthirsty) and thus being chained up.

Kal has to carry the meat to him. The perspective is drawn to show getting closer to his chamber over the last few panels

Ya know what, I am thinking that the test is whether Kal *eats* the meat or not. If he eats it then it shows that his hunter instincts are becoming unchained and he is irredeemable. If he doesn't eat it, then he passes the test.
