Nobody ever claimed that HWKWHD was stupid. He knows who he can get through to and who he can't. He didn't even bother telling Kalgkur that the meal he just delivered was Soylent Red(Likely with a familiar face), a gotcha that would probably have been reserved for a convenient tipping point if one had existed. Instead he sees Kalgkur has already fallen off of the OTHER side.

Yo, you can't hit me with such heavy, epic lines on a lazy Saturday morning!

Flora P-Stylianides

The implication of an explicit creation is interesting. Either it's a generic religious belief, or the Baxxid were *made*. Gosh! How exciting! Also what is it with dire warnings always being as vague as possible. Like. Spell it out u dumbus. Say shit is fucked, *please*. Anyway I hope they're rlly cute together <3

Thorin N. Tatge

I assumed it was just his way of saying it was the deepest source of satisfaction for them, much like one talks about one's own purpose. Perhaps a religious belief, though... I don't think we're meant to imagine anyone made the baxxid.

Thorin N. Tatge

Agony? No! Would that be the ordinary agony of outliving one's partner, or... some secret thing? Or maybe just really bad sex I wonder what "coalescing" is and why it's associated with killing a human and why it feels so great. It would've been interesting if Kalkgur had mentioned that the yinglets have citizens' rights now. So, it's not -just- human creations he chases!

ContaTM

When an argument with a preacher ends with them saying something like "well, have fun going to hell then", thats how you know you won that argument.

Varyon

I think the hell being referenced is a combination of outliving those you love combined with denying oneself the euphoria of coalescence. From context, coalescence is the rush they get from fighting, killing, and feasting. It's interesting that they've chosen (or their own word is translated as, I've never been clear on if they speak their own language or just a human language at infrasound frequencies) a word that means "coming together" to describe this.

Andrew Denton

It feels to me that their arguments boil down to "Persue your biological imperative, damnit!" Vs "I am more than my biological drives." I have to say my sympathies lay (lie?) with the latter.

Flora P-Stylianides

As far as I can tell, he's talking about killing. Purposeful killing for a reason beyond survival. When Kalghur mentions coalescence I thoight it could be something like the photosynthesising Baxxid, but it seems to be something else that's related to killing and this kind of truth the Baxxid are supposedly hiding from. Very few creatures in nature kill for no purpose. And since there has not to my knowledge been mention of a core Baxxid religious or philosophical belief related to this, and the fact that 'created' is in italics, leads me to believe this is something else. It's exciting!

Finvaara

I think the implication is that more than one young Baxxid has developed a hand fetish and found an open-minded human to relate to, and then things haven't gone well for reasons that he believes are inevitable. I have my speculations, of course, which could be entirely baseless and unfounded. Mostly based on what we know about Isher.

Thegs

I can't help but feel like coalescence is some sort of like... social... event? Thing? Like they have language and social hierarchies, so at the very least they were probably social beings before awakening. Maybe something like, "a group of baxxids come together to scourge the lands"? Or maybe the baxxid used to "rule" the world, when HWNWHD is first introduced it is said "[the baxxid] fiercely stamp out any talk of taking the mountains for themselves," and to coalesce is like, their "birthright" of being the apex species?

One’s Hell is another’s Heaven. Go in peace Kal…you have passed judgement.

Conversations with (insert nazi/cultist analog here) are always so much fun!

He's not speaking about the afterlife, he's saying his hopes are doomed to end in tragedy.

Oh yeah this kid's going hard humanaboo

valsalia

HEY NOW I posted it on Friday night >:V

valsalia

The boneworms are, in fact, very weighty

He Who Knows What He Did Knows Kalgkur Knows What He Who Knows What He Did Means

It might be a while before yinglets create anything the baxxid are fascinated by, at least for the right reasons

Thorin N. Tatge

Yes, I certainly wonder what this "coalescing" is. The best I can guess is, if baxxid kill enough of their enemies, they can enter a collective fugue state in which they share their thoughts and feelings? But that doesn't seem heavy enough or plausible enough. Or, maybe it's just "If we dominate the world, all our dispersed kin will be brought together and we will be able to build the final kingdom." That could work!

Gregory

I wonder if Kalgkur is going to need to work for Ran as punishment. I'm not 100% sure if it would make sense in story but it certainly would be convenient and fairly reasonable for merging viewpoint characters!

Thorin N. Tatge

Oh yeah, an agony of combination. Above, I speculated that coalescing might refer to a belief that they will come together and build the final baxxid kingdom over the world if they can just slay all their enemies. But maybe it's how they have kids? Cut a body open and lay eggs in the cavity, ew

Flora P-Stylianides

I'm thinking more sci-fi. Imagine this. The Baxxid are a constructed race, biotechnology. The foot soldiers of a long-gone hypertech species. Their purpose is to be warriors, defenders, security. But their creators are long gone. They've been living as long as they could by themselves and with humans have found somewhere they can be more than literal killing machines. More than a hive mind. I believe coalescence ('come together to form one mass or whole') is the state they were in when they were soldiers. A hive mind of warrior beasts. They broke that gestalt and have become individual, but the threat of coalescence us still there, if they indulge in the instincts and behaviours they were created for. There's already a precedent. But hey, my theories are never right so is probably smth way cooler

ComicTF

Kids these days, always looking at their baubles. Meanwhile these humans are coming in their caravans bringing alien customs. I miss the good ol' days.

EveryZig314

I also read this page as implying the Baxxid were made, which fits with how I think it has already been implied that Yinglets were made (with how they can be created via artifact) and human artifacts/history imply that humans used to have a lot more tech (and maybe came from space).

Flora P-Stylianides

*tinfoil hat equipped* I actually don't think it was humans. I have the (rather crazy, I know) theory that it's the Ivenmoth. That they're just vibing on the planet after having once had some kind of ultra-civilisation. They do seem to be smarter than normal moths, and every so often you'll see one on the walls, watching
