Today, I'm speaking with love and esteem about Balatro, a tiny passion project turned award-winning indie phenomenon. The game is genius in its simplicity and its delivery, but the story of its development is even more charming and inspired. Listening to LocalThunk speak reminds me a lot of Garfield describing the origins of Magic, funny enough.

My guy your hands are too big for a switch lite 😭 In all seriousness, balatro is easily my game of the year, probably my game of the decade (so far). It’s simply so… perfect in everything it does. Also thanks for the heralds horn shoutout xoxo

Roguelike fan? Play "Inscryption" if you haven't: Flavorful card game, great mechanics/complexity... I am ready to bet 50$ you'll fall in love with the game.

If you want to try more rogues I couldn't recommend enough The Binding of Isaac, one of the big names of the genre and a personal favorite

Gift guides and end of year recaps are both 'curated lists.' I think it boils down to you appreciate people having opinions and taste, and sharing them. Spending time, paying attention, that's how you show the things you love. Seeing what people love is connection at the best possible level. PS: I've unlocked all the jokers in Balatro on 3 different platforms now (Steam, Xbox and Apple Arcade). Game of the last several years for me.

There's something beautiful about the broad accessibility of balatro. It reminds me of playing pinball and solitaire on my grandpas computer in the late 90s and getting to sit and talk about games with family members for the first time. I've been coming to love more roguelikes and auto battlers to scratch that limited player itch more without as steep a cost to entry.

Thanks for putting this out! I am currently at a point in my life where I am now playing through my extensive Switch backlog with my 4 year old. I cannot describe to you the joy and deja vu it brings me to see my son experiencing the same awe, wonder, and fun that defined my own childhood. And in a little cosmic coincidence that also made me smile, he is super into the Mario + Rabbids games. One other thing that popped into my mind while listening, I would be incredibly interested in seeing/hearing what all of your interests are in your room, waiting to be picked up. What they are, why you picked them, what you hope to get from them, etc. Could be fun little mini-clips to pick one or two to highlight periodically!

"someone, somewhere is banging their head against the wall like 'Sam, you have to play Hollow Knight again, it's amazing!'" It's me, I'm someone, can't wait for you to finish Hollow Knight and binge Mossbag videos to learn more about the lore.

The file download here always gives me an incomplete mp3 that stops at 16 minutes. (Gonna listen on the site now)
