Tonight, I'm chewing on all my successes, failures, and controversies with the Final Fantasy set and the video I made on the subject. What happens when we put our pride aside to celebrate the joys of others, even at the expense of our own? Maybe we find something to love in it ourselves.Music:ピンクレモネード - Closure in Moscow

I think as your channel gets bigger, you'll unfortunately have to stop reading the comments. It's one of those crappy things where as a community there are enough loud negative voices to make it seem like a disproportionate amount of people behave negatively. The other thing is that final fantasy is a pretty huge part of the childhood of a high % of your fan base. Considering how hard the nostalgia button has been pushed the last 5 years. People are raw and passionate in their discussions of it. For whatever reason the reason parts of their brains lose all power and they say some stuff that steps way too far over the line. The video is still great and it was entertaining to see a fresh set of eyes developing opinions and learning about such a large franchise. I'm sure there are lessons that can be learned and you'll continue to grow as an artist. Keep being awesome.

Wizards has been exceedingly egregious with how they've been pushing sets and prices higher. But I will say, a potential positive that could come from this is the number of players where it's the last straw and they decide to make a new forgetful fish style format. We've already seen a pretty big uptick in side formats. The creativity of using our old bulk and bringing fun from a whole new angle. Wizards being butt's is the pressure cooker of invention.

What a wonderful video! As a kid I was right in the middle of the venn diagram of MTG and FF. That final quote from Deken had me feeling shivers. Somehow I had not until this UB crossover ever quite understood the shared fabric between these two properties. They were formative for me but most importantly were critical in unleashing certain aspects of my mind and imagination. I’m glad you were able to experience some of the delight that is this quirky, poignant, silly, melodramatic and lyrical thing that is Final Fantasy. Although the best Square game is one that is not even Final Fantasy - Chronotrigger. I hope you get a moment to check that one out. Oh by the way - did you know that Thancr…

My older brother was given Final Fantasy 3 (6) when it first came out for the SNES. I would have been around 9 at the time and I remember watching that opening with the mechs in the snow and thinking, “This feels Serious. I didn’t know video games could do that.” Fast forward a few years and FF7 was the first game I purchased with my own money (and the first game I spent 50+ hours on). By the time FF8 came out we knew someone who worked at Square and he was able to get us a copy from their internal store or something like that. The game was (of course) the same but the paper that wrapped around the case had holes punched in it I believe. It was awesome (like getting a serialized version of your favorite card without the exorbitant price tag). I’m currently trying to collect the entire set of FF cards. Not to sell, just to admire. Not sure there’s another IP I’d do that for (besides the Cosmere). I don’t know that I’ll go after the surge foils even though they are gorgeous because of the extreme prices. That makes me sad, but maybe over time I’ll treat myself. Anyway, your video and this episode made me feel nostalgic (in the best way), so thanks for that.

Am I the only one that this episode is just a copy of the Balatro episode? Dunno what’s going on.

I actually got a copy of Final Fantasy 6 because of how much you talked about it😅

More side formats ! I’ve just made a mono black dan dan inspired deck of bulk and stuff from the common box… and I love cube.

On the point about seeing more negative comments, it’s just a symptom of your platform and voice growing larger. Those voices always seem to be the loudest, even if they’re fewer in number. The way I look at it is, if you have haters it means you’re doing something right. Internet jerks don’t attack nobodies 🤷‍♂️

The FF video was dope. Im not necessarily a UB stan but I cannot understand why you would be getting splash hate for exploring it. FF is sick, magic is sick, maybe I would prefer if they were in their own lanes. I think a lot of the set is a massive whiff, and a ton of it is an absolute slam dunk. At the end of the day. Its all still Magic Thanks for keeping it real, giving this set a shot, documenting that journey in a way only you could and double thanks for helping share the voices of other people who had their lives touched in some way by the series.

I love listening to the Rhystic Cast. You are much more open about yourself and I enjoy hearing that. I appreciate the difference to your usual content.

What you were saying about the timelessness of these games really resonated with me. I didn’t grow up with Final Fantasy, but after getting curious watching 15 and eventually falling in love with 14 through second-hand experience, I wanted to know what it felt like playing these games too. Like you I picked up 6. I knew 6. I knew what happened in the story, I knew who Kefka was, what he would do, I’d listened to Dancing Mad. But I didn’t know what it would feel like. I didn’t know how it would feel watching that haunting opening, that upon recruiting a new party member I’d suddenly have access to fighting game inputs in a turn-based RPG. I knew about suplexing the train, but was utterly unprepared to have my heart wrenched mere moments later by a somber farewell between people who deserved better. I knew the world would be destroyed, but was utterly unprepared for all the associations bubbling up in me when wandering through apocalyptic wastes with Celes - whose presence in the opera scene I’d been equally unprepared for. I’d heard Dancing Mad before, but I’m so, so happy that I chose to truly experience it as well. When I was a boy, I remember reading about FF9 in a magazine, how it enchanted me. But we weren’t a console house, so I never experienced it. Over 20 years later I’m now doing just that, and it is giving me so much joy, and made me realise what my personal favourite games aesthetic is. Like many others, I do miss what I used to feel about Magic, am saddened that I may never feel so again about a new release. But choosing, like you’ve done, to embrace other aspects and find new joy does appeal to me more than a perceived allegiance to a cause. As you’ve said, there is nothing wrong with feeling how you’ve expressed in Your Foundations are Rotten, and still be in awe of the Primal Clay of Magic. Really happy you continue to share your thoughtful insights, and looking forward to many more.

Im sure ive commented about this somewhere before but your Wrath of God video was something I watched early in my magic lifespan and it really showed me the amount of reverance the art in this game deserves. Its a large part of why Im so entrenched in magic to this day. So thank you for that!

I'm SO glad that FF6 is the one that you started it. It was also my first traditional Final Fantasy and it immediately made me go "oh, I get it now" and shot nearly to the top of my favorite games list.

Was a huge fan of Zakeel when he was uploading at Merfolk Magic and the Collect and Spec cast. Love to see him being so successful in his new role at Wizards!

I came back to magic last year after like 24 years and your videos have been such a cool way to get caught up. What I love is the emotional connection to the cards, decks and art and sets. The game and the aesthetic is so deep with lore and references to mythology I'm just really grateful for your deepdives. It sucks that people make such horrible comments. For artists a mistake that we see in our own work eats at us. a mistake that someone points out to us absolutely consumes us.. I understand that.

Everyone knows Thancred is from final fantasy 3.
