I don't remember much of the first half of 2021, but everything since June has been a whirlwind of growth, production, and work. Today, I sit down and reflect on the year behind me and establish what I want out of the year ahead.

Topics include finishing the Ph.D., living in Kaldheim, Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, the WotC sponsorship, and the pros and cons of Vegas.

Music in this episode (in order of appearance):Nayt - FavolacceGhali - Boogieman (ft. Salmo)Madame - Il mio amico (ft. Fabri Fibra)

Thank you Sam for making me discover Dave Bull's channel. The man is a treasure trove of great insights about art and life, and just such a great presenter. I could probably listen to him talk about anything. I'm also in the same boat as you with Kaldheim. I don't play Magic, but love the worlds that revolve around it (both real and imaginary), and Kaldheim has resonated with me so much that I bough my first cards since probably OG Theros. I'm desperately longing for more stories and art about the realms. What a wonderful thing they made. Looking forward to what the new year will bring on the channel! PS: hai scelto solo canzoni pazzesche. Grandissimo!

This is great! I really enjoy hearing more about the details of the videos and more about things to come. I also dig the sharing of tunes, too.

Really loved this reflection on the year, Sam, and the insights into your methodology, process, and future plans. Just as you say, I see you as being able to be a unique ambassador for the "greater MtG idea space" (the game, the art, the themes, etc) to an audience that nobody else reaches today. I love that you're leaning into it, and I'm excited for how far you'll be able to take it!

Really liked the idea of starting the new year early and making December a Monday. This saves you from all the emotional turmoil of "finishing" a year.

Hey Sam, great episode. I try not to overwhelm you with my comments but you discussed a lot of interesting things. Starting the new year on 1st Dec? Man, December for me is always trying to catch up with the fact that the year is ending. But the advice that Monday is for momentum is great advice. Speaking of which, going professional sometimes means having a more planned out schedule, but it contrasts with the research style that I share with you, that is: going off on tangents and diving into rabbit holes. How do you reconcile these two? Do you already have a topic for each month laid out for '22 or do you let yourself get lost in whatever interests you at the moment and do a video on that? And how has your research method and overall "content creator" (I know) strategy changed since you started? I'm so happy that you mentioned Theros as your third possible plane. To me, Theros isn't a good representative of Magic, but it is my favourite plane. I joined the game when it came out and I'm just obsessed with Greek mythology. That plane is like a perfect adaptation of Greek myths into a fantasy world and into a fantasy game. I love its interpretation of the underworld, of how gods work, the concept of the Nyxborn; and I also love the mechanics of buffing up your brave heroes to fight off scary monsters, and how bestowed auras and enchantment creatures represent the supernatural, the Nyx-stuff seeping into the human world. To me, few planes make this much sense.

Please keep being selfish! The videos you’ve done that seem the most introspective or tangentially related to MTG have been some of my favorite. You have a very unique vision of the MTG experience, and often the questions you ask about a card, or a plane, or an artist are the ones that resonate with me the most. However, although I have a great appreciation of art, I don’t have enough sophistication to know the question to ask. Although I play almost daily, I feel most connected to the game through your content. Looking forward to more Rhystic Studies! Thanks for all you do.

Super cool hearing about your process! Earlier in the talk you mentioned wanting to do a metal section of the Kaldheim video but maybe you'd return to the concept if we go back to Kaldheim or if metal becomes relevant again. Personally, I wouldn't care at all if you did a video that had no direct ties to what currently happening in magic. I'd say do whatever you're passionate about and I'm sure us fans are going to love it. You have a reputation for making top notch quality stuff, feel free to work on whatever timeline you want.

And congrats on the Ph.D. and thanks for all the great content!

Finally got around to finishing this. Really really enjoyed it. I wouldn't be upset at all if you did sort of post-mortem style podcasts once in a while.

This^ 100%

Its very encouraging in a way to hear you talk about how arduous the process is XD like, while you have a knack for it's not exactly talent, its more about research, effort and patience, it kinda gives me some breathing room when I think about how I am progressing in my job and hobbies. I hope you keep getting the chance to work with Wizards and that you make a transition into "professionalism" that sits well with you and that fits into your couple life.

I just finished the review. Thanks so much for this intimate look into your life in 2021. It actually answered many questions I had about you and the channel. I was thinking how it would be great if you also did mid year review and you actually ended up addressing this as you speculated about maybe doing more of these and possibly as a companion podcast alongside your videos. I also was thinking about how your recent videos noted little tokens offered to new subscribers of Patreon and I was wondering about those of us who joined during those lean years when you were busy finishing your PhD and had less time available for your art and passion. I am not bitter and understand there may be costs and logistics that preclude a carve-out for us, but just to put it on your radar. Finally, as I wait to start my Christmas Day, I hope yours is a wonderful one filled with family and feasts and festival. This season must be especially marvelous now that you are done with your academic work as it was and can now look forward to the professional future of Sam and of Rhystic Studies and all that may come with that both public and personal. Best of all to you and yours!
