How do we remember a set a year removed? Five years removed? Ten years removed?

Today, I'm discussing the resonating power of Magic's larger worlds and how they contrast with the recent, city-in-a-bottle concepts like Strixhaven and New Capenna. I then go into detail about my frustrations with the ongoing glamorization of Mafia in media, how parody lets viewers off the hook, and touch on the heavier topics that were cut from my video The Lies of New Capenna.

I was listening and soaking in the ideas of what you were ranting about. And my conclusion is it’s probably just about making profit. How does wizards make a profit. Could explain the very obviously motif sets as they probably make money and bring in new players. A video about the toxic player base of magic or gaming in general from you would be interesting.

Hey, I really liked the 2x2 video.

Sam...keep up all the good work. Please don't let them get you down. Good Luck with your move. All the Best...Richard...Seattle...and a fellow CU Allum.

MURDER SNACKERS

my official statement regarding my trust in you as an artist and person, as a dying-hard former book publisher: do whatever the fuck you want and I'll support you 👍

Jacob Torbeck

You know this already, but I truly appreciate where you come from on these, Sam, and often find myself asking similar questions from my own situation. Thanks for spending the extra time to have these further "conversations."

I really like to hear your perspectives, insights and thoughts. Your content is amazing, but even then we cannot always be "perfect" or liked by everyone all of the time, so as you continue to be yourself, people's support will always come and go (but because the quality of your work, both in the medium and the content, I can only think that your channel will continue to grow)

Plays The Thing

You touched on a lot of interesting topics in this one, and I really appreciate your willingness to talk about your frustrations. I think people who say things like "what if they don't want to be political" are not really thinking about it clearly. We live in a political world, it's insane to think that any media could somehow separate itself from that when it *directly* draws on the real world for inspiration. I loved your school shooting analogy, because it cuts straight to the heart of the misrepresentation. Hearing you talk about this, both here and in the original video, as someone who doesn't really understand Italian culture was extremely illuminating for how insensitive a lot of our media can be. Through the course of the episode I began to wonder how much of that insensitivity comes down to race, for both Wizards and myself. For a set like Kamigawa there's a certain hypervigilance-I'm aware, and so is Wizards, of the possibility for insensitivity. But in modern America we consider Italians white, and gangsters white, and so no one bothers to examine the foundations of the tropes they build the world off of because they are so deeply ingrained into the existing white American culture. I would never have considered it might be problematic unless I watched your video. You asked why they don't bother with depth anymore in their worlds. I think it's not that they *need* to be simple to be marketable, I think rather it's that they *don't* need to be complex to be marketable and it's a lot easier to just make simple trope-ish worlds. The Ravnica block drew me in, and so I still go to every prerelease because I'm still hooked. But eventually the lack of depth has a cost, and sometimes I love the set like Kamigawa and sometimes I don't touch it at all afterwards like New Capenna. I think and hope you are right that eventually they will realize the lack of depth has a cost, but we shall see. As for the Double Masters video...I didn't realize until recently that billing had changed from per video to per month. I wonder if some of the people who were upset might not have realized that at all because I could understand maybe feeling a little cross or "double-dipped" so to speak instead of thinking of it as a cool bonus project you got to do courtesy of Wizards. Just a thought, thank you again for these casts and for all the work you bless us with.

The city in a bottle problem is something I’ve had an issue with for the past 4-5 years, having everything feel one note and less diverse because we’re just there for a single set. Amonkhet’s lack of multiple kingdoms and just being a single city co opted by bolas felt like such wasted potential. I played your double masters video a few times in my store and it helped bring the conversation about the set away from money, EV and “value” and back to nostalgia and memories, so thank you for making my magic work days better.

The matter of satire vs parody reminds me of a Revisionist History podcast episode: season 1, final episode (The Satire Paradox). Satire has teeth.Parody has the slapping of the knee. Satire is serious. Parody is silly haha lol omg ftw. Not my insight. I learned this from the podcast. Love, Sam. Love for days. Do your thing.

Drew

That is also a legitimate question: I enjoyed things about this set, but did we gain anything from the flavor in this set? I feel many things I enjoy are hard to reconcile.

Drew

Correct: one can love something for specific reasons (MTG) and be at odds with the same something for other specific reasons (MTG). #WelcomeToTheJungle

I really appreciate both your point of view and the eloquence with which you present your ideas. You deserve to be proud and to feel good about your work, and I hope you continue to do so. Thanks for being awesome.
