The Pip-boy is the oversized thing they wear on their wrists. ("Pip" is an acronym - Personal Information Processor) Vault Boy is the mascot for VaultTec and the Vaults :)

I told you you guys would love this. When The Ghoul said "The wasteland's got it's own golden rule: Thou shall get sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time" that was a reference to always running into side quests in the game and then getting side tracked on them instead of the main quest. The thumbs up guy is called "Vault boy" (or "Vault girl" if you choose a female character). Pip boy is the thing on their arm. It was Gulper. I think. Feral ghouls are like zombies, they have no intelligence and just attack you, while regular ghouls still have full control of their mind and body.

I love that you two are enjoying the series so much! I think you two would love playing through the games and recording your experience if you ever get the chance or ever have time to. I'm sure others have said it, but Fallout 3 is a good starting point if you don't want to play the top-down first two games. Even if Sam is just backseating and not playing herself, it would be fun seeing the reactions to the world and the things that are found in both the games and the series.
