Smooticus

Looks like I know what I'm watching tonight

Backlog Andy M.

Going have to check this out one night 🌙 never seen it. I understand this is Anya taylor-joy's film debut!

Samolina Pilchard

Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? Hope you guys still react to the close runner up

Shehab Dawoud

I’m hyped to watch this! Love hearing that Daniel wants to dive into Eggers’ work. With spooky season right around the corner, I’d love it if a couple of spots have been reserved for The Lighthouse (it is horror mixed with other genres) and Nosferatu. Eggers is an auteur in the truest sense of the word. He loves his period pieces and is meticulous in his research to get the clothing, the locations and the dialects spot on.

The Film Effect

Fuck yes. Possibly, the best horror movie of the last decade.

Chris Bruneau

Well, Dan and Sam, when you said "coming soon" you weren't kidding!!!

Birdie Num Num

there was another witch related movie a few years ago that some of you might enjoy. has some of the same vibes as this film, but not that disturbing. takes place in 1800s. its called "You Won't Be Alone" with Noomi Rapace. Its in Macedonian with subtitles. sort of from the witches perspective. not really straight horror, more a drama with horror elements. heard someone say its like if Terrence Malick directed The Witch:)

Chris

My favorite film, my favorite director and my favorite actress 🙌

Vincent Hollow

I might check that out. Noomi Rapace is incredible.

Vincent Hollow

Been putting off my rewatch so I can join the Schmitts for some good ol' fashioned arts and witchcrafts.

The funniest thing about this movie is that Black Philip (played by Charlie the Goat) was an absolute jerk during filming. So much so that when Ralph Ineson (the father, William) heard that Philip was getting more recognition from the movie than him, he said "Really?! That asshole?!" 🤣 Guess it's no surprise they retired Charlie after this.

I felt like the whole movie was an audition/recruitment for Tommasin to become a witch. I read that Witches use babies blood to rub on their brooms to make them fly.

The Northman is awesome, you guys gotta check it out, haven't yet seen The Lighthouse or Nosferatu. This one I do enjoy, mostly for it's aesthetic and vibe, it does feel like a folktale, and you mentioned the acting but I also loved the dialogue, that, don't know if it's 17th or 18th century English, but again it gave it such a unique folktale vibe. And just the perfect set up being a family alone on the frontier of an alien land basically, coming from a place, England, that's mostly settled, to a place that seems wild and from their mindset inherently wicked, and then it kind of is, in that it's apparently infested with witches lol. But if you've ever been alone in the woods but felt like you actually weren't at all alone, that's an interesting feeling and not pleasant. And the trope of the family falling apart, unlike say the family in Poltergeist, because that's a common religious trope as well, the devil or whatever as a manipulative force that turns people against each other. Well made horror movie, looking forward to more Robert Eggers.

Julian San

This is one of those movies where it doesn’t even feel like you’re watching a movie. It’s like you’re actually there, in that time and setting.

David Martin

Unfortunately, you stopped the credit roll before some explanations were displayed.

PIG

Came to write exactly that! The director notes at the end: “This film was inspired by many folktales, fairy tales, and written accounts of historical witchcraft, including journals, diaries, and court records. Much of the dialogue comes directly from these period sources.”

PIG

It's incredible. Really unnerving. Did I say this movie is incredible?

TBR Schmitt

I think Daniel just chopped it at the end of this video, but we did see that! -Sam

PIG

I think I might agree. That's how good it is to me.

TBR Schmitt

We definitely want to check out more of his works! Is The Lighthouse a horror film?! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Hahahah no way! He was just method acting! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh that makes sense! And also that gave the shivers 🥴 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely excited for more Eggers! One of the most unique vibes for a horror movie! -Sam

Aaron Barlow

This film is so creepy because of the feel of historical authenticity.

penoyer79

they actually had that goat trained to exhibit more bizzare/unsettling behavior but it didn't make it into the film.

penoyer79

i couldnt get into the northman. Noferatu is pretty cool. and The Lighthouse is one of the most unique movies i've seen in the last 25 years. it gave me respect for Robert Pattinson as an actor.

Aaron Barlow

I have to admit if I ran into that witch in the wood in her youthful form I would be a goner. I would run straight into her open mouth kiss trap lol. I would fall victim to any pair of lips she threw at me.

Aaron Barlow

Sam looked SO uncomfortable throughout this movie LOL.

Shehab Dawoud

Partially yes. But again, it’s tough to describe it as a genre film because it combines so many things. But late September or early October is a perfect time to watch it.

OddThomas

Now you should watch The Village, by M. Night Shyamalan

Mike Milligan

This was not a great first date movie, but it certainly stuck with me

OddThomas

The Northman is my favourite Eggers movie

Brad P

I watched the cast interviews on the Second Sight 4K release after watching the movie last night. Ralph Ineson said that the goat sent him to a local hospital three times and, by the third visit, the receptionist simply greeted him with "The goat again?".

Brad P

If you plan on watching Eggers' Nosferatu, it might make sense to also watch the original 1922 silent film first (the 1979 Werner Herzog remake with Klaus Kinski is also great). It would also work as good preparation if you ever watch Shadow of the Vampire, which details the making of the 1922 film with, shall we say, certain liberties taken.

Vincent Hollow

Yeah, I think he had three broken ribs at one point, if I remember.

Michael SCH

I did a watch-along with your reaction and despite watching the movie before, I still get the same chills and tension as if it was my first time. If you do watch Eggers' other films, I'd suggest Nosferatu first as it's probably a good companion piece to The Witch (plus there're little hints of Eggers' homage to The Witch itself - such as when Aaron Taylor Johnson mimics a goat). The Norsemen is of course terrific. The Lighthouse is an acquired taste, though, and hard to get into - possibly the least approachable of his films (even if it has a lot of farting in it!).

Sebastian Syrinx

yeah Eggers is an absolute master when it comes to atmosphere and immersion

Steve Mercier

Looooooooooooove this movie. It's so simple, but so evocative, and works like a slow noose tightening around your comfort-level, and your neck. Good shit.

TBR Schmitt

So creepy!! Gave me the creeps the entire time 😂 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Kid actors in horror movies must be both terrifying and a lot of fun! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Unfortunately, we’ve both already seen The Village! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

It’s so effective!! We definitely look forward to watching more of his films! -Sam

David Wilkins

Just got around to watching your fine reaction. This is certainly an “effective” film. I think it’s a Horror masterpiece. It’s very basic and pared down, which has been the key to so many great efforts. The accuracy of the time and place — the hard lifestyle, the sets and costumes, are characters in themselves. Not in the least a “comfort” experience, but magnificent in its own way.

IzzyB33

Definitely check out Nosferatu and The Northman. The Lighthouse is very existential and a little hard to digest as an earlier Robert E film. I think it is great, but I would probably put it last on your list for his filmography once you get a real feel for how he tells stories.

Davida4

This movie is fantastic. It really puts you into the mindset that led to the Salem Witch Trials and gives you some sense of how that world was. I read a book about the puritans last year, and I was surprised to come across the last lines of the brother, on the sick bed, right before he dies. Those were actually the actual last words of a puritan preacher. Blew my mind
