Only ever seen bits and pieces. My wife loves ❤️ it.

It was my introduction to the character so I don't have the bias to the comic. First thing I said was, "Supernatural Batman!"

Ellie Williams

- Keanu as a great John John Constantine John Wick Johnny Utah Johnny Silverhand (Cyberpunk 2077) - Keanu as an ok John Johnny Mnemonic Jonathan Harker (Bram Stoker's Dracula)

Aaron Barlow

Your jumpscare reactions were hilarious.

I think the scariest part of the movie for Dan was the spider under the glass when she released it and he doesn't know where it went. I'm right there with you Dan! 😂

Steve Mercier

Despite the fact that this adaptation has little to do with the source material, which I love, I very much enjoy this movie. It brings in the film noir flavor pretty hard, and it just works. And, of course, Rachel Weisz...two Rachel Weiszes! Wet Rachel Weisz. Demonically possessed Rachel Weisz. Okay...this got weird.

OddThomas

For more Keanu I recommend Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

OddThomas

For spooky season: The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Innkeepers, Malignant. For more Rachel Weisz: The Fountain, Oz the Great and Powerful

Been a long time since I watched this. It's a fun one that could probably be 30 minutes shorter. I should continue reading Hellblazer and maybe check out the television series.

Going to be a little out of order on Patreon with the upcoming poll winners since we’re so ahead of YT right now! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

😂 I can bet you he’s still thinking about that! Spiders and demons together -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh interesting! I love that they were able to make it different but still enjoyable for those familiar with the source material! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendations! -Sam

I could see that, but we enjoyed the ride! -Sam

Great movie and great reaction, as always! thank you! The "neutral area" concept is not Constantine's and not John Wick's stories trademark - first time I saw it in 1989's Brotherhood of the Rose, as a shared refuge for intelligence agencies across the world - CIA, KGB, Mossad etc, and wa introduced by David Morell, the book author.

Anthony Perez

Cool beans....David Morrell is the author of FIRST BLOOD...the first in the RAMBO series

Love your reaction, also psyched you liked it, it's personally my favorite Keanu Reeves role, and I'm also really looking forward to a sequel (but I've been waiting for a Goonies sequel and who even knows?). This movie I think was vastly underrated at the time but has deservedly become a cult classic, and I have to wonder, IF, they do make a sequel, will we see any reprised roles, Gabriel, Chas, Midnite??? That would be awesome. This movie also reminds me of a couple of others like The Prophecy, the one with Chris Walken, not the other one, although I've heard that's a classic horror film too. But The Prophecy, it's not quite as fun as this one but it has it's humorous moments, and it's just great (you'll love some of the cameos). And The Devil's Advocate, fun fan fiction theory, Keanu's characters in this and Devil's Advocate are connected, maybe it's bullshit, idk, I haven't seen that one in a long time but it's interesting. If you haven't seen either of those movies, The Prophecy (Walken) or The Devil's Advocate, I highly recommend both, not exactly horror, kind of, but I can see them fitting in with Spooky Season. Also this is definitely one of those movies it's fun to rewatch, especially because when you watch those scenes with Chas towards the climax knowing what he actually is, when all of a sudden his knowledge goes beyond books (I can't recall the line, something like "you're right John, it's nothing like the books." But realizing he fully knows that, and did beforehand), and then he comes in clutch. Such a cool movie, really hoping there is a sequel. Also really loved the A Perfect Circle song "Passive" that came out with this movie's release. Great song and video.

I have very little first hand experience with the comic book version of Constantine. I read up on him and he appeared in a very memorable early issue of The Sandman comic book but apart from that my knowledge is more academic. He was created by artists Steve Bissette, John Totleben and writer Alan Moore as a supporting character for a story arc in the comic "Swamp Thing" in 1985. The character became popular and was given his own book "Hellblazer" in 1988 (originally intended to be called "Hellraiser" but the movie of the same name came out right before it) which I've wanted for years to read but it's a massive saga. It ended in 2013 with issue 300 and I don't really want to shell the money for 26 trade paperback volumes. It's a very British series and Constantine comes from Liverpool and his appearance was based on the singer Sting. His name also rhymes with "line" not "lean". So the movie beyond the premise of a cynical occult detective facing supernatural threat as very little to do with the book. It loosely adapts one particular arc of the comic and really emphasises Catholicism where the books deals with a whole spectrum of religions, beliefs and deities. Constantine damned his soul by accidentially sending and innocent girl in hell, not by killing himself. He's also very bisexual. Michelle Monaghan's role was bigger but it was cut in editing to a couple of close ups in the final film. She was Constantine's lover. At the time she was an up-and-coming actress, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang came out the same year and that was her first leading role.

Awesome movie (even despite it's differences from the source material) that ended up over time growing its fandom instead of getting it right out the gate; modern Marvel and DC movies only wish they could be this good! If you're interested in seeing more of live-action John Constantine, there is one season of a 2014 TV show they did with him, that is fairly faithful to the character (Matt Ryan plays him closer to source than Keanu did, but both still kill it in the role), EXCEPT for one major aspect: he's not constantly chain-smoking. And how about that performance by Peter Stormare as Lucifer; probably my favorite ever of the devil. Interesting note on this: the tv show Lucifer is based on the same Hellblazer comic world (Lucifer is played by the incredibly charming Tom Ellis). It has a lot of standard police procedural storytelling, but they do also weave in a lot of the greater "heaven/hell" worldbuilding, and funnily enough you do get to see that Lucifer meet up again with John Constantine (albeit this happens in an entirely separate show, but is still a treat to experience since the different actors have fun with it).

Imagine if the Jesus picture from "Carrie" was in this. XD Such a classic film!

I remember watching this in theaters when I returned home from finishing not only my tour in Iraq, but my active duty term for the military. I had no prior knowledge of the source material until I began to look it up after viewing the movie. The graphic novels by DC Vertigo are worth checking out if y'all get the chance. His struggle with cancer is also a subplot of one of the comic series.

The Devis advocate with Keanu and Pacino would fit right after this reaction lol

I love the TV series, and even have my Blu-Ray signed by Matt Ryan 😁You always hear how Keanu is such a nice guy, well Matt is as well!

Stuart Brewster

There are some great videos out there on YouTube that break down a few things that you may not catch normally - Like the fact that John very rarely gves an answer to any questions thrown his way. Without Keanu in the lead role, I think he could have been an extremely unlikeable character 😅

Wonderful reaction guys. I always enjoyed this movie. Just to clarify, Christ did die as a result of the crucifixion. The Roman soldier pierced His side to confirm that He was indeed deceased. The blood and water that fell from Jesus’s body splashed upon the face of the centurion. Longinus was subsequently healed of his nearly total blindness immediately after coming in contact with Christ’s blood. He then became a disciple of Christ and eventually a saint.

Some Dungeons and Dragons players have an expression, "Lawful Good dosent mean Lawful Nice" Referring to Gabriel's attitude and temperament

Of course rain can be blessed Daniel! They bless the rains in Africa. That's why there aren't any vampires in Africa. So the Spear of Destiny is a legend similar to the holy grail but it is not recognized as something that exists by the Vatican. So take FWIW because it might be a whole giant cover up ;) heh. I have to say I much prefer Matt Ryan's John Constantine in the Arrowverse. The story here is quite similar with Gabriel and Papa Midnight, but I much prefer the storyline in Arrowverse. The Constantine show itself I consider to be the weakest of the "watchable" shows in the Arroverse, which IMO are: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Superman and Lois. I couldn't watch Vixen, Black Lightening, or some of the other ones which seems like they didn't get anywhere near the production value or storytelling value as the others. Most only had one season, including Constantine, which I liked but it was significantly weaker than the big shows I mentioned. The best of John Constantine's storylines are in Legends of Tomorrow and there's also some appearances in Arrow and maybe The Flash? I can't remember. And what I love about the Arrowverse is they have massive crossovers that happen where all the different superheroes are in one episode, usually multiple parts. I absolutely love that. Smallville had one episode that was like this and I was like WHOA.. I NEED MORE OF THIS.. but sadly there was no more of it in Smallville. And the way they do it, they split the parts among the different shows, and there's a reason for why part 1 is on Flash, part 2 is on Arrow, etc. It's really cool. If you want to explore DC this DC universe is really good IMO and Arrow is one of my all time favorite shows. Stephen Amel is super inspirational for me in terms of archery, parkour, and escrima/kali (Filipino Martial Arts), and there's some mentions of Wing Chun by Sarah Lance though I have not seen any evidence of it other than the use of wooden dummies for some unorthodox things! (You don't typically use wooden dummies as targets for escrima sticks) But as with most universes (think Marvel Cinematic Universe) these shows have to be watched in a specific order and the episodes intertwined.. There's a good website that shows it but 5+ seasons of like 3 different shows. I don't imagine I'll see it on any reaction channel that isn't already doing it for a long time with everything that's out to watch.
