Teriffic movie. may take a short pause from horror month to watch the full length reaction

Paul Cox

Didn't want to put a damper on this whole thing until now, after you did your reaction, but at the end of his life (including during the making of The Straight Story), Richard Farnsworth's body was consumed with cancer and rather than endure a drawn out painful death and be an overwhelming burden for his family, he made the decision to die by suicide in 2000 at the age of 80. If you ever rewatch the film with that in the back of your mind, everything he does in this feels like a goodbye.

One movie for Sissy Spacek that I would recommend -- even though it may essentially be the inverse of this in terms of being a very heavy, emotionally tough, dramatic movie -- is the incredible true story drama Missing (1982) by director Costa-Gavras. One of those movies you almost can't believe even got made because it feels like it so honestly and harshly shines a spotlight on the events that it depicts. Spacek has known Lynch for her entire career. She helped to finance Eraserhead, because her husband, art director Jack Fisk, was a childhood friend of Lynch's. He appears in Eraserhead in a small role, and she is thanked during the credits. Speaking of true stories, The Straight Story is also a true story. Alvin Straight was a real person and really did ride his lawnmower 250 miles to see his brother in 1994. The house shown in the film was his real house and the neighbors were his real neighbors. I have no idea how accurate the movie is, but in this case I don't think it matters that much. Farnsworth was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance and was the oldest nominee in history in that category, a record he held for 21 years, until Christopher Plummer was nominated at 88 for 2011's Beginners. Here's hoping Lost Highway or Wild a Heart is up next on your David Lynch journey, and that someday you get to the entire "Twin Peaks" saga. Don't forget, you cannot watch the Twin Peaks movie first. There is only one order: Seasons 1 and 2 of the show, the movie, and then the 2017 revival series.

Missing (1982) definitely deserves a reaction.

Paul Cox

Missing, Coal Miner's Daughter, and Badlands are three most key (imo) Sissy Spacek roles that still necessitate reactions for the channel.

This film is like what Blue Velvet would be if we didn't take that deep look into the grass to find bugs.

Marcus Cato

My first time watching a reaction video to a film I hadn't seen before. Definitely lived up to its reputation and then some.

Anthony Perez

great reaction video. Quiet little movie that I knew Sam would like. Now PLEASE PLEASE react to another great movie along the same vein. Quiet, no car chases, explosions, no nudity...just great story great acting...Robert Duvall and Tess Harper (?) ( Tommy Lee Jones wife in No Country for Old Men) the movie is TENDER MERCIES. PLEASE>>>if you don't I will send Mr Schmidt a box of spiders.

I still can't believe David Lynch made a movie that was Rated G. One of the only non-animated, non-kids movies Rated G? No Parental Guidance needed! The great really Lynchian moment was the woman who hits a deer every week. That feels like something he personally heard about. It's nice to see a movie with kind people.

Surprised to see you suggest Missing, Paul since you only stream(and its not streaming anywhere). But let's be real it would have very little chance in any poll here anyway. Saw Costa Gavras speak after a screening of it earlier this year.

Badlands finished close to last place in a crime film poll from last year

Paul Cox

lol I lived a whole lot of life before streaming became the norm. I built up a pretty big vhs collection when Mom and Pop video stores in my town were all going out of business in the 90s (all long gone now, of course).

Can't Believe that Daniel don't Remember Farnsworth in Misery :) Great Reaction Guys, Such a nice Film and very Different to the Rest of Lynch .... I recommend Easy Rider (1969) - The Mother of a Road Movie with Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda !!! Papillon (Steve Mcqueen, Dustin Hoffman) and The Outlaw Josey Wales (Clint) are Great Films he is in (Smaller Rolls) but both are Classics

My mum brought me to see this movie as a child. It was for a movie night in the park. It was on a double bill with the kid's movie Cats and Dogs. Now that's two movies that have nothing to do with each other beyond being G-rated. Even as a kid I was absorbed. My love of movies was so big that I could really watch pretty much anything. Some shots lingered in my memory for years. I rewatched it for the first time, alongside my mother last year. By then, we had watched Twin Peaks together and I had seen all but a couple of David Lynch's films. All those quirky characters, those shots of farmland and smalltown life, those emotional moments and that Angelo Badalamenti score are all hallmark Lynch. This was the last film shot by the great English cinematographer/director Freddie Francis. His 3rd collaboration with Lynch after Elephant Man and Dune. The movie was co-written by Lynch's longtime collaborator Mary Sweeney (based on the true story of Alvin Straight). She worked first as an assistant editor on Blue Velvet before moving to editor for the Twin Peaks film and editing all of his films until Mulholland Drive. Her last work with him was as a producer on Lynch's last film Inland Empire (2006). They were a couple for about 15 years and had a son together before separating in 2006. The Straight Story was her only writing credit on a Lynch film. The Olsen twins in the film are played by Chris Farley's brothers John and Kevin. PS: You were confused in the spin wheel as to what a Road movie is. It's simply a story about being on the road. Those movies are often more episodic in nature and feature the protagonists finding themselves in some way as they make different encounters on the road. Rain Man, Thelma and Louise and even Planes, Trains and Automobiles are all Road movies.

What a great post and neat way into Lynch’s work.

I’ll add Coal Miner’s Daughter to that too.

TBR Schmitt

Aww yay!! So glad you enjoyed it for the first time with us, Marcus!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Wait I missed this was rated G but that’s hilarious! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can’t either!! He was the MVP! Thanks for the recommendations! -Sam

The only reason I didn't list Coal Miner's Daughter is because I haven't seen it yet! I meant to watch it with Ashleigh Burton but haven't gotten around to it yet, although I recently got it on 4K UHD!

TBR Schmitt

I love this comment so much!! Love that you and your mom were able to watch this again together! I’m sure it brought great memories for her as well! -Sam

One Sissy Spacek movie I would recommend is In the Bedroom from 2001, it was my introduction to her, and I’ve been a fan ever since

David Wilkins

YES, a terribly under-appreciated movie. I’ll add it to my list for use in the monthly drawing. Another great one from her is Badlands (1973). One of the earliest appearances from both her and Martin Sheen.

A very enjoyable watch seeing this for the first time ,a sweet little movie ,it reminded me of ''The World's Fastest Indian (2005)'' a similar feel
