Severance Season 2 Episode 10 'Cold Harbor' Full TV Reaction!!

Comments

Dan

I understand why innie Mark chose to be with Helly. As far as they know, they only have minutes (maybe seconds) left to live. They're in love, and they want to be together (and alive) as long as possible. I would too. (If you and your spouse were about to be executed in front of a firing squad, you'd want those last few moments to last as long as possible, right?) And them being together for a couple more minutes isn't going to preclude outie Mark from being reunited with Gemma. That will happen anyway. The most common reaction I've seen from reactors to the ending of this episode is "What's the plan!!!???" Mark and Helly don't have a plan, they're just trying to stay together as long as possible before Helly is inevitably switched back to Helena Eagen, and innie Mark is fired and turned back into outie Mark again. Can't imagine what season 3 is going to be like. I'm afraid it will go off the rails and be like season 3 of Westworld where they took the show away from it's original setting on Westworld and the plot became too convoluted to follow. So, wacko me wants season 3 to be only one episode long, and Mark, Helly R and Gemma all live in a specially adapted birthing cottage where half the time innie Mark lives with Helly and half the time, outtie Mark lives with Gemma. lol

One storyline that could be mind blowing (and something I mentioned on another Patreon site), is what would happen if Helly/Helena had become pregnant from "their " time(s) with Marc, especially if one wanted to keep the baby and the other didn't. I imagine Helena would have the final say. We already have stories of innies having babies so that the outies don't have to go through the pain of child birth. I'm not sure if that's too heavy of a direction for the writers to go to, but it would be interesting.

My guess for next season is, that we will see the real Macrodata Uprising. Remember, there is a full marching band and countless other innies down there. They have 3d printers in O&D and we know for a fact that they can print weapons (at least hatches) and Helly and Mark are the leaders of the uprising. But as Mark has started the reintegration he will switch between Innie and Outie all the time and the Outie will want to leave, but the Innie will not, so Mark has to fight literally against himself. Iriving will hear about the uprising and return into Kier and hopefully will finally have something meaningful to do by supporting the uprising from outside. Meanwhile, Gemma and Harmony will have some nice cup of coffee in the birthing cabin while they wait for Mark.

I really loved this episode, but the ending is really upsetting. When I first saw it, I could have sworn that Helly gave Gemma a gloating look when Mark "chose her" and I was convinced that Lumon had flipped some switch and Helly was really Helena again just at the very end in the hallway. Mostly because of the gloating look and that I seriously thought Helly would force Mark to go to Gemma because she really loves him and would want to do what is best for him. BUT, I saw an interview with Brit Lower where she swore that it was really Helly at the end, and I also saw another interview with the producers where they said they wouldn't do the switcheroo and trick the audience again since the Helly/Helena trick would only work once. Then, upon this rewatch with you, I didn't see the "gloating look" from Helly to Gemma, it must have been a figment of my imagination/paranoia. I want to see a spinoff show for Dylan and Gretchen, and maybe one on the Mammalians Nurturable department starring Gwendoline Christie.

I always wonder if Helly at the end was actually Helena. That look she gives Gemma at the end was kinda weird.

I agree with most of your ideas, but I foresee that Harmony will have an active role in the "I'm the actual genius behind severance" vein. I think that she could throw a real wrench (do you know about throwing wrenches? Hands in pies?) in the Eagan's cult if she can take down Jame a peg or two.

Remember Drummond’s words when he’s about to kill the goat when he talks about Kier’s “eternal war against pain”. That is his “grand agendum” as animatronic Kier put it. That’s why each room is a different thing that could cause pain, trauma, and annoyance. Whether it’s going to the dentist, plane turbulence, or the trauma of not being able to have a baby. The goal of severance is to sell it to the public so that people can avoid pain whenever they need to by activating their severed chip. That’s why Lumon started originally as an ether factory-because ether is used to anesthetize pain. That’s part of why all the people at Salt’s Neck are huffing it. For whatever reason, Kier was motivated to eliminate pain from the human experience and that has led the company to where it is now. Now there may be more to the “grand agendum” than that but that’s certainly a big part of it.

I agree with another commenter that we may find out that Helly/Helena is pregnant next season. Since each had sex with Mark, who would the baby belong to? That would explain the baby Kier at the end of the season two intro. Another nod to this being the case is the scene in the after hours episode where Helena is eating the egg. She sits it on the plate and slices it. First splitting it in two then into multiple pieces, just as a human egg divides into two then multiple. She spreads the two halves apart revealing the young boy on the plate underneath and the two women who look alike are on either side pulling at him. I think this is saying that Helly/Helena is pregnant and they are going to be fighting over the baby. Perhaps..wild theory but I think there’s something to that scene. This show wouldn’t have a scene like that and have it mean nothing.

I understand everyone's frustration with the ending, but my take is that Mark's decision to run off with Helly is the two doomed lovers, there is no win here, there is no happily ever after, but they chose to at least have a few minutes more together in the face of absolute doom. Very poetic, taking and stealing just a few moments more together. There is no plan, there is no escape, just these moments left to them, running in a hallway

Am I the only one who wants a "Sam watches GoT" reaction now?

MarisoL

Helly wouldn't make the choice for Mark like push him out to his "death". If they are going to die they would rather die together rather than with a woman he doesn't really know. I do hope Gemma gets away. And that we get answers on her dissapearance. Drummond's death great! ✌️

MarisoL

I just think Helly doesn't trust or think highly of outies.

TBR Schmitt

Can't believe we have to wait for the next season now!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL! Wishful thinking with that Season 3! The more I've sat on it, the more I understand with Innie Mark, especially since he doesn't know much else other than his life with Helly, but it was definitely frustrating! I'm excited for Season 3! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh man!! I hadn't thought of that! Even though I feel like Helena might now have as much power as Helly is about to after that conversation with her dad! -Sam

I've so enjoyed your reactions to this show. Despite this finale ending, it's been an awesome couple of seasons, and a great ride to watch it again through your eyes. I'm not the best at following complex plots so it was nice to see you spot things that I'd missed the first time around. I had the exact same immediate feelings towards this finale as you guys. Like, what IS their plan? It would've worked if it was a show finale. Now I just kind feel like they don't really know where they're going with the show. I'll be back for S3. 😂 FWIW, for a second, the way Helly was pushing Mark to complete Cold Harbor, and then how she just showed up right as he was about to leave, made me wonder if it was actually Helena. 🤦‍♂️ I don't think so now, but that ending was so unlikely to me that I think I was just trying to somehow make it make more sense. Like you said, in so many ways it does make sense, as far as their desperation goes, but what's the play now?🤷‍♂️ Sam, you need to watch Game of Thrones! 😂 I don't know if Daniel would want to watch it again for reactions, but you at least need to see it. I put it off for so long; it just didn't interest me. One Sunday I was super bored and tried the first episode - I watched the next 4 back to back, lol.

TBR Schmitt

Ooh! I like your theories! I figured they didn't have much time left there but it would make the most sense for them to have that time! I was wondering if the marching band were innies too, but from Helly's speech, I think they were too? Gemma and Harmony just waiting it out is hilarious haha I do agree with Kevin, that Harmony is going to have to have a much larger role, but I don't know if she can be fully trusted against Lumon, it's so ingrained in her! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh that would have been interesting though, if it was Helena! I was definitely shocked by the ending! Interesting that Brit confirmed that, meaning multiple people thought the same thing as you! I love that you got something different upon a rewatch though! Something psychologically make us think things! hahaha I love those spinoff ideas! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Similar to Jen below! Sounds like Brit confirmed it but I hadn't even thought of that! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ah good point with the ether too! But making a whole personality just continue to suffer is insane!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That would be absolutely insane!! Especially considering his child loss with Gemma, so traumatic! I mean, you're really making me think this through though! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I guesssssss! The more I sit on it, the more I get it, but I still don't like it haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Maybe one day!! How do we feel about a whole series like that?! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I mean, I guess I hadn't thought about it like that! I just imagined them already knowing that was the end for them and after everything Gemma had been through but there really is no right answer on this one! They're all different people! -Sam

Cat with a Hairpiece

I'm wondering just how much significance there was to the conversation between Helly and her "father" wherein he expresses that he sees Kier in her and not in Helena. Maybe she'll be able to leverage that to keep Mark and herself alive.

MarisoL

Smart on them not doing the switcheroo twice. I wouldn't have liked it, It would be hard for the audience to trust her character.

ChopSockey

They also did not know if they were picked up for a third season (even after the success, it took a long time to confirm season 3), so if you look at it in this context, they did write a really perfect ambiguous ending. Mark S does save Gemma and for the moment, he does get to live and be with Helly R

Paul Patine

I didn't care for the ending either. I felt that there was a chance to get something resolved, and then that chance was passed up.

My new name (he/him)

It’s funny that you mention uploading a consciousness into Gemma because a Netflix show based on that very idea and it stars the actress for Gemma, Dichen Lachman. It’s called Altered Carbon and you guys might like it.
