Comments

Backlog Andy M.

Cool. Not watched this one in years. I love the easter egg. Astronauts lost in space on the paper!

Duncan

Super excited for this franchise on the channel ,was blown away with this movie the first time I watched it ,so looking forward to checking out this reaction in the coming days🐒🦧

Vincent Hollow

I don't keep up with celebrity news or gossip or anything like that, but this is the last movie I saw with James Franco before he kinda fell out of the public eye. I don't really care what his story is because it's none of my business, but it is just something I realized on my last watch of Rise.

Backlog Andy M.

He has been cast as the bad guy in the Rambo prequel!

Vincent Hollow

I didn't even know they made a prequel, so that's news to me

If I could, I recommend at least rewatching your YT edit of the original because there are more references to it in the following films. I also recommend watching the 4th film, Kingdom. It is very good and there are 2 more on the way from what I understand. Also, I don't know if you watched it off-camera, but there was a post-credit scene in this that explains a big part of the next film.

Steve Mercier

These movies!!! Andy Serkis at his best (which...is saying a lot). Good shit!

Wormtongue

Looks like they missed/skipped the post credit scene.

Bill the CAT

Awesome reaction! Though you missed a really important credits sequence. I always wondered why they did it that way instead of showing it during the movie.

Hans Engelen

you missed the post credit scene

Gabriel Moraes

Thanks for the reaction! I was wondering which of the Cloverfield movies have you guys already watched, since it was mentioned in the intro... ☺️

Think it’s about how and where it would’ve been included. Would’ve felt a bit weird to see it in the middle while the apes are breaking out. And the official ending where Caesar is up in the tree looking out is perfect. So a credit scene was the best choice.

fromage

I would say that the post credits scene is key for context at the time of this film's original release, but the next two sequels (especially the 3rd film in the trilogy) go deep into the lore regarding what happens to humans and these films are all released and readily available now, so if you're planning to watch the sequels, this post credits scene isn't super important. Hint: viruses spread fast!

Robert Durant

I’m sure they went back and watched it after seeing our comments.

Duncan

they will probably watch it on camera just before starting the 2nd movie

James Miley

I recommend Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I thought that it did a very good job of continuing the story and also standing on its own. It's set long after the Caesar trilogy and continues the build towards what we see in the original Planet of the Apes.

Dan Holmes

Great reaction to a great film. Saw this in theaters, never in my life heard more silence followed by genuine gasps after the "No!" line.

MacGuffinStuff

Love these movies! Well, the three, I can't tell you about the fourth because I did fall asleep, but I might have been tired that day I don't remember and wouldn't be the first time I literally slept on an underrated movie. But this one was especially great for me because I love apes, terrified of them of course, but love them still, and the concept of beginning with Caesar... Okay, I can't remember which movie it was from the OG plethora, but in one they establish that it was Caesar who started the rebellion, a slave rebellion btw, by speaking the first word, "NO". That scene in this movie also gives me the chills, still. So awesome. One little detail, can't help it, why didn't that hose that leaked the virus even have a 75¢ hose clamp on it, duct tape? The post credits ... Could have all been avoided with duct tape. 🤣

F**kin' Malfoy! 😂

Backlog Andy M.

Its been filmed now. About Rambo in vietnam and his team.

TBR Schmitt

I believe we’ve seen the original and 10 Cloverfield Lane! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We’ll definitely watch it before the next installment! -Sam

PIB (Cassie) did all the monkey movies last year, it was a painful time for me...lol.

Joe J

He be in the dog house. He admitted to having sex with women enrolled in his acting school, but denied any coercion was involved. He had to settle a big civil lawsuit. He's making a slow comeback.

Red

Got to catch the credit scene it leads off to next part

Clarifying a couple of things: Daniel's understanding of the original series is way out of proportion. There are only five original Planet of the Apes films: Planet of the Apes (1968), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), and Battle For the Planet of the Apes (1973), as well as a TV show. I'll mention again that I recommend skipping Beneath, #2, and Battle, #5 (as well as watching the slightly extended Conquest that restores its original ending). Between the two of them, I'd guess you'd get more people arguing for 2 than 5 but I still think it's unnecessary (and lopping out these two deletes one of the goofier subplots of the original Apes films, which is not referenced in the other three movies, but I won't say what it is in case you do go back). Then there were no Apes until the unfortunate Mark Wahlberg remake in 2001 (directed by Tim Burton), and now the four newer Apes movies. So, if your hesitation on watching more of the older films was based on length, I think you're getting Apes confused with Godzilla (a franchise that spans 38 films so far). These new Apes movies contain references to the original series, but they are *not* prequels to the originals. It's true that the rocket stuff in this movie is a reference (as well as a clip of Charlton Heston in whatever movie the one nice habitat employee is watching), but this is a fresh take on the Apes storyline that kicks off in 2011. (Conquest goes into some of the OG version of this backstory.) A couple of references you missed: "Bright Eyes" is also the nickname that Zira (Kim Hunter), the ape doctor who first realizes that humans can be intelligent, gives to Taylor (Charlton Heston) in the original film. Also, earlier on in the film. Tom Felton's character also yells one of Taylor's lines after riling up the apes: "It's a madhouse! A madhouse!" You did catch the Statue of Liberty nod, though, as well as the most obvious "stinking paws/damn dirty apes!" homage. Although it's worth watching the post-credits version of the information that you missed this time through, the next movie opens with basically the same sequence. It's different, but it conveys the same information in almost the same way. Also, while the movies have nothing to do with each other (aside from both being 20th Century Fox), one of the movies you can see playing on the televisions (right after Caesar enlists Rocket to hand out cookies) is the great sequel French Connection II (1975). Although there are reasons it's ridiculous (which I would only explain after the movie), it's a great film and features another Oscar-worthy Gene Hackman performance. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in continuity with the trilogy you are watching, but they are focused on separate stories. At the time Kingdom came out, it was being touted as the beginning of a new trilogy. However, just a couple of weeks ago, development on a new Planet of the Apes film was announced, and it is not a sequel to Kingdom. I heard that development on a Kingdom sequel is continuing separately from the new film, but I don't know if that's confirmed or not. (Personally, I'd have liked to see where they went with a Kingdom trilogy.)

Novelist Andrew Gaska was once asked by 20th Century Studios between 2015-2018, to help create a chronology / canon / bible for POTA. It incorporates all the classic movies, TV show, animated series, comics, novels and video games released over the last five decades. Basically trying to find a way to make everything fit into a cohesive timeline, and toss out any contradictory elements. Do note that he used this timeline to write and publish his own official POTA Tabletop RPG. More info here: https://roguereviewer.wordpress.com/2024/07/03/the-canon-of-the-planet-of-the-apes/ He noted that the rebooted movie series is not part of the 'classic canon' and is not designed to be a prequel to the original films (mainly because it contradicts the classic films). Gaska was also responsible for trying to make sense of the very messy Alien / Aliens / Prometheus / Predator timelines for 20th Century Studios, sorting out what can be considered canon and what are just stories told at the nearest space bar. Your mileage may vary, though. Some folks like the semi-official nature of the timeline; others hate it. I personally found it interesting reading.

I love "Rise.." to get the series started. But I do realize that Franco's character didn't really understand or truly empathize with Caesar. He mainly studied him. It seemed the same way with his father. Like he cared more about the cure being approved to the public and Dad was his guinea pig. He also seemed like a bit of an airhead which isn't a quality you'd want a doctor to have.
