I just love how much this movie plays on a meta level. Like making the movie blue to deliver a frightening moment is just genius. It's like the waking up twice thing, but taken to another level.

RIP Sam Neill

Sam's best jump scare reactions EVER!

Love this one, RIP Sam Neill, he's amazing, especially to me for all the iconic horror movies he was in. I saw this in the theater, I remember leaving the theater totally expecting to walk outside into a hellscape. I was probably still a little stoned because I was in high school and that's what we did haha, but I loved it then and still do. This movie did not do well in theaters (neither did They Live or BTILC or even The Thing) but John Carpenter was always just way ahead of everyone including the audience, took people a while to see the genius. But this is the final movie in the unofficial Carpenter "Apocalypse Trilogy", after The Thing and Prince of Darkness. Just one last thing, Julie Carmen played Styles and she was in one of my favorite little movies, directed by Robert Redford, "The Milagro Beanfield War," it's just such a comfort movie, about opposite of this but also great, surreal as well, but in a more sentimental way. Love that movie.

Oh wait I completely forgot to mention the Lovecraftian aspects of this movie, that was the first thing I wanted to talk about lol. HP Lovecraft and *cosmic horror are huge influences on modern horror, Guillermo Del Toro is a Lovecraft fan too. I'm not an expert or anything but what I get from cosmic horror is the basic concept that humanity is neither special nor safe. This is Lovecraft from "The Call of Cthulhu": "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far." It's very much about the UNKNOWN being what scares us most, and he had this a cold scientific way of describing reality as something humans do not even understand, meanwhile there are these entities and forces in the universe beyond our understanding, older than time, vast, and totally indifferent to our existence. And predatory. That's the Chaos Beyond kind of thing. And they referenced it in True Detective season 1, the Yellow Sign etc., that's a Lovecraftian thing, different author but part of that OG pre-SCP universe. It's just a lot of fun to me. Cloverfield is definitely influenced by that stuff too. The Mist.

You may have looked this up by now but Sutter Cane was played by Jurgen Prochnow who was the captain in Das Boot and the main villain in Beverly Hills Cop 2. In the Mouth of Madness was the third film of what John Carpenter calls his Apocalypse Trilogy following The Thing and Prince of Darkness. There's no narrative connection between the three films but they all deal with the potential end of the world. Prince of Darkness is one of the big Carpenters you still haven't seen along with Assault on Precinct 13, Christine and Starman.

I'm a fan of the movie to the point where I bought the novelization of the movie they just released not too long ago. Naturally it uses the proper cover and Sutter Cane is listed as the author, lol. On a side note: No surprise it's a movie with a horrific supernatural painting and has Vigo the Carpathian in it.

First time watch for me, somehow, as I love John Carpenter. I loved it. It reminded me a bit of the movie Angel Heart (1987). The plots have differences but structurally and thematically there are quite a few similarities. That's another one I'd love a reaction to, haven't seen many.

This is one my favorite Carpenters and one of my favorite Sam Neills. It was great to see you guys delve into it. As Sam said, I think there’s more than one interpretation possible. Mine is Cane’s influence and ability to change the world grows as the movie goes on. John and Linda Styles are real people at the start but by the end they’ve both been written into — and, in Linda’s case, out of — Cane’s story. By the time John gets back to Harglow’s office, the novel In the Mouth of Madness is reality. John doesn’t even feel or see it happen, but he’s still his own man because he hasn’t read the book. But then he sees the movie.

I think I've had as much fun with your John Carpenter reactions as I have with any other director. Amazingly, two of my favourites are still to come! Assault on Precinct 13 would be a great summer watch (hint hint!) and Christine would be a great October watch!

Future Boy

Assault on Precinct 13 might be my favourite Carpenter film. The music, the cinematography, the setting, the incredible (but mostly unknown) cast, the whole vibe. I could easily rewatch it monthly.

Me too!

*hears groaning "That might be the husband getting chopped up." *it is not "Nevermind I dont know what the fuck that is." I fuckin choked. 🤣 Also, I think Sam is gonna have her own Sutter Cane madness with how hard those jumpscares got her, bwahahaha! One of your best reactions guys!

Recommend another Sam Neill movie, Dead Calm (1989), with Nicole Kidman
