Comments

Will Knox

One of my favorite novels and I love a couple different film adaptations! This one is a really great adaptation 💖

Michael SCH

Maybe it's time to react to The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974), as well! Both of which, BTW, are very very funny!

Birdie Num Num

Comedy? you've had this in several drama film polls:)

Athos Count de la Fère

I agree 💯. My screen name is for one of my favorite actors, Oliver Reed who played Athos.

Paul Cox

Is this the first time "so what do you know about this one?" spun off into a whole sideline discussion? Loved that. Easy to get things mixed up when people constantly throw titles at you in youtube comments and patreon replies.

So I watched the entire movie with you guys. Start to finish. I think it’s one of your all time best reactions. The Godfather, Gattaca, Heat are really up there. But this might take #1. The Count of Monte Cristo may be the most satisfying movie of all time? Even on repeat viewings. Sometimes movies get everything right. And it was the reason I so was frustrated that it would always end up #2 on every poll it was on. The silver medal for years! It was trapped in the Chateau D’If until today. TBR WILL GIVE ME JUSTICE! I don’t know if you mentioned it but Luigi the pirate also played Gus Fring’s doctor in both Breaking Bad and Saul. Thank you Sam and Daniel. I just fucking love you guys.

Thank you so much for reacting to "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002)! Years ago, I was out of town visiting a friend and he says, "Wanna watch a good movie?", and pops a disc into his player. I was blown away by how good it was. Polish-American actress Dagmara Dominczyk, who played Mercedes, had a guest appearance on a series starring Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson, called "Person of Interest". Dagmara has been married to Patrick Wilson for over 20 years.

Incredible film. I've seen this at least a dozen times.

Great reaction !!! Saw this one in the cinema ... very underrated at this Time... Kevin Reynolds is a good director ... i recommend "Robin Hood" from 1991 with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman ... Also great films for this Genre are "The Man in the Iron Mask" (1998) and "The Name of the Rose" (1986)

Both "Monte Cristo" and "The Man in the Iron Mask" (as well as "3 Musketeers") novels were written by Alexandre Dumas, which is why they feel from the same setting and period.

Chris Bruneau

Omg!! Didn't know u were going to watch this one, its fantastic!!! ❤️🔥

The book is quite diffrent but if you wanted more of the physiological warfare the book has that in spades. Personally it's my favourite book of all time. You were right about mixing this and the man in the iron mask together as both novels that the respective films are based on a written by the same author Alexander Dumas. ( the man in the iron mask is actually part of the three musketeers series)

Shehab Dawoud

I prefer The Simpsons parody, 'The Count of Monte Fatso'

Even though there's close to 200 years between the settings the novels take place in. Love Dumas he was such a great adventure writer.

Oh I wasn't expecting this lol

I've always found this movie--or at least certain aspects of it--overly melodramatic, and even amateurishly shot (especially in the opening sequence). But goddamn, if this isn't extraordinarily watchable and enjoyable. Guy Pearce, Richard Harris, and Luiz Guzmán steal every scene they can (and J.B. Blanc as the pirate Luigi Vampa), but the whole cast does exactly what they need to. Read the book in high school, and I actually find the Hollywood happy ending here a bit better, as in the novel Edmond winds up with a woman with whom he initially forms a kind of father-daughter bond with--which is kind of icky--and I like that in giving up vengeance he also repairs his relationship with Mercédès. Anyway, glad you guys enjoyed it. Good shit.

I love this movie, glad ya'll enjoyed it. Check out the other film adaptations of Dumas's works in The Three Musketeers (1993) and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998). See a Young Richard Harris in A Man Called Horse (1970).

Hello Sam and Dan! I’m so, so happy you reacted to this movie (even if it was by accident!). Even more so that you enjoyed it as much as you did. It’s one of my very favorite movies and I watch it a few times each year. Alexandre Dumas was a prolific author (plays, poetry, books) primarily in the adventure category. There are a number of film adaptations of his works. “The Three Musketeers” (1973) – Directed by Richard Lester and stars: Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay, Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch, Christopher Lee, Faye Dunaway in what I think is the definitive version of Alexandre Dumas’ Musketeers Saga. The only issue is in order to get the complete story you also have to watch 1974's "The Four Musketeers". Filmed at the same time as "The Three Musketeers" so it is the same cast. A bit darker, not as much humor, but it's still a terrific follow-up. Also, there is another sequel, “Return of the Musketeers” (1989). Again, directed by Richard Lester and starring the same cast of characters. And finally, you mentioned “The Man in the Iron Mask”. My favorite adaptation is the 1998 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, and Gérard Depardieu. If you do decide to go down the rabbit hole of Dumas’ works made into films, I would suggest watching “The Three Musketeers” (1973) and “The Four Musketeers” (1974) before watching this one. Some of the basic plot points in this movie will spoil the drama / tension of the first two. Hope to see you follow up with the Musketeers saga!

Miles E Coburn

He was my favorite character / actor in the Musketeers saga. With a backstory more fleshed out than the others.

Miles E Coburn

For a grittier telling of the Robin Hood saga (without the campiness), Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" (2010) is also a favorite of mine. Stars Russell Crow, Cate Blanchett. Max von Sydow and William Hurt.

Donna Castellano

Even tho it's different from the book in a lot of ways, I still absolutely love this movie. I don't think I've seen one reactor watch this and not come out loving it on the other side. It truly does have it all.

Dan Holmes

I grew up with this film and adore it especially Jim Caviezel as Esmond Desmond 😅 Can't wait for you eventual Passion of the Christ reaction!!!

Dan Holmes

Also Daniel now that you've seen it you need to checkout Cinebinge and Popcorn in Bed's reactions to this film, so good :)

Perfect timing to rewatch this with you guys since I've just finished reading the doorstopper that is the original novel (my edition was 1400 pages long and split in 2 volumes). The melodrama/soap opera aspect of the movie as well as the psych warfare of the Count makes up over half the book as there are dozens of key characters embroiled in their own plots that the Count exploits. The film is highly entertaining but has to cut, combine or alter a lot of the characters and subplots to make it work into 2hrs. For example 2 of my favourite characters in the novel are Danglar's daughter Eugénie and Villefort's father Noirtier (Clarion in the film), She's not in the film at while he's reduced to being killed off while Edmond's in prison (he's a major character in the book). The film has a rather distinctively American flair though, both the movie and the book are very concerned about matters of God, faith and divine retribution, but forgiveness is way more important in the novel. It's more tragic, the movie Edmond kind of has his cake and eats it too. He doesn't see himself as an instrument of divine retribution, then get to suffer guilt for the unintended consequences of his schemes or have to face the darkness in his heart the way the novel Edmond does. In this movie he wins at everything for a proper Hollywood ending. Anyways, always fun to watch a movie "alongside" you guys.

I think y'all have seen seen V for Vendetta. V watches a 1930s version of the count of Monte Cristo, and there's references all around . I guess the themes of revenge are parallel. Evey even calls V "Edmond Dantes"

Ryan Towell

One of my all time favorite films. If you liked Jim I recommend Frequency. He also was great in Sound of Freedom, High Crimes and a couple good supporting roles he did was in Pay it Forward, DejaVu w Denzel. He's done some really good stuff.

Matthew Maxon

This book was mentioned in Shawshank Redemption. When they were sorting books. They wanted to put it as Educational. haha
