Well, I know what I'm doing tomorrow night.

Matt

Went into this with low expectations because I thought it was pretty overhyped but I actually liked it a lot more than I thought, kinda had a David Lynch quality

It took several years for someone to uncover the origins of the original Backrooms photo that appeared on 4chan in 2019 and inspired Kane Parsons to do his YouTube series. In 2024, it was revealed that the picture was from the early 2000s and was of an area in an old furniture store in Oshkosh, Wisconsin that was in the process of being renovated by its new owners. Both of the lead actors are Academy Award nominees: Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave and Renate Reinsve just last year for Sentimental Value.

I really liked this film and enjoyed your insights after watching. A couple things. You guys wondered why Clark's copy was the only violent one and I think you were on the right track. My interpretation is Captain Clark is a warped version of Clark himself and it copies Clark's own flaws and amplifies them. His inadequacies, sadness, and deep-seated anger/violence are carried over, so Captain Clark is murderously violent, but you can also see at certain moments there is a sad look on his face. Mary's trauma is rooted in her childhood isolation. You can see a few times in the movie where she pulls inward into herself when she's overwhelmed -- once at her party where, when she sees the mother and daughter, she sneaks away and has to take drugs to calm down, and then at the end with Phil, she disassociates and starts drifting away, unable to hear Phil speaking. Mary's copy is then seen sitting alone in a room, isolated. Their copies are just warped versions of who they really are in life. I don't think Async created the portals or the Backrooms themselves. I think they just stumbled upon it and found that more "doors" are opening. They're just as lost and confused as the main characters, I think. Personally, I think the Backrooms is a kind of connected or shared purgatory. It remembers each person who just happens to stumble into it, and it reflects their memories, the things that shaped them into who they are, their traumas -- and then reflects them back at themselves, and at anyone else that is unlucky enough to come across it. edit: if you ever get a chance, look into "liminal spaces". It's a type of 'horror' that was born completely in modern times, from the internet. It started when someone on the 4Chan message boards uploaded an photo of a musty yellow room that looked like the backroom (ha!) of a 80s/90s furniture store. The photo was simultaneously creepy, nostalgic, and melancholic, because anyone who was of a certain age vaguely remembers being in a room like it. When the image went more viral, people started sharing similar images of their own "liminal space" -- a space where people used to pass through or inhabit for a time, but now, only exist in memories of a time and place long gone. A friend's living room growing up, an empty playground, an old office, an abandoned shopping mall you used to visit, etc. Places that spark a deep sadness when you think back on it, but just vaguely weird enough to be unsettling. Places that you don't really remember fully anymore, but you feel it. "Backrooms" was very much inspired by this concept and a lot of what you see is an expansion of that original photo through director Kane Parson's unique sensibilities.

I think this movie is getting more weird every time I watch it, which is so cool. It's like some of my weirdest dreams but also, and I bring this up every time, but this is so SCP. Secure, Contain, Protect, you know, that interdimensional Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror thing. Mark Duplass, his character especially, he's studying it, because the SCP, that's what they do. And one of the best things about this kind of horror is it leaves you with questions, and you try not to, but you can't help but wonder, what else is beyond this??

Dave Carmichael

Well there's no chance of that going in my Movies Classic folder!

Glad you guys are interested in the lore of the backrooms. If you did a series of reactions (even just on patreon) to the youtube series by Kane Parsons/Pixels, I would be so down for it.
