Comments

Paul Cox

SUNSHINE hell yessssss

Jonathan Patrick

TIMECOP (1994) Jean-Claude Van Damme His most successful and critically acclaimed film VANILLA SKY (2001) Tom Cruise. Directed by Cameron Crowe

Garry L

Under The Skin & Annihilation are my two recommendations

Ron Moses

You absolutely must see Dark City. Man, what a film. Roger Ebert named it his top film of 1998, and even contributed a commentary track to the DVD. Even if it loses the poll, which it will, check it out on your own time.

Night King01

May I suggest the 2012 Dredd Fantastic Sci Fi action film.

Kero-chan

Gattaca and Her are two of the best films on the list and will probably finish in the bottom 3 of the poll. 😭

Jason S.

Dark City is phenomenal - but so is Sunshine. Dark City has gained a cult following but it blows me away that Sunshine doesn't get more love

TBR Schmitt

Annihilation is on Patreon! It was a Patreon exclusive when we were doing those :) -Sam

Domino

I was just going to say! I'm dying for them to watch Her! 😭

Garry L

Ooh will check that out!

Domino

Come on guys, vote for Her! 😭💞🙌🏼 That being said, here are two sci-fi suggestions. But watch Her first! 🥹 Donnie Darko (2001) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Paul Cox

I've been meaning to watch Dark City for forever. I'll finally do it soon. otoh I've watched Sunshine so many times that I've convinced myself the third act is actually good lol

Paul Cox

I wouldn't have thought of Donnie Darko for the Sci Fi category, but it doesn't really fit anywhere neatly, so Sci Fi it is!

Tyler Foster

I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade who likes it, but it will be flabbergasting to me if Ready Player One wins this against literally every other single movie on the poll.

Paul Cox

"Fan Service: The Movie"

ED209

Yeah, I've had a good time reading the book and watching the film's but it's basically Fifty Shades of Grey for Tv Tropers.

Aaron Barlow

Ready Player One is fantastic!

Godwolf

her is the only, ONLY worthwhile film on that list

Aaron Barlow

Why? It's a great sci fi adventure movie, which means it will probably lose to some modern arty film. Luckily there's no anime here otherwise no decent movie will have a chance.

Paul Cox

I wish Everything Everywhere All At Once had made the ballot this time. Still hoping to see it pop up on the channel before awards season is in full swing.

Marcus Laubner

Guys, which version of Dark City do you prefer? While I enjoy the new scenes in the Director's Cut, I still prefer the Theatrical version.

Jim Frykman

100% I put my vote on Gattaca but that one would have gotten my vote over it.

Ornery

I totally agree with Ron. Once you watch Dark City, you will see how much influence it had on films that followed it

Tyler Foster

All I can say is that you and I have very different taste.

Ornery

For the intersection of sci-fi and foreign language, check out Sputnik.

Shehab Dawoud

Some of these films aren't straight up Sci-Fi but I've seen them partially categorized as such so I'll include them: Invasion of The Body Snatchers (Either version is fine with me) Brazil Face/Off A.I: Artificial Intelligence Donnie Darko Vanilla Sky (Though the Spanish version Abre Los Ojos is better imo) Some newer ones that you may have seen: The Martian, Arrival, Nope. Other than that, I think you've seen pretty much all of the truly great Sci-Fi films.

mgUltra

In my opinion, Jennifer Connelly's singing vocals used in the director's cut fits the tone of the movie so much better than the theatrical version. The removal of the opening narration may also make the director's cut the better version to react to, because of the opportunity to try to work out what is happening rather than being told. But honestly, they're both great, so I'd happily watch either.

bosho11

Second for Brazil

bosho11

City of Lost Children and Delicatessen are both great Sci-Fi movies, co-directed by the director of Amelie. You'll love them

Marcus Laubner

I personally didn't mind the opening narration on my first viewing. The character was so shady that I didn't trust him enough to consider him telling me the truth. But technically the narration is a big spoiler ;)

Marcus Laubner

I wouldn't consider City of Lost Children to be a Sci-Fi film, More a surrealistic steampunky fantasy feaver dream. But I love it and it just came out in 4K and looks stunning. Evenif it's not your cup of tea, there is so much about the filmmaking to appreciate. If it ever turns up on a poll, I give this a vote for sure!

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

How about a chance to see Leslie Nielsen in his first movie role, in the 1956 film (Forbidden Planet).

Lucas Coker

Well the Theatrical version of Dark City spoils the whole movie in the beginning. It'll probably lose but it definitely influenced other films. Watch the Director's cut instead.

MikeLL

Can't go wrong with Planet of the Apes, an essential sci-fi. I also voted for Ready, Player, One, not so much a sci-fi movie, but a very fun one. Dark City is very grim, but very memorable. I don't have any recs here, Planet of the Apes has to be watched.

MikeLL

How could I forget Vanilla Sky? I should have rec'd that one.

chris brown

Forbidden Planet (1956) should be on the list

Ron Moses

LOL Yeah I think the third act loses the film much of the respect its earned to that point. But I still dig the rest of it.

Ron Moses

Holy cow are you guys ever correct. The book was pretty bad (and I'm a huge Rush fan so I couldn't have been more targeted). But the movie was somehow worse.

Ron Moses

This is an absolute must. EEAAO has become my favorite film, and that's really saying something.

Ron Moses

I'm psyched to see it's climbed to second place! Behind only Planet of the Apes, which admittedly is hard to argue against.

William 1611

I voted for Sunshine, but sometime you guys really should watch "Silent Running" (1972), one of the most visually beautiful sci-fi films I've seen, with a very "different" plot, some real suspense, and even some gorgeous songs by Joan Baez. Directed by Douglas Trumbull, one of the special effects guys for Star Wars, Close Encounters, and Blade Runner. This one is really special!

mikethemotormouth

Sphere(1998) The Lawnmower Man(1992) Stargate(1994) Bicentennial Man(1999)

Paul Cox

Lol I always stop myself from suggesting Sphere because seeing a bunch of different reactors not like it would feel bad. I already had to live through everyone not liking it in 1998!

Paul Cox

It's absolutely my favorite film of the 21st century so far, and it's creeping into my all-time top three.

mikethemotormouth

I would like to get their opinion on any of these, good or bad. I go into any reactors content hoping for them to enjoy/appreciate the material but also prepared for them to not. For example, I remember Ash Burton not loving some treasures from my childhood/teenage years or OGB Reacts RAGING at Gaslight(1944).

OddThomas

Sunshine times infinity! There are so many reactions to Apes and Ready Player One; Sunshine deserves more love imo. Looper is also great!

OddThomas

Stargate is awesome!

Tyler Foster

Agree with everyone who says Director's Cut of Dark City > theatrical cut. You should be able to get the DC online, and the streaming versions are better than the Blu-ray, where they scrubbed the grain out. Also seconding Brazil (which, you should also find the director's cut).

James Willingham III

John Carpenter's "Starman" with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen is another great one.

Erwin Quiachon

"Splash" (1984) is more powerful than ever when I realize that Ron Howard was an unproven director with a low budget and a then unknown cast that included Tom Hanks, John Candy, Darryl Hannah, and Eugene Levy. That low budget didn't matter because the talent alone made that film a classic.

Future Boy

Universal Soldier (1992), also Van Damme!

Future Boy

Under The Skin (2013). Incredibly strange, and great for reactors. My favourite Scarlett Johansson film. It feels like Stanley Kubrick came back from the dead and made one final film. Also, "Triangle" (2009). A massive mind-bender that you'll be trying to work out for weeks. It's pretty unknown so won't win a poll. But I really hope you get to it some day.

PIG

I saw the original cut in theaters when it was released and the opening blew me away with the Trevor Jones music, so I prefer that actually. It reveals a lot of secrets but it was so mysterious and strange that it doesn’t spoil anything.

James Willingham III

Excellent film. So good. Although that may be more fantasy than sci-fi. I've been going through Ron's master class and it's awesome. So interesting to hear his approach to the craft.

PIG

Agreed. I wasn't troubled by the third act as other people were. My wife hated it in the theater back in the day. I found that Quentin thought it was the perfect Sci-Fi up to that point too. I can see what they are saying though.

Michael Chavira

I only voted for Her. I doubt it will win. There's plenty of people that haven't seen it, and also it is a film that only leans in the direction of sci-fi. It does take place in the near-future, but it's not that drastic a change from today's world. It's really more a love story, and the regret of losing relationships. With that said, I would like to recommend a new poll category dedicated to romantic/love stories. This will finally allow films like Her to make it to the channel, as well as so many other great choices like... - Amelie - (500) Days of Summer - Lost In Translation - Brooklyn - You've Got Mail - Stranger Than Fiction - Spanglish - Crazy Stupid Love

Lana Gorgeous

The original War of the World 1953 or the original Day the Earth Stood Still 1951, both excellent classic sci fi movies 😎

Lucas Coker

I prefer the directors cut. The theatrical version has that opening narration which in my opinion spoils the whole movie. Besides moving the narration it just has some scenes extended.

Terry V

Fantastic Voyage from 1966. Groundbreaking visuals and Raquel Welch! ( That name probably won’t mean any to the two of you. Lol)

Joel P

Looper: Incredibly overrated movie directed by an incredibly overrated director.

Dan

Man, GATTACA definitely needs more exposure. Hugely underrated.

Mitchell Smilie

Beware the beast man that votes for anything other than Planet of the Apes , for he is the Devil's pawn.

Alex

I voted for Sunshine as well as Planet of the Apes. But seriously. I haven't heard of a lot of these movies but this list seems like "One of these is not like the rest." Ready Player One is in nooooo way like NOOO WAY deserving of being on a poll for like the best Sci-Fi movie or something.. which I know that's not what this is but. It's basically one of those turn your brain off fun action movies. Not in any way really memorable or noteworthy other than unfortunately thanks to Facebook (Meta) it seems to be the way things are heading IRL, which is ironic I suppose. It's not a BAD movie per se. It's just very average. You should watch it once. But if you're looking for a choice that is above average or even legendary RPO doesn't even belong on the list.

miles

these are all legit good movies

JayWantsACat

Gattaca and Dark City dont get enough love for how great they are.

JayWantsACat

I laughed when the toxic Star Wars 'fans' whined that Rian Johnson is a terrible director despite Brick and Looper existing. And, of course, Knives Out.

Dave Olden

New Patron here so I’ll be brief: “3rd”

Dave Olden

William, I highly endorse Silent Running (1972)! However I need to address your credits for Douglas Trumbull. He did not do visual effects for Star Wars! (Lucas asked him, but he flat out turned him down, instead recommending John Dykstra (who had worked for Trumbull on Silent Running). And you left out 2001: a space odyssey (1968)! That is a MAJOR credit on Trumbull’s resume! (And a movie Daniel & Samantha have reacted to!)

William 1611

I stand corrected! Thank you, my friend! My point, for the Schmitts, was that Silent Running was really a serious, "major motion picture," and not a "B" movie. Thanks again!

Smooticus

Agreed. It's also too bad not enough people even heard of Logan's Run nowadays to appreciate it

Drzergberg

You must watch the Directors cut of Dark City, not the original. The original ruins the movie by putting in a monologue basically explaining the plot.
